It may not be the season, but if you want to hear Matt, listen to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." Matt sings lead all the way through while Scott covers the bass.

Mitch suffered some long term repercussions from the bullying he received in high school, to the point where he's had trouble believing that anyone would actually want to hear him sing; that injury can only have been made worse by the way the producers on _The Sing-Off_ treated him. The people whose musical judgment he trusts the most are the other members of Pentatonix (as they darn well should be), but to him their judgment was suspect because he knows how much they love him, so maybe they were telling him what they thought he needed to hear rather than the truth about his voice. But from an interview I heard from him recently I believe he's finally begun to come to terms with those old injuries. He's starting to believe in himself more. That may be reflected in how often he takes the lead now. It may also have something to do with his willingness to dress in a way that honors his feminine side as well as his masculine side - he's finally starting to feel at home in his own body, openly being the person he truly is. I certainly hope so; that old pain has hung on for much, MUCH too long.

Matt and Avi both have degrees from music schools but Avi chose to develop the deepest part of his voice (useful for a career in opera) while Matt seems to have gone for the higher baritone (better for musicals and pop music). Matt also has a decent falsetto. And you should see him live to really appreciate him. Here's a 7-minute video introducing Matt when he joined the group. It has interviews with him and his college singing group, and comments from the other Pentatonix members -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3Kwn4ujjbOGiZI

With Kevin’s beliefs, the band keeps their music PG. I think this decision has increased their fan base to include all ages. Recommend their cover of Mad World.

first & foremost, thank you for being so open about yr past injury & how it's clearly affected you. there is, imo, such strength in sharing what has hurt us, even when it doesn't necessarily always lead to closure. & secondly! i am so happy you're appreciating their mash-ups & noticing that their arrangements aim to highlight each person's strengths within the whole :) big hugs from chicago -

They don't do live performances on Kevin's day of worship (Friday or Saturday, not sure which) out of respect for Kevin as no work allowed on that day in Kevin's religion.

I believe it’s Saturdays… which is a big day for concerts so that says a lot! He’s 7th day Adventist I’m pretty sure.
@UserHorologium Жыл бұрын
It's actually Friday night. Seventh day adventists consider Saturday to be the Sabbath, but they follow the "sundown before the Sabbath is when it starts" rule (like Judaism) so as long as the concert starts after sundown on Saturday, they're good. From what I understand, this was something that was non-negotiable on Kevin's part, and I admire his devotion to his faith.

Pentatonix has always acted like a family. More, like a loving, fully functional family. Look at their -cover- upgrade of "Mary Did You Know" some time. It's hard to think of a more Christian song, but watch Avi's face as he sings in that song. This is a Jewish man singing an openly Christian song, and apparently meaning it. Why? The only answer I have is that he was singing with his family, and they were Christians and wanted to do this, so he was willing to participate. Kevin is a Seventh-day Adventist. For Adventists, the Sabbath starts at sundown Friday night and runs until sundown Saturday night, and it's wrong to work on the Sabbath. This is important to Kevin, important enough that he was willing to help Pentatonix find another beatboxer to replace him, to resign from Pentatonix so they could give concerts on Friday nights. So Pentatonix doesn't give concerts on Friday nights, because Kevin is more important to them than the extra income. And I don't believe they think of it as a sacrifice; I think that for them it's just taking care of one of their own, because that's what families do. I heard an interview once where the interviewer asked them why they had five members, why not ten? And Scott answered "Because ten would be too many." I think he was talking about two things: 1. Pentatonix doesn't need ten-part harmonies. 2. More importantly, Pentatonix is a true ensemble band. Each member has moments when they can shine, frequently. It isn't just that they squelch their egos for the greater good, it's that it's better for Pentatonix as a whole if the needs of every member of Pentatonix are met, and this is one way to do that. That's fairly straightforward when there are five members in the band. Can you imagine the tangle it would be with ten? I bet Pentatonix can, and I bet the very idea makes them shudder. Also, remember _The Sing-Off,_ where Scott HAD to be the lead singer in every performance? It was a nightmare for him. I think Scott is delighted to have bandmates who are willing and able to take the lead from him.
