Soyeon is a legend, seriously. This song is totally unlike any other kpop song - mentioning thick bodies and showing genuine confidence in themselves. Thank you for loving the girls!

So, apparently Soyeon got inspiration from two things for this come back. First, on a tv show she mentioned she first got the inspiration by looking at Yuqi performing. Yuqi is well known for being extremely self confident and a bluffing machine. And the second inspiration I read about is the movie "I feel pretty" from 2018 (the album is called 'I Feel'). Which is about a low self-steem plus-sized girl who hits her head and wakes up to seeing herself as a model, that gives a boost in her confidence, which in turn this causes people to start liking her more. She eventually realizes her body never changed, it was just how she thought of herself what changed.

So for Queencard, you'll notice there are many Y2K references in the fashions and overall aesthetic of the video. There are many references to popular media culture and tropes from that era. One trope used here is to have a "wild and crazy" episode that doesn't quite fit with the main story line (of Idle's career) but still delivers the message at the end. The message is that being a Queencard (Queenca in Korean is slang from the Y2K era that means "it girl" or "popular girl") is just about being confident in yourself. When the surgeon was applying anesthesia to Soyeon he said "when you wake up, you will be a queen" Then Soyeon has this drug induced dream/vision of what it will be like to be a popular/girl and wakes up to realize that she was always a queen... she just needs to believe it. So the trope is "it was all just a dream" (the song part of the video). Then she leaves the hospital and switches into her confident "stage persona Soyeon" and her beauty really shines. Then she gets the phone alert with likes and admirations for her instagram photo that looks like it came from the dream. Now our trope has been modified to the commonly used "it was all just a dream", "or was it"? In real life Soyeon is soft and introverted. On stage she is a savage. We often talk about her amazing duality. It's also important to note that when she was young, she was often rejected when trying to become and idol. She was told that although she was talented that she wasn't pretty enough to become an idol. Korea has some fairly insane standards as to what constitutes "beauty".

Fans of other groups go out of their way to ridicule Soyeon. She's a singular talent in the industry. Great stage presence, Great rapper, Great dancer, writes and produces music, and freedom to create. She really has no rival. Kpop fans are like sports fans. They will even seek out (G)I-dle content just to throw some hate her way. You just have to get used to hearing the hatred and learn to brush it off.

Actually, now that I think about it, the other members of (G)I-dle are probably Soyeon's closest rivals since they also write and produce.

There is big Y2K wave in fashion, pop and kpop music lately but G-Idle definitely nailed the concept ! And Soyeon lyrics are always amazing, truthful, very empowering, especially for women. I love both of the songs but Queencard is on repeat since it dropped, this song puts me in such a good mood !

Yuqi has multiple pronunciations to her name, actually. Korean would be either Oogi or Woogi and Chinese would be Yu-chi. You should check out her solo songs "Giant" and "Bonnie & Clyde". They're both really good! She also has a few covers as well. Keep up the awesome reactions, bud!

what I like about this comeback is, I feel like the song isn't trying to dictate what we have to do for ourselves. It's like they're saying "I can relate to your insecurities. I feel u". That's it. Especially in her rookie days, Soyeon was always called ugly especially in Pd101.

Great reaction . In my opinion .They are the best 4th girl group . They are the first 4th gen group that had been on ' killing voice ', and was the only one 4th gen group come on it. This is an honor! All the title tracks created by Soyeon . All songs which from the second mini album to this year's sixth mini album were main created by Soyeon,Minnie,Yuqi . From variety shows, and music live shows, we can intuitively feel the different characteristics and abilities of each member. Comprehensive Ability Ranking 1Soyeon 2Yuqi 2Minnie 4Miyeon 5Shuhua. Just my opinion

not going to lie, i was a little worried about how you would react to this song. i absolutely love it but i'm aware it's not quite up a metalhead's alley. i'm glad you gave it a chance and actually enjoyed it!! queencard is getting a lot of criticism for being silly and cringey. soyeon literally said she made the lyrics cringey on purpose to replicate a 2000s chick flick feel and people calling it cringey are just proving that she did what she set out to do. i'm absolutely aware that the song is not for everyone but dragging soyeon down is very weird for me. queencard is far from my favorite song of theirs (as much as i love it, i do, like many others, prefer the more meaningful lyrics soyeon is absolutely capable of putting out and nothing will top OMG for me-- at least for now) but i still love it like crazy. it's irritating for fans to put such pressure on soyeon and the rest of the girls to produce lyrically deep great song after great song and i'm glad they let go and had fun with this one. they deserve a break to perform a fun and silly song!! also, i'm not sure if you know this but soyeon purposefully kept their vocals unique. many idol vocal trainers usually set out to train female idols in the common voices you hear in other groups. soyeon did not want to lose this uniqueness so she got a different vocal trainer (i believe) who was just focused on improving technique instead of making them have that "idol tone." that's why soyeon, yuqi, and minnie (even shuhua-- miyeon is the most "classic idol" sounding in my opinion, but she still has a stunning voice) all have very unique voices.
@indiabindia5036

