Too few people know that although the law says you are presumed to be the father of a child if you marry a woman or get engaged to a woman that you reasonably should or could have suspected or known to be pregnant, not many people know that jurisprudence says this is no longer valid with current technology and testing, and instead of 4 months at the latest, it now is 6 weeks at the latest, plus engaged has come to have very loose meaning (used to be register engagement, wait 3 months, be allowed to marry) because 0 waiting period for a marriage and reluctance to register such events anymore, and as such any concrete discussion of marriage or engagement or actual steps toward it (renting venue, buying rings, etc) can and will be seen as engaged and as such married for purposes of paternity law. Guess how I know? No really, you get 1 try only. I kicked her ass out at 12 weeks well before she started to show and took the ring back, judge says I admitted there was a ring so I am on the hook that is it, I can get out child support, but she has to agree to a test (she will not), she has to name other potential fathers for testing( she will not), she has to pay half of all those tests (she cannot) and what she cannot pay up comes on my plate. But suppose she does and court agrees to it, baby must have a particular lifestyle as the "father" (me) would have provided. Meaning I make much more than the other guy, I still gotta pay my share. Second reason is, paternal rights and responsibilities are no longer 1 and the same they are completely separate things. You can rarely if ever get out of responsibilities part, but if they allow a dna test I will be instantly stripped of my paternal rights (not that I want to see her hellspawn but okay) because dna no match, judge named this explicitly as motivation. But they can be demanded by the actual father. And he has no duty, legally speaking, to assume payments. He can if he wants to (like hell) and the mother agrees (as if she would say no to double money), but again, if he makes a lot less then me, I still have to pay my share.
