That cabin looks like it will be snug and warm when Winter arrives! Particularly, when the fireplace is up and running! It's almost enough to make you wish that Winter was closer... almost! What kind of furniture are you planning to add? I have always admired the ingenious way the French Canadians hung their shelves! I hope that the "Little House" is in the "Goldilocks" zone... not too close, for the heat of Summer, yet not too far, for the cold and ice of Winter! I am REALLY looking forward to seeing how you go about building the canoe... and seeing it on the water. The information on your English Trade Musket was greatly appreciated as well. Thank you for sharing your "Woodland Escape" with those of us who live through you vicariously!

@@TheWoodlandEscape Hi Peter! Sure! Take two boards of wood... say about 6" in length x 3" wide x 1" thick or so. Saw an angled cut in the middle of each board... so you end up with four pieces. Secure two of them to the wall, level, with the low side of the angle at the top, next to the wall. The shelf is "L" shaped, and the two remaining pieces are secured to the back of it, so the high side of the angle at the bottom of each one, will interlock with the ones on the wall. So simple... it is genius! AND an authentic French Canadian technique! The same method, using two sets... a upper and a lower, can be used to hang multiple shelves and even cabinets! Try it out and see if you like it! All The Best, Martin

@@WoodsmokeSelf-Reliance I have seen examples of it down in Vincennes, Indiana, Southern Illinois, and Eastern Missouri... all areas that had a early French-Canadian influence. So it makes sense that the technique came from "The Old Country"... in this case, France. They had a unique take on building a cabin, as well... as opposed to the more familiar Swedish style that became popular in the English Colonies. Thank you for sharing the NAME! It makes it so much easier to look up information about it!

I ended up going with a Traditions Deluxe "Kentucky" Long rifle. 1:66 twist rifled bore. Wonderfully beautiful rifle, cant wait to shoot it. I just discovered your channel and I'm really fascinated by it and your lifestyle. I have a question. I've noticed that living history and re-enacters tend to want to age their things. You even mentioned it in your video. I really noticed it with larpers as well. Why age something if you are supposed to re-enacting it? They wouldn't have used materials that were hundreds of years old. Most of their stuff would have been newly created by them or bought new. I've seen people tea stain journal pages as if 18th century minuteman would have used paper hundreds of years old to make a journal. I don't do living history or anything, i've just always wondered why people in the 18th century would have worn clothes that look like they've been worn for centuries.
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 2 жыл бұрын
What a wonder question Chrystal and based on being quite observant to boot. If we look at muskets as an example, if one examines an actually piece that is 2 to 3 hundred years old , it looks like it is that old. What we attempt to do by adding patina, is to make a shiny looking new built look like it is being carried and used every day. As to clothes, conditions were harsh and those on the frontier would be fortunate indeed to own more than 2 sets of clothes. They literally lived in them. However, should they acquire a good set of clothes, great effort would be taken to ensure they stayed nice.

One of the most remarkable ways that electric light has changed our world, that nobody considers, is the availability of eggs. Before the advent of the electrical light bulb, eggs were only available in spring and summer. The hens will only lay when the eggs have a chance of surviving, the light patterns, the length of day tells the hen when it is summer. So the light bulb has tricked them into laying year round.
