@AndrewFishman3 жыл бұрын
@@adamfox1669 Do not throw in the towel. I have painted my mediocre miniatures for 30 years. When I look at the minis I started with an then what I can do today, I am reminded that mediocre today is a lot better than my first attempts. :) Just focus on the basics, say " This model I am gonna colour between the lines" " This model I am gonna do some basic blends" Before long, you will have mastered the basics and be moving onto the more advanced techniques. "This model I am gonna paint the eyes." "This model I am gonna wet blend on the cloak". The only way you will not improve is to quit doing it.
@jeffreygeorge88843 жыл бұрын
Great advice, as always. I'd add a couple of points: First, a painted model is always better than an unpainted one, even if the paint job is less than great. Bad paint looks better on the table than gray plastic. And second, always paint forward. If you've been in the hobby for more than 15 minutes, unless you have superhuman impulse control, you have dozens, perhaps hundreds, of unpainted models. If finish a model and are a little disappointed with the results, you can strip it and start over, or you can put it aside and paint another. The best-case outcome if you start over--painting backwards--is you finish with one nicely-painted model. The best-case outcome if you move on--painting forward--is you have TWO painted models, one which is really nice, and one which is probably not as bad as you thought at first. Going back to point one, two painted models is always better than one painted model.

It's best not to get hung up on failure. The human experience is defined by failure. That's normal. If you think you've failed, that's good. It means you dreamed the impossible dream, and tried to make it a reality. Maybe you can turn your failure into a success down the line with some more work. Maybe you can learn what not to do, so your nest efforts will be better. Maybe in time you'll realize that your failure wasn't that bad at all.

One other thing along similar lines -- I take the "finished" models away from the painting desk and over to my hangout area, and just look at them in a different light for a while. Very often I will notice some pretty obvious stuff that needs to be touched up. What seemed like good contrast under the painting lamp may look like a dull blob under normal lighting. One thing I had to realize is that it is OK to do touch ups even if you have matt varnished the mini, in fact stuff like metal really needs to be re-brightened if it got matted out.

Funny thing is, the last couple of weeks I've really got into Space Weirdos and I painted a gang of mercenaries from models I had lying around. I had a random Kroot guy and, instead of looking up reference photos and planning my scheme, I just went for colours that I liked and totally ignored the canon/fluff. Purple skin, green hair, yellow cloth. It came out GREAT, perfect for this little game. There's no moral to this, just sometimes working on something different brings out your creativity and really makes the hobby feel fresh. Oh and also, Space Weirdos is awesome.
@davydatwood3158 Жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider is that painting models, like any other creative effort, benefits from collaboarative synergy. So take those "enh" models to the tourney, and play, and whilst you're there chat with your mates and say "hey, I'm not quite happy with these, what do you think?" And once you convince them that you really want advice and not just affirmation, they'll have their own ideas about how *they* would tweak the models - and that might give you a notion that really works for you.
@CurrentKick3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what it is, but sometimes I'll go from finishing up some painted minis I'm really proud of, to the next one looking completely underwhelming. I think part of the problem - taking close-up pictures or videos for Instagram or KZbin. When else are you going be to looking (or judged, lol) at a mini THAT closely? Especially for a tabletop standard type paint job, I'm going for -- which from that distance, they (usually) look fine!
@MrSJPowell3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, letting a mini sit is one of the best things you can do when you're not happy with it. Sometimes we get too caught up in the art we're doing, and we need to step away and come back to it a week or three later and see what needs to be fixed.
@fredclasson78653 жыл бұрын
A message that needs to be out more. I started the hobby some years back but everytime I talk to people who gave up on starting it they all tell the same story - they weren't satisfied with what they did. Not happy with moldlines, or that the metalic paint was too thick, could never decide on a paint scheme, wanted to switch Space Marine Chapter halfway through etc. You're gonna field like 30 basic Chaos Space Marines on the table, unless you're a professional painter no one is going to stop mid game to pick one up and inspect it. It's sad but true.
@herlocksholmes93693 жыл бұрын
1:50 If you want to give them a different look without much effort, you could take one model and try painting the shoulder pads and the belts/straps a different colour. And if it turns out worse, it's relatively easy to go back to the way is was before. An approach similar to the one I just mentioned is often worth trying out before making bigger changes to a project.
@LPP_YT3 жыл бұрын
Always (at least imho) a good idea to look at something with fresh eyes. Even if it's something you're happy with, taking a break and coming back to review in the mooring often lets you see things you may otherwise have missed. But as you say, sometime good enough is good enough.

