They never caught on in the states , maybe something to do with their name and they had all of their equipment stolen when touring there but they had a very loyal fanbase in the UK even though they were hated on in the media and by the authorities, the best band the UK has ever produced and yes , I am one of those loyal fanbase.

Their hit song Golden Brown was number 2 on the UK charts and was close to being number 1 when bass player Jean-Jacques Burnel told the press that it was about heroin. So it didn't make it. Singer and guitar Hugh Cornwall wished Burnel wouldn't have said anything. On both Peaches and Golden Brown there are some amazing keyboards by Dave Greenfield RIP. Golden Brown are delightly decadent

Always reminds me of watching Keith Floyd on TV, his intro music was Waltzinblack (also by the Stranglers) and end credits was Peaches. What sort of TV program had such music? A cookery show! Seriously! Always immaculately attired Floyd in his suit and bow tie would commandeer kitchens all over the world (and where there was no kitchen he had his trusty camping stoves or he just made a fire) always with an irreverent take on local or National affair and politics and more often than not his own film crew all the while chugging down glass after glass of wine, causing utter chaos and having a great old time.
@danweaver56265 ай бұрын
If I remember right, Floyd was a matradee at a restaurant where, I'm assuming, Dave Greenwood was providing lounge music for the diners. They became mates and let Floyd use their music on his TV show later on.

Listening to the Stranglers on vinyl is like going to the Zoo to see wild animals. They were always at their best when playing live. Actually, they royally fucked this song up, as it was supposed to have been a reggae number, but still one of the fans favourite. The growling bit at the end was him getting off on the beach bunnies. Jet Black’s drumming was what made the song ‘groovy’ and Dave Greenfield’s keyboards just gives it class. I’m glad that the pair of you can appreciate good music when you hear it 🫶🫶

This was the first time The Stranglers had played in London for over a year. They had been refused a performing licence in the London area for over a year because of their perceived misogyny and sexism - as shown in the lyrics of this song. They managed some illicit bookings but spent most of the time touring the rest of the UK, At this comeback gig they deliberately exacerbated the image problem by bringing on strippers (male and female) and a man with a whip during Nice & Sleazy.

@patthehorse Жыл бұрын
The BBC banned the song as it had the word shit in the lyrics, made them record a new version for radio. BBC missed the "clitoris, liberation for women." So the new version still kept the lyric. BBC has standards to upkeep.
@module79l28 Жыл бұрын
@@patthehorse - If that radio-friendly version is the one Planet Rock Radio plays, then the BBC went even further because in the line "Looks like I'm gonna be stuck here the whole Summer, oh what a bummer!" the word "bummer" was replaced by "Summer"!