oh i also should add! even if the song itself is not someone's cup of tea, they still have to recognize that the song is breaking boundaries in kpop. it's pretty common to hear more sexual things in pop music in america but definitely not in south korea, which is still a fairly conservative country when it comes to that kind of stuff. i could probably count on one hand (exluding maybe blackpink) the amount of kpop songs that just outright say "boob" "butt" and "twerking". even if it can catch someone offguard with how blatantly obvious the lyrics are it's very important to know just how much gidle is pushing against stereotypes of "innocent femininity" that is so common amongst idols and is also breaking stereotypes that people, especially women, shouldn't talk about that stuff. i could also probably count on one hand the amount of times a kpop song has outright said "you're beautiful no matter your body type" (thin or thick girl). there's a lot of songs in kpop that spread the "love yourself" message, but this is the first time (i think) i've heard someone outright say "you don't have to be skinny to be gorgeous, just confident."

Soyeon is so insane as a producer. I think shes produced 60+ tracks for G-Idle and others. TOMBOY was inspired by Avril Lavigne and that style of music The entire I Feel album feels very early 2000s Hwaa was a song designed to ve be stunning in all her bandmates languages when it was translated (Thai, Korean and Chinese)

You are so right about their voices. Kpop groups differ in what they train to do. Some groups are trained for uniformity, like IZ*ONE. It is very hard to learn to recognise which one of the twelve girls is singing. Some encourage diversity, for example it is immediately obvious which of the four Blackpink girls you are hearing. But with (G)I-DLE it went further: Soyeon actively asked the members to stop taking vocal training classes. "When the members were taking typical vocal classes, explained Soyeon, everything was focused around high notes. However, the techniques they were taught to achieve those notes ended up taking away their unique and distinct vocal tones." She wanted individuality to be the main selling point of the group, and worked with each member to highlight their particular strengths. It is not just obvious who is singing in a (G)I-DLE song; even if you didn't know it was a (G)I-DLE song, you have a good chance to notice "oh, this it Yuqi!", "oh, I hear Minnie!" etc. This is even strengthened by Soyeon's creative process. While some other groups do have self-produced songs, the majority of Kpop songs is bought or contracted from songwriters, then adapted to the group, by rewriting lyrics into Korean, dividing the parts and such. Soyeon's songs fit members like they were made for them, because they literally are: she has the members' voices in mind as she writes the songs, and uses them strategically like instruments where they would have the best impact (e.g. Minnie almost always kicking the song off, or Miyeon having the pre-chorus). Also, notably, Yuqi had an illness when she was young, during which, according to her, is how her vocal cords got permanently damaged and what gave her her deep voice. She used to be teased about sounding like a man, and was very insecure about her voice, to the point she doubted she could ever become a singer. It was not until vocal trainers, and Soyeon in particular, showed her how gorgeous her tone can be that she fell in love with her voice. On pronunciation: Soyeon: kind of like "so yawn"; Yuqi: kind of like "woogie" (Yuqi is transliteration of her Chinese name, which sounds kind of like "you chee", but she only uses it when speaking Mandarin; in both Korean and English, she uses the Korean pronunciation, which would be transliterated as Ugi; to my knowledge, she has never once referred to herself as "you kee") The rest were fine. (G)I-DLE vs I-DLE: Complicated. tl;wr: Either is fine, but arguably I-DLE is more correct. Originally Soyeon wanted to just call them I-DLE in English, and 아이들 "aideul" in Korean. The korean name is very similar to 아이돌 "aidol" meaning idol, but literally means "children": "ai" is child, "-deul" is plural. This was to go with her desire to never grow old to become a boring adult, which is why they have a Peter Pan branding (including the fandom being called Neverland). In English, "I" is of course the first person pronoun, me, the epitome of individuality, Soyeon's ideal for (G)I-DLE; combined with the Korean plural, the intent was to communicate "six different individuals with unique charms, coming together as one to make something greater". This is reflected in their greeting: "I, hello, we are I-DLE"; for the first "I", they hold both thumbs up individually, but for the second, they put them together one against each other to kind of make a pillar ("strength together"). It also ties in to Soyeon's predebut "Idle Song" about a bored afternoon, though I don't know if Idle Song is a spoiler reference to the future group's name or if the name is a throwback reference to her older song. Their logo is the english letter "i" followed by the Korean 들 "deul" on its side (and I don't know if it is just me, or if it is intentional, but I can't shake the impression that it looks like "I WIN"). However, someone apparently noted that calling a group "children" is probably not the greatest marketing move ever: it's a nightmare for search optimisation, due to it being such a common term. Also, googling for "children" might be a bit... you know. Weird. So they slapped some parentheses in front: (여자)아이들 "(yeoja) aideul", meaning female children or girl children; and (G)I-DLE, with "G" standing for girl. Soyeon did not like it, it was not her idea, but at debut time, what you gonna do, eh? She didn't have the clout she has now. However, they never AFAIK introduced themselves as "yeoja aideul", always only "aideul". In English they kind of gave up and started using both, even though for a while during Tomboy promotions they made it a point to write ( )I-DLE, or even fade and cross out the G, because they found out that searching for "children" has begun putting them on the front page, and to drive home the Tomboy message that they are not good for a girl group, they are just good period, regardless of gender. In the end, whether you say (G)I-DLE or I-DLE, everyone will know who you mean, and as you said, the girls do use both; but the I-DLE reading is more in line with their intentions. Idols having tattoos is not really all that controversial any more. Anyone having tattoos is kind of controversial to an older generation, because in 20th century it was a sign of membership in gangs and criminal organisations. The echoes of this still linger: e.g. you can't go on TV with a visible tattoo (if they are not covered by clothing, a sticker would be used), and tattooing is mostly illegal (more specifically, it is legal only for those with a medical license, but after that effort you might as well be a doctor; so the majority of tattoo artists in South Korea work underground). However, a _lot_ of idols have tattoos, and I believe the sentiment is changing in younger generations. For example, your girl Chaeyoung of Twice has tons; so does Wheein of Mamamoo, a very highly respected artist; HyunA, a beloved idol, has like over two dozen?

