Not many people could ever dream of giving Celine effing Dion run for her money, but alas Tommy Körberg exist. I can't even imagine - being Celine and being SURPRISED by a singer. Must have been one hell of an experience for her. To be challenged like that, must have been a shock for sure, but also...such a joy.
@JohannaSvedbergh7 ай бұрын
I've seen this clip surely a thousand times, and I still can't get over Celines face as Tommy belts out *chuckles* I also love his smug/cheeky look at her and that he then hands her a rose, making them both smile. Celine has a World-Class voice, I adore her, but in this preformance I feel like Tommy outshines her by miiiiles

The real reason to Celines suprised look is that Tommt didn't do the belting during the rehearsals, he just marked it. Tommy said that himself in an interview later. Celine probably assumed that Tommy wasn't going to belt in the concert either.

It is well worth listening to. :)

Apparently he went to a voice coach once because he figured he probably should. They just said "And what could I possibly teach you". Such a natural voice talent. Btw he competed in Eurovision the same year as Celine won the competition. He was sick that day and his voice failed him otherwise he probably would have had a good chance at winning. If you can find the live performance from the Swedish competition (Melodifestivalen) of "Stad i ljus" it's great. Otherwise "Anthem" from the musical Chess is great. Olivier Awards performance

Oh yes, but he has! Tommy Körberg has been active all along since 2017 and is still touring in Sweden. I saw Tommy live in concert in 2018 (solo), then in 2019 (with BAO and Helen) and then again solo in february 2020 (just before the pandemic stopped everything), and I can tell you that he is still very, very good! Yes, his voice is a little darker due to age, but his singing is still just as flawless as ever. Check out (ABBA-)Benny Anderssons Orchestra (BAO). Tommy AND Helen Sjöholm are the lead vocalists and together they are fantastic. And with BAO.... WOW! Benny Andersson sure knows to pick the best vocalists and the best musicians!

And to think, Tommy has no vocal schooling. None. And unfortunately for a while there he got quite over his head, grew arrogant, and then fell quite gravely ill. He is a much humbler man today. Fun fact, "Anthem" is haunting him. People who worked on that production will actually confirm this story. Dion didnt really know who Korberg was. He showed up late, unshaven and shabbily dressed for their rehearsal. Korberg often comes through as arrogant and aloof. He is simply not impressed by anyone. During rehearsals he mostly mumbled and held back to save his voice for the performance. Safe to say mega-star Dion was not impressed at all and mostly wanted to get it over with and fly home. So, yes, this explains her genuine reaction at 2:24. She simply did not know this buffoon could sing like that.

I feel so bad for english speaking reactors gping for this trifecta. Helen, Peter and Tommy all have the "Ö" in their last name making your mife hell tryi g tp pronounce it 🤣 I dont think there is a really good way to explain how it sounds but the closest Ive come wheb trying is that i sounds like the "i" in "bird". Also bothe Helen and Tommy has another annoying Swedish thing ib thwir name, being the "sch" sound thats not spelled "sch". The "SJ" is pronounced "sch" and "K" is also pronounced "sch" but _only_ if its followed by an "ö"... Otherwise is a regular sounding "K". So, Körberg becomes "Schörberg" and Sjöholm becomes "Schöholm". Keep in mind that these "ö" sound roughly like the i in "bird". Its convoluted AF, no one is blaming you for getting it wrong, trust me 🤣 Our grammar is really tricky. But I hope this very confusing comment helps you somewhat.
