In 1980, AC DC lead singer Bon Scott died under tragic and mysterious circumstances... missing his band’s big break Back in Black by a matter of months. His replacement, another iconic rocker, named Brian Johnson was selected by guitarists and brothers Angus and Malcolm Young… They all picked up the pieces and penned the biggest rock album of all time. Yet questions linger about how much of the album They actually wrote. Following the trail of a supposed 40-year cover-up, today we examine the testimonies of bandmates, girlfriends, and confidants... to uncover the authorship of the superior rocker You Shook Me All Night… from the 80s masterpiece.

1979 and 1980 were an emotional roller coaster for AC/DC. Over the course of 12 months, the group went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. One of those peaks was in July of 79, when the band released their sixth album Highway to Hell. This landmark record went to #17 in the US, #13 in Australia, and #8 in the UK and produced their highest charting single up to that point... Highway to Hell, which went to #4 on the British charts.
AC/DC was poised for a huge commercial breakout after the success of Highway to Hell, especially in the US. But prior to its release, the band had received very little airplay in America, and their US label Atlantic Records had given them paltry marketing support... even rejecting their 1976 album ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ for domestic distribution.
To remedy the situation, legendary producer Mutt Lange was brought on board and would go on to produce Highway to Hell, Back in Black, and For Those About to Rock We Salute You. At first brothers Angus & Malcolm Young were angry about Lange, feeling Atlantic was disrespecting their older brother George, who had co-produced their previous albums.
But the band ultimately acquiesced, and Mutt worked his sonic sorcery to help the band create catchier, more accessible songs for radio. The plan worked and Highway to Hell became AC/DC's best seller in the US. But then the roller coaster hit rock bottom on February 19, 1980, when front man Bon Scott was found dead in a friend’s car in London, after a heavy night of partying. The official cause of death was classified as “alcohol poisoning” and “death by misadventure". The loss of Bon was absolutely crushing. Not only had AC/DC had lost their charismatic lead singer, but also their primary lyricist over six studio albums.
Bon’s close friends and family, particularly his father, encouraged AC/C to forge ahead without him. So, the band began their hunt for a front man following Bon’s funeral. Auditions began to find a replacement for Scott, and some notable candidates vied for the gig, including Slade’s Noddy Holder.

I can't believe people haven't figured it out yet, no, Brian probably didn't write those songs himself, but there wasn't some secret black book full of lyrics left behind by Bonn. Think about it, who was there with Brian in the Bahamas when he wrote it? Mutt Lange, the most prolific writer and producer of that era, he's the one that filled in all the blanks, not Bonn's ghost, I just can't believe that people can't put two plus two together on that one. Mutt probably did most of the writing coaching Brian through the process and just let those guys take all the credit seeing how they were going through so much.

I was in grand nine. I took a magic marker and put ACDC on the back of my faded jean jacket. Every day, after my hour long bus ride home, I'd put Back In Black on my cheap plastic turntable and tortured my speakers as I screamed and air guitared. I'm sure I was one of thousands and thousands of teenaged boys who were banging their heads and whipping around our long metal hair just like me. Imagine all those Angus wannabes jumping up and down in their rooms. Part of AC/DC’s appeal is that true fans know how great they are and don’t need a radio top 40 list to confirm it. To think that “Money Talks” is their highest charting hit is a travesty. They have so many iconic hits that if you listen carefully to American sporting events you’ll hear “Hells Bells” or “Thunderstruck” in the background, how many movies have used “Shoot To Thrill” or “Back in Black” , etc, etc. I don’t care who gets credit, AC/DC rocks and I like both dudes. Brian has always paid huge respects to Bon and Bon saying that Brian was replacement for him if something were to happen to him is good enough for me. The fact that Axl Rose thought it an honor to complete the Rock or Bust tour is a testament to how other legends feel about AC/DC’s status in the rock world. I hope, and I think I speak for all the AC/DC fans worldwide, that the rock gods put together one last tour in support of their “Power Up” album. It’d be a fitting tribute to Malcolm and one last chance for us fans to show the band how much we love them and appreciate their always delivering pure, unadulterated rock n roll.

If Bon wrote it in full or in part, they need to just give him credit. It's actually kind of weird that they deny it so vehemently. An old friend of mine read Fink's book and we went back and forth for hours arguing about this. From my perspective (team Brian) I had a couple of conclusions: 1) It felt like Bon was family to the Youngs, an older brother who they looked up to and a firm partner in the the band. If they nicked a bunch of lyrics from Bon's notebooks why wouldn't they give him credit? The album was a tribute to Bon's memory, so it would be absolutely apropos to give him credit where he deserved it. 2) From every anecdotal source I've ever heard talk about Brian he comes off as one of the most big-hearted and nicest guys on the planet and so why would he enter into this conspiracy with the Young brothers to disrespect Bon's memory like this? 3) I can only conceive that the only reasons why they would cut Bon out of the songwriting credits would be a combination of utter greed and to give Brian instant credibility as the new lead singer. I would hate to believe that the Youngs were capable of something like that just months after burying their friend and that Johnson would go along with it.