I feel like this is one of the advantages the big wargames have over the smaller skirmish games. When you have lots and lots of models to paint, it allows you to use the smaller chaff units as a test bed for your colours and as they say, practice makes perfect. So when you come round to finally doing your big centrepiece models, or just the units you care about more, you already have that experience under your belt so you have a much higher chance of those models turning out well.

Wisconsin shirt? Also, totally get this sentiment. I've been speed-painting old D&D minis in the last week just to empty the box and my latest Drukhari detachment is less refined. I wouldn't say rushed, but I'm not as focused on the sharp lines and details as I see a lot of people strive for. Perhaps it's artistic preference, perhaps the preference is based in an impatience or inability to paint every single individual plate on a suit of armor a different color, but I like what I've got, and that's what's important.

I always regret something whenever I've painted a model. I've only painted give or take forty models in total (of which 20 are Necron Warriors), and some have turned out better then others. I've learnt how painting white is a pain in the rear, and so is yellow and orange. Still, I've kept the paint jobs, even though I could dunk them in acetone and start over. I see them as something I can learn from and improve, and then I can come back later and watch them and compare to my current skill, and really see that I've improved. I've also learnt that you don't see all the huge details unless you're really close, so I've learnt to not try to do Golden Daemon award paint jobs on a battle line model that I need to paint 40+ of.

This is totally true, sometimes when I finish a miniature (especially if I have spent a lot of time into it) I'm kinda put down by the hardly visible mistakes. The solution is: go to bed, and check the end result the next morning, you would have forgotten about the mistakes by then hahahaha.

Damn you might not like em but I really dig them. Plus, you could maybe make a bunch of really thin, really bright glazes and start putting color in places. @buzzedaldrin73163 жыл бұрын
As long as you can learn from your mistakes then you have gained some knowledge that you will carry with you for every subsequent model that you paint, which in the long run is worth the frustration and sense of loss that you feel at the time. And just remember, although we chase results and hope to appreciate the end product, the process itself should be relaxing and enjoyable. If you find yourself beating yourself up and stressing over the results too much it's time to reconsider your expectations a little and remember that this is a creative recreational activity and not a competition (for most of us/most of the time, anyway...).

Let those models be your reference point. Then, no matter how much I mess up in the future, I can look back on the old models and realize that my current "mistakes" still look better than my "really good" from a couple years ago. Yeah, 99.9% of my models aren't "bangers". I think my peak was at the turn of the century, and I wasn't anywhere near being a Golden Daemon winner then. These days I'm lucky if I finish 5 models in 3 months! I find that comparing my models to other's on social media is a fools errand - I can't paint like Vince Ventruella for example (even if I do watch his tutorials). So I've given up trying to emulate other people's skills and just post photos of some of my completed models on Instagram when I feel like it, and mostly for my record. Painting doesn't always have to be a competition.
@frocat51633 жыл бұрын
That's a healthy attitude. I'd even argue that painting should never be a competition...unless you're actually entering a legit competition. My family routinely ooos and aaahhhs about the things I've painted, because they don't spend time looking at actual amazing paint jobs. I know every little mistake I've made, and I know that I'll never be a Golden Demon winner, but it's not important that I (or anyone) become "better" than anyone else.

Also there core pose is therefore hard to change compared to the trench coats they used to have 😪 love there new book and its creepy lore, but I'm struggling to find a better figure choice/pleasing conversion (although there newest boxset is nice it doesn't fix there base figures issues).

I am so the opposite of this. Usually I am pretty reserved, but on the hobby table I am so impulsive- measure once, cut twice.

Another good video Uncle A, I go with is it good enough? especially when weighed up against all the time and effort to repaint. Painting is not my favourite part of the hobby and will often look to shorten how long it takes. Just about to embark on painting a SoB army Bright Pink as a contrast to all the Green, Black, Red, silver, Yellow and Blue my other army colour schemes are. In my head it will look Awesome, reality I think will be different ;) but as long as its good enough :) - Btw your weird boys looked great :)

Little late to the video, but my perfectionist self needed to hear this. Thanks!

I gave up over-caring how amazing my minis were several years ago. I have thousands of minis and have less than half painted. Good is good enough. If I get the time I'll repaint stuff for tournaments if I can be bothered. Life really is too short

Sometimes I feel like you’re a miniatures life coach or therapist lol

I like their looks, but I get what you mean. I think that if you made the coats a greyish blue like the typical DKoK coat, the coats would pook just as good to me. But it's all up to you.

I like playing. As I age I’m not so much into the building and painting. But alas I do as well as I can. Don’t panic game on!

My goal for my hobby is just doing stuff that is fun. They just have to be table top ready that is good enough for me
