Don't forget that trees themselves will help retain the little waterfall that is there. Watch videos here and see how green oasis can be created even in Saudi Arabia and by the Dead sea by retaining what little rainfall they have. Having vegetation present as well as swales to let the water sink in is a key to acchieve this. The trees will also help lower the temperature in Summer.

China only gets little water because of their rampant pollution, poor water management, and just poor overall agricultural planning. You can't build the largest dam in the world, which holds back so much water it actually slowed the rotation of the entire planet earth, although in an almost unmeasurably small increment but still measurable, and not think you're going to affect the climate. Youve stopped billions and visions of gallons of water from moving downstream, which on china's case is to the east, which is exactly why these rivers are now dry. They're just ideological idiots who value loyalty to xi over all. China is doomed, and it's their own fault. They won't be able to spy or steal their way out of collapse.

And the soil algae that tends to coat the top surface of the soil needs to be broken up periodically. Hoofed mammals are good at naturally doing that. Those juniper trees were an excellent choice. The similar leylandi cypress grows where I live in the tropics, all the way north to past the Canadian Border. Some long-needled pine trees are very good at dropping a layer of pine needles onto the ground and allowing other plants to spring up, colonize and take over.

The success of this project is in part due to the Chinese peoples commitment to improve the quality of life in their country. Where else in the world would 500+ million people come out on such a mission? This is “citizen participation” beyond anything we have seen in recent history. The planting of trees has become so popular that there are organized tour groups to make it easy for people to make the trip and do their community service, civic duty. A spin off has been the expansion of new service industries in the region such as hotels, shops, transportation hubs, air, and even some new desert resorts. All contributing to economic growth and new employment opportunities.

There has to be a logical way to engineer the excessive water from flooding to flow to the desert where it can be put to good use. If highway systems, power lines, and sewer lines can be constructed, surely 'water highways' can be constructed with massive retention ponds, not unlike those used on golf courses where when the sprinkler systems are used to water the fairways the water used in excess is recirculated from the roots back to the retention ponds.

The Chinese could turn their deserts into good usable land, but if they really want nature to thrive, they need to build up the soil. Without adding a lot of biochar and some compost to the desert soil, it will take generations before the soil improves. If the Chinese were smart and knew agriculture and soil to an expert level, they would have begun doing this ages ago. It's not too late to add the biochar later, that's a lot of time and growth opportunity lost.