His notebooks dissappearing was as suspicious as his death. I can completely understand Malcolm not crediting Bon simply because it would not sit well, as a whole, with the new spirit de corps of the new set up. There is a story of how he went to see Bon's parents to explain the situation , where as it would look better to have the new guy write them. However, the band would give Bon's royalty shares to the Scott family. That makes a lot of sense to me. Malcolm was a closed shop when it came to disclosing anything.

I can't believe people can't figure this one out, there wasn't some notebook, that's a fairytale. Who was with Brian in the Bahamas when those songs were written? Mutt Lange, the most prolific writer and producer of that era, he helped Brian through the writing process and then just allowed those guys to take credit for the songs because of what they were going through and to help them with their comeback after such a tragedy. For the life of me I can't believe people can't put two plus two together on that one, Brian talks about how he and Mutt were sitting there when a storm was rolling in and Hell's Bell's was written, He and MUTT were sitting there. Mutt Lange, there's the answer to the big mystery about those songs being written, he sat there with Brian and helped him write those songs and let the band get all the credit for them because of what they were going through. Highway to Hell, Back in Black and For Those About to Rock were all albums that Mutt was in on and they were all huge hits, then they parted ways with him and their album's all tanked out until The Razors Edge with the hit Thunderstruck in 1990. Not hard to figure out.

There are only three bands that literally define rock and roll: the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and of course AC/DC. If I had to pick only one song to represent the genre, probably “Thunderstruck”, but there are probably two dozen AC/DC songs that would serve equally well. No other band even comes close to the number of genre-defining songs.

The first time I saw AC/DC was September 1979, "Highway to Hell" tour with Bon Scott. The Long Beach Arena was cut in half with a black drape. Only 3,900 fans watching and listening to this amazing band. Best $7.50 I ever spent. In 12 months, September 1980 for the "Back in Black" tour at the same venue with Brian. In the 70's for me and my friends it was Led Zep, Stones, Aerosmith, and AC/DC. RnR and live music was everything.

Lifetime fan of AC⚡️DC. I was 16 yrs old when this album released. KISW, "Seattle's best rock" radio station in Seattle played it CONSTANTLY. We were all Bon Scott fans after "Highway to hell" had seduced us into loving AC/DC. Many of us had a hard time getting into Brian Johnson's voice though. I still hear some of my friends debate this. But the proof is in the puddin. I've seen AC/DC every time they have visited Seattle or Tacoma. I have learned to play most of Malcolm Young's rhythm parts on the guitar. They're easy to play. But HE invented them. He IS, and WAS, truly a rock guitar icon and an artist. Then there is Angus. OMG... ANGUS. I love that guy. AC/DC's rhythm section with Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd is simplicity perfection. Never missing their mark or timing LIVE. As accurate as an atomic clock. You could adjust the timing on your cars engine with Cliff and Phil. Love this band FOREVER!!!!

@ Stephen Brown Such a perfect album ! I also have such awesome memories of hearing "You Shook Me All Night Long" blaring from the Trans Am's of the cool guys in our Junior High parking lot which induced me to buy "Back In Black"... my first heavy album as a 12 year old !... Really my first "adult" album, really... That year, it was just before grading, exams were over, just waiting for report cards, and I was running back to school from lunch via a short cut on a path through the woods and I was running really fast, making good time when I tripped on a small stump and fell into a smashed broken beer bottle. When I got up there was a curved piece of broken glass imbedded in the palm of my hand that I had to pull out and it was GUSHING blood ! So I jammed my hand in the crook of my other elbow to keep pressure on it, just SOAKING my faded jean jacket with blood and started to retrace my path back home, but I knew with the loss of blood that there would be no way I'd make it, so I stopped a younger girl I knew whose mother I knew was a nurse and asked her if her mom had gone to work yet and she hadn't, so she took me to her home and her mom bandaged my hand and drove me down to the hospital she worked at a couple of hours early for her shift lol. I remember so vividly being in the emergency room bed, my mom arriving and the doctor examining my wound. My mom was describing the doctor feeling around in the wound for foreign debris and my mom was showing me that "he's got his finger in there like this !" and she mimed her finger rotating around inside the gap between her thumb and index finger of her other hand LOL and I was like near fainting and throwing up LOL. And then when it came time to stitch it up, the bed next to mine had a drunk guy getting his stomach pumped and he was thrashing around and making the curtain between our cubicles wave wildly and the doctor's hands were shaking nervously as he was inserting the needle to freeze my hand for stitches LOL.. So there I was, the first month of summer vacation with my hand bandaged up, couldn't go swimming or playing in the woods or any baseball or anything, just up in my room with a record player / stereo system that I had just got for grading for my room that I had just moved into up in the attic a few months before and my first adult album I got for it, "Back In Black" and because I didn't have the full use of my hand I just played, and played repeatedly over and over that entire album all summer ! GOOD TIMES ! ... It just occurred to me how cool it would have been if my mom had kept that bloodied jacket and if I had covered it with AC⚡DC patches and pins ! hardly washing the stains out !... FUCKING AWESOME ! Talk about "If You Want Blood You Got It" !

