Koloth Yeah that’s valid. It’s definitely not better than Chrono Trigger, but I really enjoyed it still. Had an interesting setting and vibe and I love games where there are a lot of characters to recruit. I also enjoy the vibe and setting of FF8 though it’s far from my favorite of the series, but I think I gets more hate then it deserves. The skill system is a bit convoluted but it’s also kinda fun to totally break the game early on with the card concerting skills.
@joaomarcoscosta46474 жыл бұрын
@@irvingkirvan5284 Yeah, same. I don`t think Chrono Cross is on the level of Chrono Trigger... Some of the optional characters are indeed really weird, and the battle system is kinda slow, and the game overall feels a bit bloated, (it bothered me how many characters were introduced to the story and then kind of forgotten without ever getting a proper arc or resolution) but... Damn, it had a fantastic soundtrack, some of the best visuals on a PS1 game, interesting story, and setting, and I liked the way the main characters were handled, at least. I kinda wish people would stop hating on games simply because of "how they compare to their predecessor", and judged them on their own merits. Although I get that when you are really invested in a franchise it can be a difficult thing to do.

Your "gospel" approach to reviews has to do with the fact that most "reviewers" on KZbin don't really review the games, instead just telling you "yo guys, this game is awesome!" or "damn, this game suuuuuuuuuuucks!". A good review is one that gives you enough info to decide whether you might like a game or not, regardless of whether the reviewer likes it or not. Man I love Chrono Cross but I totally see where you're coming from. The main problem with that game is one's expectations coming into it. Most people were expecting a Chrono Trigger 2, and the way this was developed was truly a bit like you expressed it. They wanted to do "The opposite". I believe the team had such an awful time developing the first game (Mitsuda reportedly had to admit himself into the hospital after the release, cause he had overworked himself at the cost of his own health) that they were like... "Let's not do that" so they tried to create something as far removed from the original as possible. If you come into the game expecting a second Trigger, boy are you in for a disappointment. But if you take it with a clean slate, as a completely original game with a loose connection via lore with the first, this game is such a treat. And yeah I do aknowledge that the fact that this connection is revealed over a huge exposition dump near the end of the game is a bit crap. But the rest is nice :) Also, it's truly dumb to get mad cause someone else doesn't like a game you like, who does that? Oh, yeah... the internet, I forgot

Some characters are downright annoying (I'm looking at you, Squall and Seifer) and the romance between Squall and Rinoa is just meh in my opinion. Second legit look who he has for team mates (horny teacher, ADHD man guy who in a world of guns, robots and literal summoned gods...punches things, Girl who im pretty sure huffs paint (and is the insanely enough the one who tends to fuck up the least on missions, Sharpshooter who uses a shotgun (huh?) who hits on anything with a pair of legs and tits, and a retarded resistance leader who your boss sold you into slavery for) if i had to deal with that level of incompetence everyday id become a massive dick also or try and swallow my gunblade rapidly pulling the trigger the entire time. The story agreed makes little sense overall but as its less about overcoming a great evil though cunning or strength and more who can fail hard enough to give the other side an advantage. As for the junction system the problem i have with it is flat out, its broken. You either dont get it and will get absolutely bodied by normal encounters, or you understand it and are basically playing in god mode...there is no balance.

Lol, your top four over rated is almost the same as mine, just flip top two. And for Cross fans that think it's story is a higher level of thinking and not a convoluted mess, I think this argument on reddit pretty much sums it up the best: "You're welcome to explain the deep meaningful plot of how the old guy from Chrono Trigger who gives you the airship planned for a small child to contract an illness, have his dad sail into the robot city that controls the flow of time where he causes a dimensional split and the supercomputer coded by Lucca to manage time spends 10 years teamed up with the dragon god of the moon who's his mortal enemy in order to kill the main character so that he'd run into Schala's reincarnation, then switches bodies with his dad who's trying to kill him because that's what the Chrono Cross does when it's not powered up, where he frees all the dragons from another dimension where the reptites won, who got transported back in time, lost against the evil supercomputer who's also your dad, then got split up into 6 dragons just chilling on these islands, who are trying to fuck with the world in order to power up the Chrono Cross in order to extract Schala from Lavos, who is now devouring time instead of the world. yeah very good paced plot that isn't convoluted at all. Nobody's denying chrono trigger is a simple game but you see, it was simple and well executed. Every part of Chrono Trigger fit nicely with every other part of Chrono Trigger, down to a stupid minigame at the first event you pass. Chrono Cross has a relationship map that makes no sense with characters who have no reason to join the party past "well we made them a character portrait, guess you're in the party."

