They Drained This Canal For The First Time In Decades, And What They Discovered Is Truly Bizarre

The Canal Saint-Martin in Paris is one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful waterways. But the centuries-old, 4.5-kilometer canal is also one of the dirtiest, and has to be periodically cleaned out.
City authorities recently drained and cleaned the canal for the first time since 2001, removing over 40 tons of debris in the process. But it wasn’t all beer cans clogging things up. Thousands of artifacts were pulled from the muck, and they range from fascinating to downright bizarre.

Wonder what they were realy looking for ? A nation uder fire like France doesnt just start spending $ cleaning up centuries old waterways for nothing. A tactical diversion from the occupation maybe? Sure we are destroying your culture but look... We are cleaning up for the new occupants. MAGA

weird..title says "first time in decades". The items found seem to support this. But your commentary states since 2001. If that's accurate then they didn't do a very good job cleaning it up in 2001.

You are right on! That is what I thought too, people should just be honest it is no big deal to be honest, God actually loves honesty and cleanliness but honesty is best. They didn't want to tell the ugly truth about how long it's been since the last cleanup. I'd say not in my almost 50 yrs. I remember seeing a documentary but damned if I can remember what they said about how long it was if ever since they cleaned it.

The cleaning was done this time only on the narrow part. And they didn't find big things, mostly bicycle and scooters. When they cleaned the large part ("bassin de la Villette") two decades ago they found dozens of washing machines, motorclycles, cars... and corpses. The really old items (WW1/2) are coming with the water, they aren't thrown in.

What a load of rubbish. Don’t believe a word of it. How did the 2001 cleaners miss a WWII car???

This should show the city of Paris that they need to be more responsible. Why are people just throwing trash and things they don’t want into their canal? That’s just disgusting and, ruining the city. I love the out of sight, out of mind mentality. It’s friggen ridiculous.

It's a shame that this is actually a necessary process. Trash cans are great.

"Workers descended into the canal bed to begin the cleaning process." Really... now it just sounds like you are using filler sentences to make the video longer

If the previous time it was cleaned was in 2001, they had missed a lot of stuff.

If they cleaned it in 2001 they must have done a horrible job if they're finding crap from WWII in there this time.

Here's an idea. Once cleaned. Lay fish nets on the bottom. So you don't have to drain the canal. And, yes, you can pay me for this idea.

People use the bridge over a river near me almost like a wishing well as you drop the coins so it hits an angled part that sticks out, so I'd love to get down there if they've never cleaned out those coins over the years.
