playoffs hockey gonna be lot tighter on defence than that. Some games will be just 1 or 2 goals scored by each team. They'll need production everywhere not just top lines to improve their chances, we'll see.

Your comment about penalties was spot on. The refs seem to put the whistle away when the playoffs start. I've never understood why this happens, but it does. So yes, a talented, speedy high scoring team, that gets lots of powerplays suddenly is getting hooked, tripped and interfered with and getting no calls. I think this will happen to Edmonton, unfortunately.

I doubt that's true. We are all biased for our own team and will see things go against us that are unjust but on replay are the right call. What would be the motivation for refs having favourites?

@@steelcom5976 There are also reviews that show how bad a call can be. I will never forget the time NY Rangers scored on the Capitals with 7 or 8 guys on the ice. Or ask any Leaf fan ever about how many calls don't go their way (despite ignoring how many times they do get favourable calls). The refs do put their whistles away. They do let players play it out. It's such crap, because mediocre teams can play dirty, get the opponent riled up and win a series. There's also the fact that 2 refs in the past couple of years were caught on mic stating they were looking to even up the number of penalties. I blame the NHL.

This isn’t true. If you look at the penalties per game, it’s only like 1.5 less in the playoffs. So, while they may have slightly less power play chances, the PP will still be a significant factor.

And 2 refs making a bad decision to "even up" the penalites ONCE over years is actually a pretty good sign. If you have never made a bad decision on the job then feel free to criticize others. Kaner is gonna play a key role for them this post-season. Seeing he was top 5 in scoring in all of last years playoffs, I think his experience, grittiness, and scoring threat alone is just insane. There are not many with his ability in the league, the only that come to mind are Marchand, the Tkachuk brothers, and Kadri, but I think Kane is better overall than Kadri.

Why do people keep saying there are less penalties in the playoffs. Last years playoffs had 4.7 penalties per game where as it was only 3.7 during the season.

When it comes to the history of the Oilers during playoffs it’s not just the teams the have to contend with it’s the referees as well. You said that Oilers rule the ice in one man advantage (I’m paraphrasing) that’s where the refs will be call less on the the opposing team and more on the oilers. I hope it doesn’t happen and I hope that they don’t poop the bed.

Just look at the plus/minus to the teams and you'll see. It takes more than scoring goals to win the cup. Goaltending and defence are extremely important.

They weren’t terrible defensively before the deadline but since Ekholm came over he’s proven he can be the #1 guy which is what they were missing. That took a lot of pressure off Nurse and everyone has benefitted since