Big fan of Rogue Galaxy but I can kind of understand your problems with it even though they never bothered me too much. I won't lie though, I actually wish it was a bit harder in terms of difficulty since once you get past zerard, outside of the solo battle with dingo, the game never really challenges you much as it did within the opening hours (just like DC2) and on future playthroughs you start realizing that block cancelling your attacks makes combat a non-issue so long as you're paying attention and lets you get in and out of an enemies attacks with relative ease since everything attacks pretty slow. Only thing I will agree with is that the balancing is pretty wack. The screen wipe attacks needed more hard counters to them since late game you can just walk into a fight, spam them and the enemy will be dead before they even have a chance to move, items should've been used in real time as well as using up points on the action bar so that you couldn't just tank a hit and then be free to heal it all back up. This would probably solve your issue with the damage too since the only reason it is so high is more than likely to make up for the fact that you can pause and heal (I just thank god it doesn't reach one shot levels of bad like Nier Automata) and make you have to think before using one, the amounts could also just be decreased as well. Another problem is that character balance is massively skewed in favor of Jaster, Kisala and Zegram who get the best skills in the game and while the others aren't bad, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage a lot of the time with anybody else. Jaster in particular is pretty stupid since you can get his best skill very early if you know what to put on and his best weapon for the last chunk of the main game can be gotten by the time your halfway through it with relative ease, not only invalidating the weapons that you DO actually need to go on a scavenger hunt and crafting sidequest for but also putting him leaps and bounds above everyone else because no other character gets a weapon this powerful even by the end of the game. Sorry this post went on a bit long, I tend to rant when talking about the games I enjoy a good deal.

It also got an awesome speed-based battle system where you can strike as many times as you want during your phase and can actually defend from enemy attacks in enemy phase. Though AT1 is mediocre and I don't recommend it. Suikoden 3. I liked the switching POV and the plot, characters like Chris and Geddoe and many others, and especially the main antagonist Luc, not to mention the secret POV of said antagonist if you collected all 108 Stars of Destiny. Also loved the revamped gameplay, with the skill system that allows you to better customize your fighters. Final Fantasy VII Remake. So many people panned the ending for how "nonsensical, weird and lore-ruining" it is. But I personally loved that it left so many questions, which is what an "episode 1 ending" is meant to do, loved the meta-twist about the Whispers, and think that even if you don't have played the original, you can still appreciate it. Games I disliked: Persona 5. I think it was OK. A good game, but not as good in terms of plot as many make it out to be. Also, wasn't fan of the social stat constraints for Social Links, especially Iwai and Haru who require really strict constraints to even start the SL. Also, wasn't a big fan of the characters, I mean, we had Yusuke, Futaba, Makoto, but we also have Ryuji, Ann and Haru. And Joker is my most hated MC in JRPGs ever because Atlus don't know whether they want an established MC or an avatar, so they made a non-character that fails at both. Chrono Trigger. It too was OK. I wasn't particularly impressed by its characters, much less the plot, it ll came across as "decent" to me, though I did like the battle system and dual techs. Though I did love Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes and Chrono Cross.

I bought Legend of Dragoon back in the day after all the hype it got from a few PlayStation magazines, hoping for it to be on par with the PS1 Final Fantasy games. Whilst I don't hate LoD, I was pretty underwhelmed by it honestly. Its okay, but personally I find the love for the game a real headscratcher personally. I can't stand Final Fantasy X personally, for me it was the start of the decline of Final Fantasy, with pretty much everything I dislike about the games today feels like it originated from that game. But I seem to be in the minority in holding that opinion.

FFX had a nice battle system, though. It was a nice compromise between ATB and pure Turn-Based, and it would be a very similar battle system that JRPGs would go on to use in games like Shadow Hearts 2, SH3, and a few others. The Sphere Grid was just a hot mess, though. I would have preferred straight levelups and give characters identities and stick to them like FF4 did.

