There's also Euro countries that have climates like ours and they're forging ahead. Everything will work out just fine. The only reason there's issues isn't because they're electric, it's because there are going to be winners and losers in a new disruptive market. The market will force innovation (which is happening) and the market will destroy the losers, meaning the shit chargers that didn't work in this video are not going last or become dominant in the market. EV's are going to be the best vehicles in every possible way. There's only so far you can go with blowing shit up in a can. That's had a good run but that run is done. With manipulating electrons.. well, we don't even comprehend what those limits are. If you had to buy an EV today, Tesla with a home charger is your only option really for where you're at. 10 years from now you'll drive half way across Canada before you need to charge again and you'll have a lot of vehicles to choose from. Point is anyone can get one if they really want. That aside…. Since currently Evs are luxury cars for anyone that decides they want to put effort into being able to own one. If you get an EV you educate yourself on how they work. You don’t get stuck because you didn’t charge or didn’t precondition or check for chargers using the built in computer. Lack of Accountability, responsibility, an willful ignorance is how you get stuck in an EV. The issue at hand isn’t getting stuck because a charger isn’t working and there is nowhere to charge. We are talking about people stuck because weather and they don’t understand the technology. In your own comment if evs are luxury toys then who is really complaining about EV issues now? Maybe people that don’t have them, can’t afford them, and or are ignorant to the actual capabilities and function. It’s new technology, there isn’t going to be a bunch of EVs busted all over the place unless the price comes down and ignorant people start buying them. Just like the onset of Gas, people would break down because they ran out of gas like crazy. Not near a station etc. Now since people are educated if someone runs out of gas they were pushing it or are widely considered ignorant. Evs are the same, except people aren’t getting the benefit of being completely blindsided by the technology because information is readily available. Unless a charger is BROKEN you will not have issues charging if you understand your car. Of course there are some outliers like a broken port or computer, but that isn’t the norm. Of all of the videos I’ve seen of people having issues with charging it has been extreme tests, broken chargers, not pre conditioning or rare defects or pure BS. Like the guy with the 2013 model s saying his car is dead and Tesla won’t fix it. But he hid the fact that it was 9 years old. Don’t take it personal but I have a EV, I can’t replicate most of these issues because I’m not ignorant enough to let them happen. When it’s cold I set my destination to a charger and the car heats up, I get there and my car charges fine. Before I go I verify that the chargers are open and working using the screen and sometimes the EV apps, if I don’t plan to go anywhere I charge and take into account daily power loss, I do this by nature because I love technology and I’m responsible. I don’t understand how your battery gets to 2% and you get to a charger that doesn’t work and you get the benefit of the doubt that a situation like that isn’t absolutely your own ignorant fault.

Every couple hours someone in the car needs a short break and we charge up for 10 mins and get 100 miles of range back, enough to go another couple hours. The chargers always work, they're always fast, it's literally just grab the charger and plug it in, and, at least around here, I've never had to wait. Costs a fraction of gas, even on the go. I've never spent more than 10 mins to charge my Model 3, on the rare occasion I need to charge away from home at all. That gets me about 100 miles, which is good for another couple hours of driving, which is as far as I can get before someone in the car needs a break anyway. I don't think there is any EV that needs 2 hours to charge. First, that would be charging from 0-100%, which is not a real-world use-case. You charge a bit then drive a bit. Charging gets you miles fast for the first 50% and it gets progressively slower from there. 90-100% takes as long as 0-50%, which is why no one ever does that. The main problem with non-Teslas is that you can't count on the charger working at all, much less giving you the charge rate it's supposed to. Fortunately, Tesla's network has no such issues.

I love the EVs (instant acceleration, less parts) but recognize they are still a maturing technology but a better simpler one as compared to ICE vehicles. In time EVs will evolve and improve while ICE vehicles will fall away to the wayside but that time is ony starting today. I understand your position and respect it. Purchase what works for you but realize that as we move forward in time the EVs will overtake the ICE vehicles and the value of EVs will level off (hopefully at a more reasonable price) while the ICE vehicles will be challenging to maintain since part manufacturing will be reduced. Probably years from now, possible decades, if someone has an ICE vehicle it will be like a classic car and parts will need to be searched for far and wide while parts for EVs will be ubiquitious. Also, fuel will change as well with heated, covered EV quick chargers being commonpace while ICE fuel stations will become rare. This evolving of technology is similar to how electric power evolve as an alternative form of energy for light and power. Today, most people take it for granted to flick a light swith on the wall and the room lights up but that was not the case in the past. In the past one often had to light candles or oil lamps to obtain light.

So sad, in the United States, buying a non-Tesla with the intent to do some travel still means being a 2nd class citizen in terms of charging. It's been this way since I went full EV in 2015. Its too bad, I've nearly bought a few non-Teslas that I like better than what Tesla offers, but the BS you have to deal with charging on the road just isn't worth it if you travel a decent amount imo.

I feel the same way. Plus no one takes into consideration how this will work in large cities. I live in San Francisco, parking in front of your house is not a guarantee and most people use their garage for storage. Waiting in line for charging will be a nightmare and so will going to the malls. Our power gird is not up to par, and they are already talking about charging during peak hours. Judging by the video and eliminating the weather eliminate people will be out there at 1 am to charge a car. Great idea about EV but too costly they don't last as long and if you run out of gas, you can go get gas, but you need a tow truck if you run out of juice.

We might get there some day, but this video is just more evidence of one of the many issues that need to be solved. If a gas station goes offline from weather you can generally find another within miles. As this video shows not even that would save you with electric, as none of the chargers could handle the cold weather.

Otherwise you're sitting at a charge station for eons waiting for your car to charge, or worse, getting to a charge station and realizing they aren't working.

