to give Salazar Slytherin the benefit of the doubt. He lived during a time when users of magic were hunted and burned at the stake. Hogwarts was founded to be a safe haven for its students, and letting muggle-born children with magic potential attend could be seen as a massive risk. If one of these muggle-born students betrayed the location of the school or names of other students their lives could be at risk.

6:59: Hogwarts is just the school. The castle is situated somewhere in an isolated area of Scotland and serves the magical community of the British Isles. 16:30: In the book, McGonagall asked Harry and Ron why they didn't send an owl with a letter to explain them missing the train. Neither could answer because they were too ashamed they panicked too much to think of this. 32:54: Harry doesn't particularly trust adults in general, due to where he grew up. Its just not his instinct to immediately tell them what's happening. Also, he's paranoid AF about people thinking he's hearing voices that aren't there. The teachers were just trolling at 54:50. Which brings up the question of why Dumbledore would hire such an idiot in the first place. The simplest part of the answer is that there weren't that many candidates to choose from. By my estimate, there are only about 7000 wizards in the UK - including the children. So there's not a lot a very big talent pool available. They have to take what they can get, even if they aren't as competent as one would hope. And most likely, nobody else wanted the job (partially because of reasons that will be made clear later).
@balanc-joy91872 жыл бұрын
Veggie, Lucius' plan was better stated in the book, but I'll give you the rundown since his machinations pretty much end here for the most part: Lucius had been given that diary by Voldemort before his downfall, while being told only that it was an artifact enchanted to cause the Chamber of Secrets to be opened. What you saw in the beginning, at that shop (Borgin and Burke's), was Lucius pawning off some dark magical items that he didn't want the Ministry to find if they raided his house (again). Now, during that moment in the bookstore where Lucius grabs one of Ginny's books (It actually in the original book erupts into an outright _fight_ between Arthur Weasley and Lucius, which Hagrid has to break up), he _secretly slipped the diary into it_ His attempted idea here was to, in one single move, rid himself of a dark object he couldn't easily sell off, open the Chamber to get rid of the "Mudblood scum" in it, discredit Dumbledore and try to have him removed (which Dumbledore reveals he partly did by threatening the governors into agreeing to, as they sent him letters about it when they reappointed him the second Ginny was taken), _and_ ruin Arther Weasley, who he hates because Arthur supports Muggles so much, and his family, despite being pureblood (by accident rather than on purpose like the Malfoys and other families do), don't actually care about all the elitism garbage. Ginny started writing in the diary, Tom Riddle used his position as a friend of hers to learn about the events going on, started taking over her body and mind, and at first finish purging the school, but then later kill Harry Potter specifically. Dobby somehow found out about the part Lucius knew about (presumably by listening, as servants hear _everything_ since they are beneath notice, and House Elves in particular can't easily/ever disobey or reveal their Masters' secrets) and had been, as he said, trying to keep Harry away from Hogwarts so he wouldn't get caught up in it.

31:00 Both of Harry's parents, Lily and James, were in Gryffindor. It does _tend_ to run in families, but that isn't an actual part of the process in Sorting. The Sorting Hat chooses students based on how they are as people, like those who are bold and courageous go in Gryffindor, those who are studious, loyal, and humble are in Hufflepuff, Slytherin is where those who have cunning, ambition, a certain disregard for rules go, and Ravenclaw is where the intellectual and those with a keen desire to discover and question are most suited. It isn't always obvious how a person fits into their house, and there's good and bad sides to all those things (We've seen the kinds of bad in Slytherin, yet Merlin, a wizard who desired above all else a world with harmony between Muggles and Magic-folk, was in Slytherin when he was in school. I personally blame Voldemort's toxic influence on how bad Slytherin is now, but that's my speculation only. As for Gryffindor, you'll meet one example come the next movie, and there are a couple of cut characters from the books who are just downright gross, and some bad qualities in the older heroes that aren't revealed properly in the films also show the bad side of Gryffindor). Back to it being in families, I think that's more by accident. If you are born from people who also have a tendency to be a certain way, and you are raised by them, then it stands to reason you'd share some of those qualities yourself wouldn't it?

26:36 It's cut I think from the film, but Filtch is actually what's called a "Squib" basically the opposite of a Muggle-born Witch or Wizard, as Ron puts it. It's when a regular Witch and Wizard, produce a child who has _no magic_ at all. Filtch isn't very happy about the fact he works at a school where everyone else can do it, but he can't, but it's one of the few jobs he can take as a Squib, presumably on the generosity of Dumbledore or the previous headmaster. If you mean the Bludgers, like the one that went after Harry, they're designed to basically make the game more challenging, by trying to knock players off brooms, while the Beaters fend them off with their bats, and _also_ try to aim them at the other team. The woman you're trying to remember is Madam Hooch, and actually, she has little time in the series after the first, some brief referee moments in the books, but with the films her actress wouldn't come back on, or the director's wouldn't pay her enough, or something, so we never see her again. Since the story is from Harry’s perspective/around things with him, we don’t get to meet other people in other houses until he does, and since gryffindor and Slytherin have a longstanding “rivalry”/competitiveness against each other they tend to see/notice each other more than Harry would other houses. Not all Slytherins are bad or think the way Malfoy does but it is much easier for them to choose to be bad and be very good at it if they wanted. You aren’t automatically in the same house as your parents, but it is common since parents try to instill their morals and ideals on their kids, but since there were so many Weasley siblings (with lovely parents) I think the Sorting Hat is just a bit tired of them. Muggles typically don’t see magic just the effects it leaves behind, like how they don’t see them going through the platform wall but they saw the car because it was made by muggles and enchanted and they didn’t turn on the invisibility thing. And Hagrid didn’t dislike muggles, more of a general distrust and also hating the Dursleys for how they treat Harry.