You're not alone, for me final fantasy ended after 7. Don't get me wrong, I liked 9 ok actually, but 8, 10, and basically everything after just didn't do anything for me. I did have a bit of fun with FFXIV more recently, but that got boring after awhile and I havent played it since square decided to steal my money. Now I can't buy their games anymore unfortunately. It sucks because before the merger square and enix were probably responsible for the most treasured gaming memories of my childhood. Anyway, I'll stop talking now before I get even further off-topic.

yeah we're definitely in the minority on ffx, it was nowhere near what i wanted. what i wanted and expected was the 7-9 formula with next gen graphics and a slightly bigger world map to navigate and explore. i think that's what most people wanted but the shiny new graphics made them forget everything else at the time. the only reason xiii wasny more popular among the majority is because the graphics upgrade from ps2 to ps3 didn't feel as extreme as the jump from ps1 to ps2. honestly i find the xiii trilogy to be more fun and interesting than x and x-2. and especially enjoyed lightning returns because of the more open structure and the huge amount of customization.

@@Jack_80 I despised 13 because of the wonky decisions made to its battle system design, to be honest, and how on-rails I've read the game is, where it's basically a hallway simulator with battles, and I've seen youtube footage of the other 2 games in the series and.... it's all 5, 6 digit numbers all over the screen, it's like "BIGGER NUMBERS MOAR DAMAGE MOAR FUN!!!!!" ... I was never a fan of absurdly huge numbers in JRPGs. They are just not necessary. That just points to either a lack of proper game balance, or the devs wanting to make everything look cool and flashy when they see *99999* all over the screen several times a second.

I liked Final Fantasy X more on my second attempt to play when I bought the X and X-2 HD remasters but I remember being completely disappointed on my original play-through-I still haven't made it to the very last battle. World exploration is what made the PSX Final fantasies so great (save Tactics which was a gem for other reasons) so the linear nature of X is a major downgrade and Blitz Ball is horrifically boring. Add a crew of unlikeable (Wakka) or just unusable (Kimahri) characters and it's not an easy game to enjoy.

I love the 7th saga. The game has replayability, a very unique story and plot twist. The crystal ball system let's you see enemies on the world map as dots. I always wondered why in every rpg you are always alone in the world map, in dungeons and only you have plans to save the world. How come other NPCs are not actively doing the same thing? That is what makes the 7th saga unique.

I loved that 7th Saga had some actual challenge and wasn't "Mash Fight Command to Win" like a lot of RPGs at the time commonly were. Just going attack attack attack in 7th Saga will get you killed fast, and I liked that about the game. I tried playing the Elnard "rebalance" and it was just stupidly easy. They took out like 80% of the challenge and you could just steamroll the game with minimal thought. Olvaan's speed is too low which leads to a lot of missing at inopportune times, and his spell list is slightly different (and he has less MP and Magic). In fact two characters from said game made appearances on both his worst character list (Kongol) and best character list (Meru). I would love to hear both yours and his opinion on Legend of Legaia another good PS1 game that is highly underrated. On Chrono Cross, Trigger was better and more focused, they could have cut out a few side characters of Cross and not lost anything and the ending could have been better. FFVIII I hate the Juction system but I hate FFX's Spheregrid more which it follows the DS remake of FFIII. @@jowellgamingshow6907 The spheregird of FFX was badly implemented, after you unlock all the pathways you could pretty much sail through the game with a party of one to three character never having a need to switch out except for obvious reasons. The liecense board of FFXII was more streamlined version of the spheregrid but again you could use a set party after you bought everything. Now the Crystairum of FFXIII was set up better as not only did the fact that each character had their own path they didn't all learn the same skills nor end up with the same stats by the end of it, not that FFXIII was perfect by any means. Legaia 2 in my opinion ruined the legaia as a franchise, the final boss was a joke if you completed even a fraction of the sidequests and even then there wasn't any challenge like Legend of Legaia, I got stuck three times (Second Boss fight of Sol tower, First boss fight of the four back to back bosses, and the final boss) didn't get stuck on any boss of Legaia 2 which I find sad. Shadow Hearts is another good game that I've played that uses a different battle system that they kind of used everywhere in the game, some that I have no words for, but the third game ran off with a running gag from the second and turned me off due to the gag in the second game was comedic but in the third it was terrible.

