My 5 year old son has been a bit ill last few days, and I just asked him if he wanted to watch Emma, I told him something ate ALL THE BRASSICAS and his face lit up 😂 he loves the drama. Thanks for a great episode. I'm sorry he loves the downs as much as the ups of gardening 😅❤

Take the wooden sides off your beds and keep stripping the decaying bottom leaves off your other plants - basically give them nowhere to hide. It honestly works. Good luck!

Try putting clear plastic bottles over outdoor seedlings. Just cut the bottoms off. Protects them until they establish a bit more. Loving your videos

Cow Parsley is a plant that tells you when to sow your carrots You sow them either before it flowers or after it flowers. You then avoid first generation carrot fly and carrot fly is the thing that buggers your carrots.

I've designated 2024 as the year of the slug. Or to be more precise the year I went slug free . I've laid down planks everywhere and every day I go around collecting our little friends hiding underneath. To date I've collected 2,478 slugs give or take a mollusc. The plan is to make homemade nematodes as shown on Simplify Gardening channel. 2025 will be the year of the pigeon .

Pesky slugs and snails! I don't have a solution for you but leggy plants can be planted really deep, it will extend the root, give more support to the leggy bit and allow for more solid growth once established... this works well for flowers too. x

Love to see your "snail climbing frames" [i.e. the Purple Sprouting Broccoli] ... I'd collect all of the snails & slugs you can find and, if you can't face giving them a "coups de grâce", carry them with you when you leave the site & leave them on the Horse Parsley along the entry path. You could also try the "partially covered sunken pot with beer in it" to act a slug trap.

Add some flat slats of wood on the ground outside the raised beds. The snails and slugs will go underneath and hide out. Then simply flip the boards over and scrape them into a bucket of soapy water to dispose of.

You can pour stale beer into flat saucers/pans and sit them on the ground. Snails and slugs are attracted and climb in and drown.

Dear Emma, Hello, from The Netherlands. I last heard that snails find their way back up to 1km, so you would have to move them for more than 1 km away of the allotment . I heard you can eradicate them by using nematodes. Good luck with the allotment. I love watching your chaotic vlogs.

Nematodes! (and prayer😂) Expensive though. Collect all the slugs and snails - put them on the bird table or in the compost bin. Grow plants on in a greenhouse or coldframe until they are big enough to survive. Expensive also. Slugs like little seedlings and warmth and damp. When the sun comes so will birds. (Antidepressants work as well😂) Please dont worry.

It’s hard not to get discouraged. I almost decided to quit and give up. We have slugs, snails, cucumber Beatles, cabbage moths, Japanese beetles, vine borers etc etc. I decided I would not quit and try another year. I hope it all gets better for you and we can bow to our organic farmers.

hi Em, I Would say at least 60/70% of my crops especially brassicas get munched by slugs and snails and its soul destroying! Dont forget that a huge amount of slugs live underground and eat the tiny seedlings virtually as they emerge (the younger, the tastier it seems!) from the earth. This year is the worst ever due to the damp mild conditions and I am defo losing the battle against them! Your plot is looking fab x

Emma, slugs and snails have homing instincts, apparently you need to take them at least 20 meters away from your plot, otherwise they will just return. I use pet bedding, wood shavings around my strawberries, had some over so spread it around my spinach which was getting destroyed by slugs, seems to have worked as new leaves are slug free … also it’s cheaper than strulch

The strong winds have kept me off my plot since the weekend. I don’t know if this will work but slugs and snails love citrus so I’m making a citrus waste area in the hope they will go there instead. I don’t worry too much about wildlife eating my food, it makes me feel good that I’m helping nature! I also leave a few of each crop unprotected in the hope it will be eaten by something and the ones protected will be ok. I’m using slugless around my hosta at home and so far it’s not been eaten it’s the only thing they go for in the garden x

HI Emma, I notice you have tulips in the same bed as veggies, snails congregate on the underside of large flat leaves like those of tulips because they can make a good seal and avoid losing water from their bodies. However, it is easy to find and collect them from the undersides and dispose of them. I think you need to get them completely off your plot rather than toss them to one side, can you collect them and put them in the woods away from your plot. I find snails also hide inside a tulip flower. I pick tons of snails off our tulip leaves and I keep tulips and other large leafed plants separate from my veggies. You have done wonders with your plots and worked so hard, don't let slugs and snails waste all your efforts and money.

These darn slugs and snails! Im two months into having my plot here in Devon and most of my radishes have been raviged, along with some of the onions and bulbs. Ive put down copper tape on one bed to see what happens, but im looking into other organic/non pesticide ways. Whilst doing my research, i think that strulch and wool pellets arent as effective in wet weather as they arent as uncomfortable for snulgs & snails to trail over 😧 So it seems weve got an unlucky set up with all the weather reeather in the uk this year!

Apparently snails have a homing instinct but this could be overcome by moving them more than 20 metres away. Maybe Tom could help you with a massive snail collecting mission and take the little critters for a drive to be deposited elsewhere. Is that a thing I wonder? Fly tipping snails? I wonder if those big birds who attacked your brassica cage were trying to get to the snails rather than the brassicas? Even foxes like to eat snails.
