What a shame the choices came down to total lock-out or a free for all. The lack of thought by the neighbourhood is disappointing, but typically USA. Pity he could not offer a local amenity to friends and neighbours without "financial liability" rearing its ugly head - again, very American

Call it what you want ..These same people would have sued him if anyone was injured or worse. Sometimes being kind can bite you in the behind.😮 If you already weren't friends then there's an additional risk and think owners of pools need to know what those might be and what Insurance is needed.

If you think having a pool can result in obnoxious, entitled neighbors, try having fruit trees! So many people think that because the fruit is growing on trees and not sitting in a grocery store produce section that it's free to anyone who wants it. You haven't lived until you come home and see people trespassing and picking cherries, plums and apples off your trees. I even had dewberry vines (similar to blackberries) and had one a-hole strip them bare and when caught eating the last handful said, "those blackberries were really good!" I threw him off the property and warned him to never trespass and steal from me again or it would involve the police.

Ouch. I never pick neighbors' fruits unless explicitly given permission. Across the street from where I live is a Meyer lemon tree. When I first moved in, the folks living there *invited* me to pick as many as I wanted because they couldn't use them all. They moved out and sold the place. The new neighbors don't speak to anybody. I've waved "hi to them a few times with no response (they moved in during the pandemic). I no longer pick the lemons, but I've seen folks picking them who were clearly not invited to do so.

I would never open my pool to the neighborhood, nor would I use a neighbor's permission unless I was invited on to their property. People seem to have a huge of entitlement these days and I can't imagine where that comes from...but one accident at that pool could have cost the family their home and all their possessions, because you know that anyone brazen enough to abuse a neighbor's property is the type of person who would turn around and sue if they had a mishap there. As of me...I really doubt if this is a true story.

In New Zealand, private swimming pools have to be fenced (to stop children from drowning themselves) Owner of this pool should've told people if they wanted a swim, to find either a river, a lake, a beach or a public swimming pool instead of knocking on his door, he didn't have the pool built for THEIR enjoyment, but his.

I put up a pool, all the children in the neighborhood helped. We had several fun filled summers with children all my children's ages swimming. And when a gopher had undermined an area. All the children came and lifted the edge of the pool while others pushed the dirt back in for support. I loved having the children. When the pool was worn out and done the children all grown. Our home was never the same. Best time in our lives.

Legally, a swimming pool is an "attractive nuisance," meaning if a kid trespassed and drowned at 3 in the morning while the homeowners were asleep, they would still be liable. In Virginia, all home swimming pools have to be surrounded by an 8-foot-tall fence. Any entry door in the fence has to lock.

Here's an idea for someone wanting to build a pool in their yard. Before you start the work, pass out a notice to all your neighbors that if they want to use the pool, they must help with the work in the construction and help maintaining it after being built. Those who help will be free to use the pool. Those who don't, won't! The homeowner will save money by having free labor to help dig and construct the pool and maintenance!

seems like they did overreact. Simply saying no would have been far more preferable. I bet it was the kids inviting other kids over that was the issue. Could set certain days aside for visiting and other days would be sorry, family only days. The method they used was not neighbor friendly. Kind of like when your spouse keeps nagging at you and then you blow up and break her dishes and stuff. Then you realize you were the one who looked like the fool.

The part I don't get is he had to 'budget' for the chlorine and supplies, but in the end, he renovated a brand new pool and added about $100K in new features? That's the part that doesn't happen. Neighbors coming in without permission and taking unfair advantage does absolutely happen. We had a nice play ground in our back yard, and the neighbor children were welcome when we were home to supervise and our kids were out playing. One neighbor had a 10 year old that was way large for his age. No matter how many times I asked his mother to keep him at home when we weren't at home, and to not let him play on the toddler toys, she seemed to encourage it, even after we put up No Trespassing signs. He ruined our fence climbing back and forth over it, he broke the swing set, the sliding board, the teeter totter, and repeatedly threw all the sand out of the sand box. We had a small plastic wading pool which he broke by running and jumping into it. There was one of those plastic playhouses out there, he climbed on top of it and literally crushed it, he crushed the child's picnic table, he jumped up and down on our wooden picnic table and broke the benches off of it. With nothing else left to destroy, he came over one day, turned over our gas grill, and broke that, too. It was bent completely out of shape, and all the gas works in it were gone, never did find them. On his last trip over the fence, he fell and cut his leg badly enough to require several stitches, and she thought it was 'very un-neighborly' that I refused to pay for it, even though her husband's insurance covered the bill. We had to go to court to try to get our damages paid, finally had to put a garnishment on her husband's wages.
