I worked at a Pharmaceutical Company, and I was given the responsibility of shipping Packaging Machines, and Components, to other locations! I would order 2x4’s, and plywood sheets, to use them to build my crates! It seems like a great way to eliminate issues, and ensure that no damage will occur! I never had any problems!

I've seen where they wrap the parts. Then, fill the box/ crate with expanding foam. That looks like it's the best way

With a complete bike shipment I suggest you remove the windshield and bubble wrap and make sure it is securely inserted in the shipping box and will not be able to move during transit. A couple of years ago I shipped my complete 2008 FLSCT from HD Doha in Qatar to Cape Town South Africa. I made sure that HD Doha used the original shipping box that they received from HD USA to install the bike with all the tie downs, fixtures and fittings plus the HD outer HD cardboard covering. I inspected it before shipment and signed it off. The HD Doha installation was free as I included that in the original purchasing contract when I bought the bike. It arrived in Cape Town in perfect condition-it was shipped in a 20ft container with all my house goods and all was covered in an insurance contract. Hopefully you meant a Smart charger as the old school trickle charger would continue to charge the battery indefinitely.

The company I work for shipped a custom-built $40,000 machine back for warranty. The manager told the shipper he would take care of the packaging, and it arrived in "Box Of The Week" condition. He still has a job, so I'm guessing insurance may have covered the loss. It arrived from the manufacturer on a custom-built pallet and left in a cardboard box. RIP tube bending machine.

Yeah I recently received a new bass guitar that I've opted to have shipped in a Gator bass hardshell case that was shipped in its cardboard box and shipped in an oversized cardboard box with two to three inches of expanding foam. The package arrived with huge gouges in the outer box and the box corners crushed. The bass guitar was fine but one of the Gator case dividers that rests against the upper horn was broken. Apparently the box was dropped so hard on its end that the horn broke the divider. My friend had his new custom made guitar arrive with the shipping box totally destroyed but the guitar was wrapped in many layers of bubble wrap and amazingly survived intact and undamaged. In my case Sweetwater replaced my case for free.

Too true Kevin! I purchased a complete gearbox- from the U.S of A- for my Suzuki Gt750. The two shafts and gears arrived sans ANY form of internal wrapping; and in a PLASTIC overnight satchel. Bashing and clashing against equally hardened components the entire way. And slicing holes in the plastic bag.

I own a window covering company. We receive 1000's of packages a year from manufactures. I just looked it up, we had over $100,000 in damaged product come in last year. Luckily the manufacturer takes care of it. I will say UPS and FedEx are the best. It's the freight companies that mostly are to blame. I mean I received a $10,000 Lutron roller shade that has forklift holes right through the entire box and shade. That shade is made of carbon fiber and aluminum and they put forklift forks clear through it! Why?

Overthinking isn't necessary. The military use foam-in-place packaging for much more expensive much more delicate engine parts. Any local shipping outfit can crate, foam then ship. You can buy foam kits online but I see no reason to add extra steps. BTW angle steel is not expensive so welding a rugged engine box frame with integral engine stand is an option for those who fab. If you ship engines that provides a box much tougher than wood and you can add casters to use it for engine storage. (I make sure everything heavy in my shop is easy to roll since I'll have that equipment for life.)

The way the Air Force ships parts worth more than any HD is worth copying and is not difficult. "Foam in place" packing materials are available online or your local shipper can do that for you inside your box, crate or container of choice. You can make your own killer steel-reinforced crate or use a surplus Hardigg-style container (if you're spending engine money a couple hundred for a container is nothing, and you keep the container). The aviation industry uses some wooden crates but it's not hard to weld an angle steel frame incorporating a steel engine stand and using a mix of welded and bolted access panels or to copy military steel parts "caskets" (even better if found used). I can easily do all the above but driving to the gent (Jesse Stewart) who built my "bitsa" stroker Panhead was more fun and about the same cost as crating and shipping an engine/frame/gearbox. If you're in driving range of your engine builder it's a wise use of your time to show up in person and converse a bit.

Yep, bubble wrap is no match for vintage Harley heads and the gorillas at the shipping companies. I purchased a set of pristine looking oem early ('66-'69) model shovelheads and the seller wrapped them in bubble wrap and put them in a typical carboard box. When i got them, both had bent and cracked fins and the exhaust spigot on one head was no longer round on the inside and would not accept an exhaust pipe. Needless to say I wasn't pleased. A box in a box, when stuffed correctly seems to work good but putting the heads in seperate plastic bags and using expanding foam to form a buffer in the box would be ideal-----in a perfect world.

Thank You I'm Kevin, the Lord's Blessings for you Brother. As a former truck driver I ask folks to not blame the drivers. As a "green furniture maker" I received a "Chain of Custody" letter/statement with every certified lumber delivery. VERY EXPENSIVE SHIPPING and HANDLING! The person that picks up your bike or part(s) doesn't deliver it unless you hire a small item contract carrier. A distribution warehouse has minimum wage employees redirecting small boxes to regions so they may put your small box on a pallet (nicely?) and on a truck to the other warehouse. A route driver drives his load halfway and swaps trailers with the route driver from the receiving warehouse and they then drive the next leg. Once again those dock workers (carefully?) unload your box/crate and (gently?) forklift or hand truck your package across the warehouse/shipping dock to another trailer, where it is loaded (professionally?) for it's next or final leg. Along with hundreds of other packages because we are not alone on this planet! That driver hooks up their LTL- less Than A Truckload trailer and drives to the swap point or a closer warehouse for your destination. You can look in truck stops and large lots all across our country everyday and see one driver sitting and waiting for another. They meet, chat and swap trailers ( sometimes tandems or triples) and drive to their home warehouse. The terrific dock workers again handle your package to a final trailer for a local LTL/ROUTE drivers to deliver your package in their course of travels as the load is supposed to be organized for the trips schedule and efficiency. Understanding who and how your precious cargo moves should dictate how you ship it and answer what you are willing to spend! Nothing moves across the world without a truck, but their are hundreds or thousands of people that see and handle your package daily to it's intended destination unless you pay extra for a small carrier with a pickup or modified tractor/trailer to personally guarantee it's delivery. One crazy example; Walmart warehouses handle dry, fragile and cold storage items 24/7/365. Trucks bring in full loads and they are broken down to route trailers that get all those thousands of items to your local stores as quick as possible but sometimes that is days or weeks after being produced or processed in the case of your meats, veggies and fruits?? Spend the extra time and money to ensure Kevin and other professionals get your project or your baby quickly, safely and timely. Mr. Baxter Sir, with Love and Respect You are in my prayers Hoka Hey

great video, thanks and i know this is nit-picking but all my years in Dealerships we would tell customers to use Battery Tenders, A trickle charger in many cases will not shut itself off and can slowly cook your battery, least that's what my techs would tell me and customers.

Having worked in a common carrier freight company there is no way I would put my engine on one of their trucks. Would put it in the bed of my pickup and hand deliver it to your shop. Have seen way too much damage on trailers.

Doesn’t matter they all suck. You packages are going to get the absolute shit kicked out of them in any warehouse. You wouldn’t believe what goes on in those places. They will run the forks right through a crate because it’s easier and quicker then putting the forks down and picking it up properly. They love to squeeze 55 gallon drums with the forks rather then getting off the forklift to do it properly. Almost every drum of oil I’ve gotten was crushed and several were leaking. The number of crates that had fork holes I’ve received outnumbers the ones that didn’t.
