yeah after that first run when matt went back to the top i thought the same thing. sometimes you just have to take some creative liberties and say maybe the wood in the mines is a special kind that they can't gather on the surface

There's a line in the game that explains that one of the gnomes doesn't let the others chop down the woods because he likes to walk through them or something like that.

Appreciate the insight; it lacks any cohesion now, why are trees and chickens underground? Isn't mining for gems just fine? but then we are given a huntress, so who knows what this has been molded to conform to.

I cringed whenever Matt put his boomerangers in terrible spots. Their boomerangs bounce to any adjacent chickens, so if you want them to target a specific tile, make sure it's the only one with chickens on it nearby and it will bounce to any out of reach. The little demo thingy showed this.

If you mean Steamworld Build, this is a bit different but the basic concept is similar. There are a few other games where you get resources from underground to build up the overworld map.
