Bravo. Ian talked about bands he mentions in his Rebus books. I have written many songs with Wishbone Ash and know that Andy Powell of said band is blown away by the fact that they get a heads up from Ian. Probably the highlight of a tour when Ian turns up at the Edinburgh gig! 👍😎

Ian Rankin’s the only person I’ve ever heard mentioning the Scottish link to the Beatles and the Stones, ie Stuart Sutcliffe and Ian Stewart both coming from Edinburgh/ Fife. I found it amazing that when I visited the History of Scottish Rock exhibition showcased in Edinburgh a few years ago, no mention was made of this amazing fact - the two biggest bands in the world EVER, both had Scots as members. Well done Ian Rankin for letting others know. Ps, nothing to do with the story, but I saw the Stones when they were second on the bill to Freddie and the Dreamers.

The venue Ian was talking about in Edinburgh had a few names Clouds, Coasters, The Cavendish Ballroom and in the late 80s it was called Network

The biggest Scottish acts that predated the success of SAHB were probably Lulu, Marmalade, Al Stewart and that chap who always pops up on New Year's Eve. Stone The Crows had Alex's brother Les in the band with Maggie Bell. Let's not forget the legendary Humblebums (Billy Connolly & Gerry Rafferty - the latter formed Stealers Wheel too) also Gallagher & Lyle (McGuinness Flint), Jim Dewar who was Robin Trower's lead singer and the great Miller Anderson, who played with the Keef Hartley Band and is Scottish!