If you think BIB is heavy with the instruments "up in the front of the mixing", listen to Let There Be Rock, produced by George Young in '77. If anything, Lange held them back, making them more appealing to the more "pop rock" oriented audience in the US at the time, which is exactly why they hired him. The Highway to Hell, Back in Black and For Those About to Rock era (all produced by Lange) is the closest AC/DC ever came to "selling out".

George Harrison stated that he wrote 3 lines of Eleanor Rigby and some of the lines in Come Together, but received no credit, nor royalties. He wasn’t complaining, but just stating that’s how song writing goes. Similarly, with You Shook Me. Maybe there were some of Bon’s short phrases borrowed or changed, but in my humble opinion, the Young’s and Brian deservedly received credit for writing the song.

The fact that the album was recorded in 6 weeks, and that Johnson only joined the band a month after Bon's death, leads me to believe the majority of the music and lyrics had to have been close to completion when they started recording. Now, that's not to say there weren't changes along the way during the actual recordings and in post-production. But my guts tell me that Bon co-wrote most of the songs, but Brian took them and put his own 'stank' on them making them his own. Regardless, it was one of the most monumental rock albums of all time. People will be listening to this album for decades if not centuries from now.

Thank you Adam Reader for being the rock n roll archivist that this art form deserves. I still remember hearing "You Shook Me" on the jukebox for the first time at my school. The absolute requirement for every Rock band to be successful is a distinctive voice. Never sell that requirement short. Every great band has one. Bon Scott had a one in a million voice. For what Angus and Malcom were doing with their guitars you needed a wailing demon of a singer. When Bon died no way can you replace THAT. AC/DC got lucky, damn lucky. If the guys weren't completely honest about who wrote what think about how much was at stake. Millions. It's the third best selling album of all time. Brian Johnson saved AC/DC with his one in a million voice. The publishing rights is a gift that keeps giving. Is the motivation there to pull a fast one? Sure. But what about integrity? Would Brian and Malcom have done something like that? Check out all their other dealings, anything dishonest going on? I don't know, but to quote a later AC/DC song: "money changes everything."

IMHO, Brian Johnson took idea’s and lines of what Bon had written down for that song and possibly others. When you look at lyrics from for those about to rock you see on full display Brian Johnson’s lyrical style. It was nothing like Bons! The contrast from back in black and for those about to rock is evident. BON had a big lyrical influence on back in black. You can hear it, feel it, taste it.

There is always mystery when dealing with Bon a true legend of rock for sure. However, AC/DC, would have had no problem giving Bon credit as a lasting tribute adding to the legend to his creative genius. It makes no sense why they would deny him credit. Especially after his death that rocked AC/DC to the core who would have broken up if not for Bon's family. Love AC/DC my first ablum was Back in Black. I am a 80s brat and Johnson era is AC/DC to me, but Bon was awesome for sure!

The only logical explanation as to why they might not credit Bonn is from a marketing perspective the easiest way to get audiences to accept the new vocalist going forward would be to have him credited with songs mirroring Bonn’s style.so there is a strong motive but weather or not that is what happened no one will ever know for sure.

Their recent video from 2021 The Mists Of Time pays tribute to Bon and Malcolm through the hard times of the band from start to finish. Though from my view, Dave Evan's and Axl Rose's contributions should have gotten at least 1 photo mentioned since Dave is their original singer though just for Can I Sit Next To You Girl as the first one and Axl took over for Brian in 2016 on the Rock Or Bust so Johnsom could rest his ears as to not have his one good one left become permanently damaged.

What makes no sense is how people can listen to the albums after Back in Black and not notice how the lyrics on those are full of nonsense word salad lyrics. But for some reason BIB isn't, full of stories that have a clear narrative just like all of Bon's records. Must just be a coincidence

AC/DC was an afterthought to a Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush concert I saw. They played after the main show, and very few people were left to watch them, because almost nobody there knew who they were yet. I'm glad I stayed to see Bon Scott, and the band that made a big impression that night, even if there were few to witness it.