5) Valkyrie Profile = When I played this when I was young, yes it is very easy to miss out on the requirements. When I played it again with a planet-load of experience behind my back, They do provide hints. Freya does. 4) Rogue Galaxy = No idea, I'll skip this 3) Legend of Dragoon = The younger me says that I agree that the item limit is "unexpected" and unfair. But the experienced me says that it is part of the game too for balancing purposes. Games such as Star Ocean 2nd Story (while it has a 20 limit per item) is very over powered because you have too much of item types and add the fact that those effects are boosted. Yes, both versions of myself agree that it is taking a long time to complete regular encounters but come to think of it it was made that way to focus on your additions. I guess additions are good when you are just starting with them but when you've mastered it enough (You as player not maxing the addition level) it will be a bore. 2) Chrono Cross = Yes, I agree that there are too many characters are there and a good amount of them are useless. While there are some stories behind each character they are so trivial to the point that I can't forget how useless they are. 1) Final Fantasy VIII = Yes, I agree that there really isn't much that makes the characters unique apart from their Limit Breaks and looking at the top characters list of the game its always based on their Limit Breaks --- 5) Popolocrois = Never played this, I won't say anything XD 4) Beyond and Beyond = This was the last game played by my master before we part ways and it never came to my mind until today, Thank you. I think I'll try it out. 3) Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter = Never played this, I won't say anything XD 2) Arcrise Fantasia = Hey it looks neat, I'll also give this a whirl! 1) The 7th Saga = Never played this, I won't say anything XD Overall, If I never watch any of your other videos, I may have a grudge on you. I think legend of dragoon is fine when it comes to the item limit, dragoons, and defending. In most RPGs you aren't limited in item slots to the point you eventually start hoarding healing items, status cure, stat boosts etc, so it becomes a non issue. LoD mostly consist of healing items, status cure, magic attacks, and other staple RPG items. I usually had a few each but more healing items. Plus it heals for half HP and some are full heals. Organizing it and making decisions on what you need makes it more interesting and tactical like when should I use this healing item, I shouldn't hoard it, I might get a treasure chest with a healing item along the way, or maybe I'll go back to town to buy some cures because enemies inflict status effects. Many times you'll have have max items so you need to drop something, that's another decision you need to make or if you plan ahead you'll be fine. Dragoon forms were interesting to gain meter by additions to access, some were better than others for sure like the healers but it was generally I have access to strong specials I'll use these. I could never get a perfectly timed dragoon attack idk why but their specials were used more so. Defending is great, the fact that you take 50% less damage? But also heal 10% of HP I believe and on top of the game for having limited healing options makes it more strategic or less boring. You're not relegated to just mashing X to attack, you have to plan your actions, think when to defend, or when to use a healing item. Just how many RPGs have a defend command that was this useful? I believe 7th Saga had a defend where you get an attack boost after which is great. Maybe I'm wrong about other RPGs having good defend commands where they take a significant amount of less damage but the way healing is in LoD makes it stand out to me.
@Jack_804 жыл бұрын
i love dragoon and agree with the strategic element of inventory management. it would be far too easy if you could carry unlimited items. also agree about the dragoon physical attack chains. i could pull them off but never fully understood the timing, i swear i would do identical timing 4 times in a row and only 1 or 2 times it would would. addition combos on the other hand were done perfectly, and when you failed one, you knew it was because you screwed up. i only have 2 minor complaints about dragoon, i think you should be able to guard in dragoon form and you should be able to transform back into human form on any turn. being stuck in dragoon form for 5 turns with no ability to guard can be a problem at times. you have to have a party member with a dragoon healing spell and make sure you have remaining mp to cast it. aside from those 2 little gripes though, it's such a unique and amazing game. i will never get tired of the addition system, that alone makes it one of the most fun and engaging combat systems in an rpg for me. most people who dislike the game are no good at chaining additions. admittedly, i wouldn't like the game nearly as much either if i couldn't do the additions, that's the most satisfying part of the game for me.
@greenpoolball51364 жыл бұрын
@@Jack_80 @Jack M Maybe the timing might get faster after each successful timing. I'd have to emulate the game just to have access to a save and load button to practice the timing lol. It's been a while since I've okay LoD so I vaguely recall how all of the dragoon system worked but I recall not being able to defend. Don't you get a decent defense boost or you take less damage? I would usually go into dragoon at max HP so it might have not been a big issue but yeah being able to untransform should be a thing. Additions are amazing yes, they're fun and you're rewarded with a sense of progression as you get more additions, it matters to the dragoon meter, leveling up additions, and especially them voice lines. I think additions are neat way to progress or challenge the player. Do you want to continue practicing additions or do you only use the early on additions because they're easier to do. It adds confliction to the player and that's a good thing to experience. I think Thorhighheels mentioned this in his review about how it's quite smart that the early additions are there for people who can't do them. Also I recommend watching the recent LoD retrospective by TheGoldenBolt if you haven't already, it only came out a month ago.

