Festool D36 36mm Dust hose for Festool CT extractors
The Festool D36 is the 36mm hose for Festool's series of CT extractors. It is an upgrade to the standard D27 - 27mm hose that comes with the unit.
In this video we have a quick look at the hose and then take it head to head with the D27 on the Festool TS55 and the Festool Kapex 120.
It's not a cheap upgrade, but is it worth the investment ?
Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos, I post on a regular schedule
- Tool & business tips every Tuesday at 7PM UK time

I have the D27 and D36 hoses for my CT26 and son's CT15. I'd say there is a bigger difference in dust collection between thinner and thicker hose when dustbag is getting fuller and clogged with finest dust. When the dust extractor / shopvac cannot perform it's best anymore, D36 helps by not restricting remaining airflow as much as D27.
@TheWoodgrafter
@TheWoodgrafter 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for this. To be honest I haven’t really noticed a difference between the two hoses when the bag is approaching full. The restriction tends to be the vacuum in the chamber - and the dust bag restricting airflow. But then again - I have never really thought about it, so you could be correct. Cheers Andy

@@TheWoodgrafter I do quite a lot of sanding so there is a lot of bag clogging fine dust, that might make a difference. Also, if I put my hand 5-7cm in front of hose intake, there is stronger airflow with D36 than with D27. Or maybe I am just assuring myself I did not spend the money for nothing :D

Trimming 1mm of the edge of a board with the TS55 generates a lot of dust which escapes from the side. The D36 hose reduces that by quite a bit compared to the D27.

I like the 36 hose but the problem is the adapter does not lock on to the 27 ports in the smaller tools. It will pull out if the hose is pulled on.
@Mark_Walsh
@Mark_Walsh 5 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but I think the 36 to 27 adapter is not designed for that use. It's not designed for quick on/off depending on the machine. It's a more permanent fitting designed to change the end of the wider hose to a smaller fitting.

+Mark Walsh Hi Mark, not sure to be honest - I thought it could adapt as Indiacussed in the video. But I could also be wrong. In the end I didn’t go down that route, one of our community pointed out that the end of the 36 hose fits inside the big end of the 27mm hose, so I effect connecting the two together. And he is correct. So a neat simple solution :-) Gets my vote. Cheers Andy

I have the smooth D36 hose, and it has a rubbery end with no twist connect notches. Is this the same hose you have in this video? I can't figure out how best to connect it to tools like the DF500 domino, with some sort of twist connect to secure the hose. Is there some combination of adapters? Or bite the bullet and get a 27mm hose for the smaller tools?

+JD Improvement Hi, strange response. Festool make a coupler that allows you to attach the 36mm hose to a 27mm tool. The official name is Festool Reducing Sleeve 36mm Hose to 27mm Extraction Port. The part number is Festool 768135. You can see it at this link. www.kelvinpowertools.com/festool-reducing-sleeve-36mm-hose-to-27mm-extraction-port-c-262-p-11501?gclid=CjwKCAjw0vTtBRBREiwA3URt7jXrUcOgzsza0_Gt-G_iHPNWpOTo04cKExqBLT4CeNGpqPjMW1PM5xoCbwoQAvD_BwE However, as somebody pointed out to me, the 36mm hose will connect to the wide end of 27mm hose (the bit that normally goes into the CT) so you don’t actually require the adapter. Hope this helps. Andy

Thanks so much for this review. Like you. I’ve been disappointed with the Kapex 120 dust collection and have been considering a hose upgrade. I only have the midi extractor which doesn’t help matters. I’ll give the 36 a go and have also bought a dust ‘funnel’ for my Felder dust extractor but that will be a pain to be switching on and off for small jobs but may be good if I’m doing a batch of sawing. Keep up the good work! Martin

Definitely not worth it. What is outside diameter of 27 mm hose for attachments? Will it fit standard German 35 mm accessories? Will festool accessories work with other brands (Karcher, Bosch)?
@TheWoodgrafter
@TheWoodgrafter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, The D27/32 hose is a tapered hose. It is 27 at the tool end and 32 at the vac end. The 27 and 32 are the ID of the hose. The D27 tool end connection will fit inside your 35mm ID tool ports. You can also get third party adapters if you want to make the most of the various quick connects other tools use. Cheers Andy