A few things to consider; Brian' s contribution to the 3 or 4 Geordie albums was only co-writing about 4 or 5 songs. Unless he wrote a ton of material and it simply wasn't used, he wasn't a brilliant or prolific lyricist. Bon's notebooks disappeared from his apartment after he died. The lyrics on the album Back In Black are full of cleverness and double entendre, something Bon always did in his lyrics. Bon's family continues to get royalty checks for the album Back In Black. These are not opinions, they are facts. Make of them what you will.

It's a fantastic rock song that's full of energy. Although that applies to so much of AC/DC's output. I didn't get into anything by AC/DC until the Stephen King movie, Maximum Overdrive. Movie wasn't much to talk about but the soundtrack was. So Brain Johnson had been lead singer for a while and it wasn't until I looked into their back catalogue that I heard of Bon Scott. Obviously I don't know who wrote it but for the ones saying it was Scott, it's all very circumstantial and from people with a positively biased POV. Who knows and to me it shouldn't really matter to any one outside of Scott and the band. Take the song for what it is and enjoy it.

It is amazing how fast they brought on Brian, cut a monster of an album and hit the road. I saw them in concert on September 11th, 1980, they were so polished after what? a few weeks on the road. Acdc reads like a good book. Everything that is supposed to happen, does. Loudest concert I have ever been too, ears rang for days. It was then that I discovered Bon Scott. As tragic as it was, I always felt that it was all meant to be. Greatest front man ever replaced by the greatest front man ever, what are the odds? Just impossible- they are Rock and roll and we are all better for having had acdc in our lives. What a band!

There are no lyrics on BIB that come anywhere near Bon at his best or even his most serviceable. Folks confuse commercial success with lyrical quality. Most fans can’t give a single fuck about lyrical quality. It’s the riffs and Brian’s vocals that make BIB what it is. Btw, the lyrics on BIB sound exactly like whoever wrote the lyrics to each subsequent AC/DC album until 1990. Again, people are willfully confusing lyrical quality with commercial success. It’s just sour grapes on the part of Bon diehards, and it’s pathetic.

@@jhutch888 That album was half written when he got there, Brian spent his time and energy screaming high notes for Mutt Lang. There's a death clause in every contract and Bon Scott's lyric notebooks were immediately claimed and seized by AC/DC management and have never resurfaced. @@ponzo1967 half written? Based on what evidence? Mal even said the stupidest thing they could have done was not use Bon lyrics if they were there. But they were not. Biggest bit of evidence is that the lyrics sound absolutely nothing like even the least of Bon’s work. It’s hilarious to talk about how Bon was one of the greatest storytellers in rock and then insist that a batch of truly subpar lyrics are his. And the way you talk about Brian gives your whole game away. It’s all about taking the proper credit from Brian. If BIB was a bomb you’d be talking about how it’s all because of the crap Brian lyrics. Go listen to For Those About To Rock and Flick Of The Switch and you’ll hear some very similar lyrics. Why did the lyrics get “so much worse” after BIB? Well, Brian no longer had taskmaster Mutt to work with and the other guys were checked out.

Questions: why would Bon write a song called Back In Black? “Back in the back of a Cadillac ?” Why on earth would Bon write that? “Given The Dog A Bon.” That’s Bon?? Lol! “You bitch, you must be gettin old.” That’s Bon? ALL of Shake A Leg? That’s Bon? Hell’s Bells? Why would Bon write that?? Nothing on the album sounds like Bon other than maybe “She told me to come but I was already there” because that’s actually kind of clever. But any 7th grader could have come up with that one.

Keep in mind that, when AC/DC were recording "Back In Black", they had no idea that it would go on to sell 40 million copies. Nobody knew that people would still be talking about its authorship 42 years later. It boggles the mind that this is the case. Bon may have written some of the lyrics, but Brian clearly also contributed. The title track in particular could not have been written by Bon. How could Bon have contributed to a song whose title refers to his own death? The same reasoning probably applies to "Hells Bells" as well.

Back In Black was my first AC/DC album - I was in 8th Grade and when the bells were joined by the guitars on the opening track I got shivers - I didn't even know who Bon was but I quickly learned and by the time For Those About To Rock came out had every AC/DC album released in America. But back to Back and Black - even if Bon wrote You Shook Me I think the band was trying to make the entire album a tribute to him and didn't want to make it about something less or about the small pieces he may have contributed. It was like "hey - quit looking at that mole hill over there - look at this mountain over here because THAT is how much Bon meant to us." Bon was special - but so was Back in Black - I don't know if there was room for that much special in one universe to contain all at once
