I completely understand this one, especially the part about media representation. To these I'd add another though, the way we Brits demonise youth. It pervades our society, and is responsible for so much social damage. In the minds of those of a particularly gammon-faced or Karenish persuasion, young people do parkour, therefore they must be up to no good.

So I coach parkour, and when ppl ask and quere about its effectiveness as a sport, I class it as a functional fitness, through an environment, but also teaching the wee yins, it's play.

The naming game created an ugly rift in the community right from the beginning. Parkour comes from the french word for obstacle course, parcours, which David Belle used in honor of his father Raymond Belle who had a military background, and was a firefighter with a love for obstacle courses. These were developed by Georges Herbert in the french military, who again used the term Natural movement for his system. The others in the original group were less interested in the military angle, did not agree that their training was all the work of Raymond Belle and came up with the name Yamakazi for themselves, meaning strong in spirit, strong in body, using other names such as the Art of Movement, to describe their training - reflecting a more philosophical and artistic approach. The first few years the Yamakazi became a household name in France. However eventually a string of news features on David Belle introduced us to the new name parkour with a K, which was coined by a reporter to set it apart from the name for an obstacle course. Luckily, outside of France nobody gets the military connection. Personally I don’t care, I’ve been training these kinds of moves since the 1980s with no label, no group war, and all fun and play.
