Luke is writing his gospel for those of us who are seeking Jesus, but like Mary and Joseph, we are struggling to understand. We pray that if, like Mary, we treasure the gospel story in our hearts, our eyes will be opened and we will recognise Jesus. The theme of searching and finding occurs frequently in Luke’s gospel, but finding Jesus often involves a surprise. Jesus doesn’t do or say what Mary and Joseph were expecting. Discipleship often involves the unexpected.
