Mark: You're amazing! Everything you said about the vulnerability of Africans who live overseas and are trying to build something back in their countries is true. But my shock came when I realized that some of these Africans are using you to check up on their projects! That is brilliant. It's a win-win situation. Why? Precisely because you can be trusted. When it comes to money, trust is a very valuable commodity in Africa due to the desperation in the place. There are a lot of stories of Africans in America and elsewhere who got scammed by even their immediate family members. I'm talking about people like their own parents! For you to be able to seize this as a business opportunity is great. Unfortunately, it's also a very sad commentary on Africa. My only advice is that if you continue to play this role, think about your security. Be as discreet as possible about your personal details when talking to workers, just in case they get irate when the money taps are suddenly shut and they blame you for it. By the way, I love the tone you were using while checking up on this project. It was inquisitive and not critical or accusative. That's exactly how to go.

I accept the foreigner price. I think it is essential. Otherwise the increased presence of foreigners could price the locals out of their own communities from the resulting inflation. When 1000 of their shillings is 42 cents how much does that really hurt us at the end of the day? As for the Representing America comment, I am not doing that at all. I just wasn't born speaking the local language which put me on par with many other continental Africans here in my neighborhood. I can't speak for Mark but I will consider myself an American with no further needed distinctions when we get full and fair reparations (when hell freezes over). I do the same when I meet locals back home in Tanzania, when making small business, buying some important stuff and needing certain services. By speaking English to begin with and it might go on for minutes, hours or even days depending on the task am working on. In time I reveal that I understand and speak Swahili, although it is not fluently like a local. But good enough to wrap things up without getting ripped off by scammers and charlatans.

Hey Mark! Love your initiative, I have also been initiating in observing and been “project Managing” for people in the diaspora here in Zambia. Unfortunately it does get really expensive, as much as you’re trusted make sure you have a fee that you’re charging people to do so, as people end up expecting more than you can deliver (from personal experience) I have been doing my own project and showing people our journey, some reach out with good intent and others, for the sake of using and you do not want to have a situation where someone is not pleased with how much you can do, as we all know you are busy aswell at your place, and with your projects. Hey Mark, I am African Amer lady married to Nigerian. In Nigeria, at the Market, people were calling Me Oyinbo, which means white or light skinned foreigner in Yoruba. Over there in Tanzania they are calling you Mzungu, white foreigner. I would recommend you do not react. People who feel the need to name call are looking for a reaction to prove themselves right despite their own actions. They will not usually look at what they did to get that reaction and the people around them who likely think the same will agree with them over you because they are likely thinking the same thing. You would only be making enemies. People will go through extrodenary lengths to defend their wrongdoings and many are not right in the head or heart so they will not see the mistake in their actions. Even if you tell and show some Africans back home the realities of the West.. they'll still be doubtful. They may even think you're trying to dissuade them from the west. To them the west is a total haven. (To be fair, their condition in Africa may be quite hard and so anything is equates to be better).

I now understand why the rich go for professional services! Those with fat wallets contract borehole digging services from big companies like Davis and Shirtliff (I believe they service the whole of East Africa). Then for construction they employ the services of medium and/or large contractors who give near-exact quotations and supervise from conception to actualization. Alas! Not all of us have that kind of money. So we have to rely on local labour and bear the brunt of substandard services coupled with insults (especially if you are a woman investor). It's what Mark calls people of low vibration...very difficult to deal with.

They didn't insult the owner like you said. Nothing bad was said about the owner. They said the project should be so big that the owner (jamaa) asked you to go check it out. He then added "halafu mnalalamika hamna hela kumanina zenu". Which means "and you all complain that there is no money"kumanina zenu" He swore his colleagues not to the owner. The word “mzungu” is often used positively to refer to a white person. If a black person is well educated and keeps track of things like time, they also say that you are like mzungu.

That "M" word, being called a "White Man", is insulting. It's the equivalent of a caucasian american calling us the "N" word, and saying, "Oh no no no! That's a term of endearment.