I’ll also say, if the delta units are shown to be much better, EV-Go might clean EA’s clock with their Flying-J/Pilot/GM Ultium build out. That network is projected to have coverage that rivals EA but it’s in better locations and perhaps with better hardware. They also work better with Teslas thanks to Autocharge and perhaps with future NACS cables (EV-Go clearly is interested in that).

A suggestion for the charging station manufactures is to install small heaters to heat the charging station to above freezing whenever the outside temperature is below freezing. Another suggestion for the installers is to place a roof over the chargers and parking spots (the roof could have solar panels to offset electric costs) to keep vehicle owners from having to be in the weather outside the vehicle as they charge similar to gas stqtion pump coverings. Now, if they really wanted to improve the charging experience (although a more expensive approach) is that anywhere there is severe extreme temperatures to enclose the charger and parking area in a closed building similar to a garage where the temps in the area are kept at a minimum, maybe just above freezing. But that would probably cost more.
@callistoscali4344 Жыл бұрын
Remember, Tesla can do it without any of that. So, there is something about Tesla's design that makes it effective without having to bear the extra cost for all of that. No LCD screen, small footprint, enclosed plug storage, short cables, etc are just some of the design modifications that avoid all those problems.

There was an Electrek article yesterday that said Tesla will start showing 3rd party charging stations in the car's navigation. Luckily they don't rely solely on the uptime reported by the charger owners like EA. I think something like being used at least once in the last week + 90% success charging should be a included for 'uptime' metric on all chargers. The metrics to be included in Tesla cars are: *Have at least one compatible charging connector. *Be frequently used by Tesla drivers at least once every four days. *Have an average charge success rate of 90% or higher. The stations will be removed from the navigation system automatically if one of the two criteria is met within 14 days: *No charge sessions detected. *Average charge success rate falls below 70%.

At some point unless the tech changes, they're going to run out of materials to make evs anyway. Some materials are severely limited in availability and non-recyclable. That whole no fossil fuels by 2030 (or was it 2035?) is a joke. That's not even considering that the production of evs require fossil fuels, and that the electricity itself is partially produced using them. They're cool as a hobby or for enthusiasts and have some limited applications, but yeah, a viable replacement, they are not.

My wife and I have already rejected the Idea of an electric vehicle. Our daughter works at SoCal Gas, natural gas. Their biggest customer is the electrical generation plants. So don't anyone tell me electricity is emission free. Let's go back 20 years and build a hydroelectric dam and generator. There are all the construction equipment burning fuel, all the construction employees burning fuel to get to work, cranes or helicopters putting up transmission lines Etc. We live in the country on a farm and feel the electric vehicle/equipment just won't work on a farm. They are finding that wind generation is now creating a certain pollution strain on the environment as some of the blades are only lasting 10 years and then more crane work and they have to take them somewhere to dispose of them.

They should reject what's going on in this video. It's unacceptable. Teslas, on the other hand, have none of these issues and are a joy to own.
@catbert7 Жыл бұрын
@@Gotz_the_iron_hand I mean, I guess that's a true statement. Technically Earth will eventually run out of all materials, unless humanity is first disposed of. What you fail to mention is that the materials used to make EV batteries - the only major difference in material needs from a gas car - are extremely abundant. Cobalt is in short supply, but Tesla has essentially eliminated that from their batteries. Mining of lithium and friends will need to increase, but extraction is the only limitation right now, not availability of the materials in the Earth. There will be battery materials for eons past the point oil would have run dry. And over 90% of Tesla battery packs are recycled. Many recycling businesses are currently developing around this market. Their high recyclability will mean that, after an initial investment of materials, very little more will need to be mined, unlike fossil fuels. As for emissions, EVs are more efficient even when the electricity powering them comes from fossil fuels, because the motors don't waste almost all the fuel on waste heat, as ICVs do. And electricity is increasingly becoming cleaner as well. My state, WA, is almost entirely hydro. EVs are not a hobby and are not limited application. They are a straight-up superior product. They out-perform ICVs on maintenance, fuel cost, safety, tech, performance, etc. The only sore spots are upfront cost, range, and charging network. The first two are temporary issues, resulting from the infancy of the tech and industry, that will quickly be dealt with. The last is a corporate structure issue of bad incentives. Tesla has overcome this and has an excellent charging network. Others have not.

Lots of lessons learned. In extreme cold: some chargers do not connect, others the charging rate initially drops by approximately half, when the vehicle batttery monitoring sytem senses the battery is warming up, the charge rate incrementally increases. Biggest issue is working charging availability and capability. In extreme cold weather route planning: Ensure battery system conditioned prior to leaving on full charge. Estimate for shorter distance charging intervals with more frequent stops. Have multiple backup charging options whenever fast charging or other charging units are not working or available. Budget longer for charging interval times. Or charging up to a certain level with a safety factor, rather than full charge to decrease downtime. Looking for convenient rest stops close to charging units. Safety when charging in the wee hours or in isolated locations.

My favorite part of EV’s is that it helps with CO2 pollution one car at a time while plugging in to clean energy that is generated by the power company which burns coal & gas to create the clean energy going into the car. It give me the “it’s not my fault I’m doing my part” feeling while sitting at the charging station for 2 hours & watching hundreds of cars fill up & leave every 5 minutes
@lisaazzano1811 Жыл бұрын
Love your explanation 👌. So so true. People need to look up the entire EV process. It doesn't save anything on coal and gas production. It's actually far worse. Severely expensive to own is another issue. They need to look up how lithium batteries are produced

Everything has a price, it is just how much polution is generated to produce the solution. Even though thare those who point out that solar and wind are greener they are far less polution generating. it does produce some polution to produce and transport these items but they produce far less polution over the long haul.