For me the game I dislike is Persona 3. All the characters felt like stock anime architypes who had tragic backstories for the sake of being tragic. It also added the "wildcard" power to the series which I hate as it makes the plot a chosen one story and only allows the main character to switch personas when in previous games the entire party could. Also they make it an instant game over if the main character dies which makes no sense in the persona series as previous games it had to be a party wipeout for a game over. Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is not only my favorite game but one nobody seems to have even heard of. Its graphics aren't the best but its story and gameplay more than make up for it featuring combination attacks called fusion spells, contacting the demon enemies as a way to end battles, and the helpful ability to stop your attack order and switch commands mid round. Also its the rare JRPG where the cast are all adults who encounter adult problems like regretting career paths, feeling pressured to be in a relationship, having past mistakes haunt you. Sorry if that got ranty… I do wholeheartedly agree with you on chrono Cross though the only thing I liked from that was the opening theme

Story-wise though, it’s actually connected very strongly to Trigger - made me cry a few times in the back half when the realizations started happening and I saw how beautiful it all was. Give it another try!

Arc rise Fantasia is MY FAVORITE GAME ON WII. Periodttt. I replayed it every single summer during high school AND college and will always have a place in my heart 😭😭😭 finally someone else who realizes how epic the story line is ... and i mean also Leslie is the total package and is on a VERY short list of women who could get it 😳😳😳

You forgot one thing great thing about Chrono Cross, that amazing soundtrack. But that was the best part of it. I really like Legend of Dragoon. I'm currently playing through it again. But gosh the translation is rocky. As for 7th Saga, I have been meaning to give it a try. It looks like a cool game.

Nice to see your list! Thanks for recommending Popolocrois, I might consider trying to pick up a PSP for it; it's unfortunately not available on the PSN store. It was nice to see 7th Saga on your list. That is one of my favourites and replay it at least every few months it seems. I liked Rogue Galaxy but some parts were very tedious.

Arc Rise Fantasia is hands down the best game on Wii. And no one I've ever mentioned it to has played it. Yes, the voice acting is atrocious - easily top 3 worst I've ever heard. But if you can ignore that, the rest of the game is incredible. Also, Valkyrie Profile sucks. Most of the rest of the list I either don't know or am pretty neutral on, but the one I have to disagree with strongly is Chrono Cross. I like it better than Trigger. I replayed them back-to-back in 2018 and when I got to Cross I just kept thinking "yeah Trigger was great, but this is so much better" I loved Legend of Dragoon when it came out, but every time I've tried to play it in recent years I got bored and quit just a couple hours in, so.. maybe you're onto something there.

I must say, bout ARFs va, that only the first half of the main characters are of a problematic nature (L'arc, Ryfia, Alf & Niko, perhaps Adele too depends) while the other half is pretty solid (Cecille, Serge, Rastan, Leslie, heck Ignacy, the final boss & Hosea are also promising).

I really liked Legend of Dragoon, and I’ll be honest, it’s mostly because of the concept. I love the idea of changing into a dragon dude, and a lot of the mythology was really cool. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not perfect, the XP system is just awful, random mobs give such low amounts of XP that grinding is almost nonexistent, and the bosses are, as a result, hard as balls, but I still enjoy it.