@@TheWoodgrafter I have not known that it is tapered. Cool. So if I buy some Festool attachments for D27 they should fit my Karcher NT30/1, right?
@TheWoodgrafter
@TheWoodgrafter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I squash it into all sorts of tools. If it has a 35mm port then yes it should fit. I haven’t tried it on the K tools - and don’t have one to check it. It may be worth asking on the Festool forum to see if anybody has tried it. But the math says it should work. Also, with the Festool stuff you have a 30 day return policy - so if you do take the plunge - check if you can return it if it doesn’t work. Cheers Andy

We use the RG130E with yellow disc to strip paint off weatherbords quickly and the difference is enormous. D27 collects little to the point it's unusable in suburban areas (a lot of old paint in my country is lead based and needs to be collected) whereas the D36 sucks all.

+d.COG. Hi d.COG, thanks for commenting - now I have used it more and more, and now on customer sites cutting MDF, skirting board, architrave etc the D36 has made a huge difference. The D27 still comes in though, great for lighter work such as site clean down etc. So having both is great. And as you say, if it is working well with the heavy lifting you are doing the that is proof enough. Talk soon Andy

@@TheWoodgrafter Another thing, the D36 tool end plugs straight into the D27 vac end without a connector to give you double the hose length. You're back to D27 suckability but good for the sander or site clean up. Good vid too and thanks for taking the time to do.

if you get around to it I'd like your thoughts on the festool cyclone in terms of suction loss with the 27 and 36. The intake to the cyclone reduces way down and I'm wondering how that impedes the overall suction and performance

@TheWoodgrafter
@TheWoodgrafter 5 жыл бұрын
+Ian Baker Hi Ian, yes great point. The length of the hose and how many turns you have in it all effect the air flow. That would make a difference, I do like the longer hose as it gives me flexibility across multiple workstations. The CT is my only source of dust extraction, so some compromises. Having said that, the dust extraction is good enough. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Talk soon. Andy

Yes, I have a shorter 36mm hose (1600mm) makes a noticeable difference over the longer type. Also there’s less to bend, so more direct suction.

Do you know if this can still be done? The owner of my local Woodcraft called Festool last week and was told that the new woven hoses (post 2018) are tapered and therefore you cannot cut them down and still have the tool-end hose connector fit. I can see this being the case on the new 32/27mm hose but I don't see anything suggesting the 36 mm hose is tapered. Do you know anything about this? The reason he called them is that we were not able to find the connectors (that would allow a user to make a second hose after cutting the original hose down) Any info you had on this would sure be appreciated

@katabrontes
@katabrontes 4 жыл бұрын
No surprise here Andy. The cross sectional area of the 36mm hose is nearly 180% bigger than the 27mm so for a given pressure difference and length the air flow will increase by the same amount.

The Woodgrafter Hi Andy, I bought the 36mm hoses for both my workshops after being advised to do this by Matt Banwell (N&B) to use with my TS55 as it was making a lot of dust. It certainly helped a lot and I have found it is well worth having for the Kapex as well and makes a much bigger difference than on your short test. After making a few cuts you will certainly not regret buying it. I have sleeved all my hoses now as I only need a few leads so most of the tools don't have their own now. Fiddly to do but it does make it much tidier and I don't snag the leads any more. Got the sleeves from eBay about £20 each I think. You donned to be careful to get the right amount of free lead at each end before you shrink the wrap at each end as it's very hard to move it afterwards. How are you getting on with your new Incra fence system and positioner?

Hi there, are the ct extractors good enough to suck up 0.5 micron particles? All I could find is that it is good for>1mg, which is weight not particle size
@TheWoodgrafter
@TheWoodgrafter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, As you say the micron tends to relate to particle size rather than weight. And it usually refers to the filters ability to filter out the particle size. You can get different filters with different abilities - Obviously the costs go up. The one I have (with the silver filter) works to 1 micron. The bag filter that came with it works to 2 micron. The Festool is an M class filtration and will manage an impressive 0.3 micron. Fit it with a HEPA filter and you are at 0.1 micron Hope that helps. Andy

@ChristopherClaudioSkierka 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodgrafter thanks, I shall contact festool regarding this. ( actually I thought HEPA was only for the USA market, that is good if it can be obtained for here and it fits the UK model). A bit weird really, it is M rated, they make a song and dance about their dust collection ability BUT the original bag is for 2 microns - :( , not good really.
