Then I switched my cravings to iron rich real foods. Like spinach and stuff( god I love spinach ,bitter melon too.) It's been more than 10 years since I have stopped eating these stuffs. I still have cravings but somehow I got t under control.

The reason you mention, is not the reason why people get addicted. They get addicted because it gives them the feeling of calmness as some of them described too, but it also spikes dopamine levels a bit which makes the brain want to try it again, and over time, no other activity will do the same and feel as good as eating those rocks. Maybe its because of the salt and maybe its because of some other ingredients or a mix of both, but it is not healthy and it is addictive.

In india if someone sold clay as food they can be arrested or have to pay fine but yeah there are many sellers who are selling slate stone not in good category but for writing purpose and people used to eat it because of pica disorder.