My #1 would be Symphonia Dawn of a New World. I played the ps3 version, and consider it one of my top 3 tales of games. I really enjoyed the antagonists like Alice, Decus, and Richter. Emil was a great protagonist. I really enjoyed the monster mechanics of recruitment and evolution.
@tombrooke1281 Жыл бұрын
Wow, I love the tales series but I definitely wouldn't choose this one as being anywhere near a number 1 choice in any list, universally or just within the Tales of franchise but I guess it's different strokes for different folks.

Man, our tastes are almost POLAR opposites. That said, I enjoy hearing other people's opinions. Nice video. Now I'm going to initiate my yearly playthrough of Cross and Dragoon. (VIII used to be my favorite, but on a replay a few years ago I realized the inevitable, it's pretty shitty)

I hated Chrono Cross when it first came out. It really grew on me once the story started to come together. I did hate the unnecessary swarm of characters with different accents though.
@marcosdheleno4 жыл бұрын
the way i see it, the massive cast is less about character development, and more about "everyone can be a hero". its pretty much a "hey, that dude looks cool, wanna play as him instead?" kind of thing you dont really see in games.

I feel that way about FF10. Everyone praising it all the time saying how they were touched by it and cried ect. But I was sooooo boooored. I wasn’t engaged at all. Oh I agree about Valkyrie profile. I want to play but I’m so discouraged by that get the right ending system. Too difficult. And I personally looove legend of dragoon but I can’t master battle system so all battles are even longer for me. Chrono Cross is just a spit in Chrono Trigger Legacy. I hate it.

You hit the nail on the head with Popolocrois and Beyond the Beyond, people make way too many assumptions if a game looks innocent and kiddy graphically when those are some of the darkest I've played. Beyond the Beyond is a game I believe gets a lot of shit because of expectations based on the console it's on rather than the game itself but if you ask me, it's a pretty fine game outside of it's encounter rate.
@osurpless4 жыл бұрын
I got about 1/3 of the way through 7th Saga when it first came out, and while I admired that that it’s one of the few RPGs in which the defense command is necessary/useful (Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon are noteworthy others), it was pretty clear that it was too grind heavy to want to continue. Thanks for mentioning the rom hack, as while I’ve yet to try the adjustments, it does indeed sound Iike it addresses a lot of the localization errors, as I’ve read that the JPN version Elrand is much more balanced. As for Cross and VIII, I like both games explicitly because it isn’t identical to previous entries. Whereas VII just copied VI’s gameplay and simplified it via Materia via easy switching between characters, VIII at least did something unique with its gameplay. This lets you do all kinds of handicap runs (low level, no GF, high level) especially once you learn drawing magic is largely a waste of time. Be it through playing cards or finding items, refining items is the real way to get magic. As for Cross, the words of the developer speak to the intentions of the game: “After the announcement of “Cross” this time, I heard a lot of voices out there that were saying things like, ‘Man, this isn’t CHRONO.’ To tell you the truth, I was gravely disappointed. Yes, the platform changed; and yes, there were many parts that changed dramatically from the previous work. But in my view, the whole point in making Chrono Cross was to make a new Chrono with the best available skills and technologies of today. I never had any intentions of just taking the system from Trigger and moving it onto the PlayStation console. That’s why I believe that Cross is Cross, and NOT Trigger 2.” - Masato Kato Myself, I like the intrigue of the storyline that keeps you guessing, and the game is bold in saying that Trigger’s view towards time travel as a universal panacea is naive at best, as when you read Lucca’s letter to Kid.

I didn't find arc rise fantasia to be an amazing game all around, but it definitely fills an extremely important hole that most jRPGs are lacking... the bosses in ARF are BALL BUSTERS like even with proper setup, gear, skill sets, and strategy they can wreck your shit so fast, and you have to plan ahead with the AP system or w/e it was called. Modern (post SNES) rpgs in general are far too easy, so it's always great when you have some that have hard content like ARF, Eternal Sonata (encore difficulty), DQ11 (super strong monsters mode) etc
@Evilriku134 жыл бұрын
Also the forgotten usage of the defend option in ARF lets me appreciate this game with its tons of evergreens too!

It’s always cool to get your opinions on games since you seem to have no limit to what you’ve played. Personally I’m not a fan of first person shooters, MMORPGs, and fighting games; but whatever floats the gamer’s proverbial boat. My most recent surprises are the N64 Castlevania titles and Quest 64. I didn’t own the console as a kid and still have fun playing them.
