I had the honor of being a member on the orchestra during this concert, and this was my favorite to play of the set. STYX so amazing to work with and they treated us with respect and not “just kids”. Everyone in the orchestra and chorus were 18 and under. Liza Grossman, the conductor, is such an amazing and passionate person. Every cyo alum loves her.

I've often wondered about the people in the orchestra and choir and how this impacted them. It seems like it was a great opportunity and experience. The conductor seemed like such a great person and seeing all the young people doing this is incredible to watch but being a part of it must have been amazing.

Keyboard player Lawrence Gowan is a classically trained pianist with a killer voice- and Todd Schuerman is a kickass drummer. And lest us not forget James Young on the other guitar! He and Tommy Shaw are the only 2 “original”members of the band. Check out Snowblind. JY wrote and sang that one (and no it’s not about a weather snowstorm)

Try their “ Come Again” video if you want some beautiful voices,guitar slaying,bass lines,and killer drumming.They put out two great albums together.

The lead singer and lead guitarist is Tommy Shaw - he’s from Alabama originally and was one of the co-starters of Styx with Dennis DeYoung who was the first to leave Styx. Tommy still maintains a concert schedule performing as Styx - you should check out his acoustic sessions with the your orchestra. Fantastic stuff.
@jona.87423 күн бұрын
Incorrect on two points - the band was formed in 1972, and Tommy joined the band between their 5th and 6th albums in late 1975 - replacing John Curulewski who had left the band to spend more time with his family -and due to an argument with Dennis de Young, lead singer and main personae. Dennis did not leave the band until 1999.

This is more recent vintage Styx with Lawrence Gowan (of Criminal Mind fame) replacing Denis DeYoung on vocals and keyboard. Gowan was a brilliant addition as he fit seamlessly into the band. The rotating keyboard is one of Gowan's signature stage presence things.

Crystal Ball is my 3rd favorite Styx track. I began hearing it in my teenage years, when everything was so confusing & unsure. The song still holds a special place in my heart today. JY once said Styx received a letter from a fan who stated that they were contemplating suicide. This song stopped them from going through with it. Never underestimate the power of how music affects us. Tommy wrote this before joining Styx. The original version is all acoustic guitar with another verse which was taken out when Styx recorded it for Shaw's first album with them. It should be on KZbin, by his band 'Harvest' if you want to check it out. I've seen Styx 6 times in concert. They put on a great show...

I've seen Styx in concert too many times to count. Amazing in the studio, but live is where they shine. In my opinion, the best performance from this concert (which is available on dvd etc.) is Blue Collar Man. Please react to this one. :) The orchestra is the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and the name of the concert is "One With Everything." Many from this youth orchestra have gone on to have professional careers with prominent orchestras. Tommy Shaw (the singer in this video) has also done a performance with this orchestra as has Jon Anderson of Yes among others.