If you liked Yuqi's deep voice I think you should also react to Jisoo's solo songs. Jisoo has a deep, husky, breathy voice which is also very unique and standing out, it's just not showcased so much in Blackpink songs, their producer can't work with her voice, that's why she gets less lines. React to her Yuki No Hana song cover, it's japanese song, then Camilla Cabello's Liar cover and Zed's Clarity cover. Those are perfect. Even her recent solo Flower doesn't do her justice, because, again, it was produced by Blackpink producers😔

Yeah they're referencing new jeans and contrasting hype boy with their tomboy. You got Miyeon's name right. Don't underestimate her she's main vocal for a reason. Check out Red Velvet, imo the best 3rd gen kpop girl group. Their discography and vocals are top tier. They don't write and produce like Idle but the sheer quality and volume of their content make them a must know in Kpop. Start with Bad Boy Psycho and Peek a Boo. As a metal head I recommend Purple Kiss "meme mem" And Aespa's "Girls" they're pretty metal in spirit.

What else could be said? You already said it all hahaha i agree 100% on all you said. They're the 1 in a billion. It needs to be said. There is sadly a lot of dumbasses trying to take them down with the most stupid and cringiest arguments. But i guess its understandable since they're afraid of their favs receiving less atention or who knows. But man... You have to be realy deaf, blind, and have no soul to no being able to apreciate all the art, literaly ART this girls has being pulling off. Before knowing about I-Dle i was also a kind of a metalhead hahah not that much tho, but a music lover and also im musician so... And kinda hated kpop you know. It was only a product for me and all that thing that ppl also thinks about kpop. But then i discovered them it was so diferent! They didn't have that plastic and overprocessed voices that sound almost like robotic-ai-something. It was just natural, raw, soulful, warm, voices... You can feel their pain, their strugles, their happy days, etc. It was like listening a human being for once. If it has any sence. I dk. The way they have embraced the place, the oportunity, the resources and the power that the industry has given to them to not just make money and go home or just get nice clothes and whatever, but to realy be full job ARTIST ... Its totaly comendable. I have nothing less than respect for them and my total support bc i know they put all they heart in everything they are doing. Nice reaction bro. I’m sure people have mentioned it, but this is kind of like an anti-Queencard. This is about insecurity, and then Queencard is basically if you act confident and pretty, you’ll be perceived confident and pretty. There is a bit of a background with Soyeon getting called ugly by viewers of a show she was in before GIDLE where they were basically saying “she’s talented but she can’t be an idol because she’s ugly” and a ton of comments about telling her to get plastic surgery. She apologized to voters on the show for not being pretty enough… this was when she was still underaged too. So sad. She definitely took that and said okay fuck you all, I’m going to write a song and get rich off you all buying it.

Unfortunately Cube Entertainment has a way of screwing their groups over in the end. I can only hope G- Idle can avoid this curse. I started in KPOP with Hyuna and 4Minute and still resent how things ended for them.