This was a fantastic reaction...It's so nice to see someone watch them for the first time and be genuinely excited over it all!!! They do indeed keep getting darker, although the themes get more mature, and the circumstances get much more complicated...And it's all wrapped up in the fact that the characters are growing up physically and mentally (as were the kids who were the main fan base of people who were reading this series). Seriously though, some of the best over-arcing "morals" and life lessons.

in the books each year the sorting hat says a different poem about the qualities of each of the houses before the first years are sorted.. so if your personality and qualities kinda line up with those, then you are sorted into that house. however as we know from Harry your desire to be in a house or not to be in one is taken into consideration by the sorting hat.

29:26 In duels, speed is everything, so Snape's "Exxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxspelliarmus" is particularly hilarious! I love the way he offhandedly suggests teaching the students how to block spells first (his contempt for Lockhart's incompetence.. 😆), and then his "random" choice in Draco for Harry's opponent... All followed by that smooth spin on his heel like a freaking dancer, and the quick stiff gesture at Draco to step up. He's so damn intimidating but graceful AF. Don't know whether I'm supposed to like Snape or dislike him at times, but I sure as hell love every aspect of Rickman's performance. Awesome!

Living in a world where a spell or potion can fix most things gives one a different concept of danger. After the movies you would probably adore the books. So much more info and subplots they couldn't fit in the movies..especially from 4 on. Lucius Malfoy was getting rid of dark magic stuff that could get him in trouble with the Ministry because they were raiding people's houses. You heard Mr. Weasley mention it when he came home early on the movie. Also be aware that there are 7 Weasley children in total. Ron's oldest 2 brothers, Bill & Charlie have already graduated from school. Bill (oldest) works as a curse breaker for Gringotts Bank, Charlie works with dragons in Romania. Percy is the oldest still at school and is a Prefect (not head of Griffyndor). Then you have Fred, George, then Ron and lastly Ginny.

The phoenix mention you talked at middle point was at the wandshop,every wand has a "core" inside a wood which gives the power to it (the wood also has to contain some),there are different types,dragon heart string which is powerful,unicorn hair(i dont remember what it's advantages are) and phoenix feather(also dont remember what it does) and maybe there are more but i remember this 3,Harry's wand has phoenix feather,in fact its from the same Phoenix Fawkes,you saw in dumbledoor's office,Olivander(the wandshop dude) talked about it because Fawkes gave only 2 feathers for wands,one is Harry's the other is Voldemort's. This will be crucial later. In the book it was magical paint that couldnt be washed down from the wall(the message on the wall) not blood. And some fun fact Snape is probably the 3rd maybe arguably the 4th strongest living wizard in his age, 1. Dumbledoor,2 Voldemort,3 Snape, 4th Bellatrix Lestrange(you will meet her a bit later).

7:35 No Veggie, they don't know (EDIT: I mean the Masons specifically. Some in the town are aware the Dursleys have another child, but it isn't brought up in any relevant way, and the first movie glossed over where the book brought it up. I apologize for any confusion from my response). I don't know if the extended version mentions it in the film, but in the book they excuse what happens as him being a "disturbed boy" and that they had reason to hide him due to that. Also, Veggie, I'll directly quote the joke right here: "An American goes to Japan to close a big business deal. The night before, he is very tense so he picks up a hooker in the hotel bar. She speaks no English, but they get their transaction settled and go to his room. In bed, she is wildly thrashing around screaming out a phrase in Japanese. The man figures she is loving it and tries to remember what she is yelling. The next day, he is playing golf with his Japanese customer. On the third tee, the Japanese man swings, the ball makes a beautiful arc, hits the green, bounces twice, rolls, and winds up right in the cup -- a hole in one! Thinking to impress his client, the man repeats the phrase he had heard so much the night before. The Japanese golfer eyes him and says, "What you mean.... wrong hole?"

@@resathe6760 (I don't know why, but KZbin didn't notify me about this, good thing I checked) No, I meant the Masons specifically because Veggie, if I remember correctly, does bring up just the Masons knowing at some point, likely before saying people in general, and I was answering _that_ The general thing about people knowing I probably didn't even notice, so I can understand the confusion. Either I misunderstood what Veggie specifically was referring to, or was answering a slightly different question than you thought I was, so it was a simple miscommunication, no problem. EDIT: I just checked the moment I stamped, no, Veggie said people in general, but I mistakenly thought he was just referring to the Masons or people _invited over_ like they were, not the literal population in general of the town, or relatives like Marge or anything. My mistake, I apologize for the confusion. I was too focused on the specific scene to think about the generality of how Veggie said it would affect my response, whoops.

Wandmaker John Hurt said that the phoenix whose feather is the core of Harry's wand gave one more feather, - and one only - which ended up in the wand that gave Harry that scar, so Voldemort and Harry have wands whose cores have a common origin. And each time the wand chose the wizard. The first film introduced the world to Harry and to use, establishing what that world was: now we can get into plot a lot more. Talking about the films getting darker: if you notice the Warner Brothers logo at the beginning of each film, they get darker too. I've never known a film logo change before, certainly not this much. There are vids that show the logos of each film and how they changed over the series.
