A majority of the russian soilders are young, uneducated guys from far away small poor communities of Russia. They are the easiest one to hire on the short term contract the russians use for a majority of the millitary personell. Many of them are 'simple minds', more or less criminals in the first place, guys with personal problems, in need of money. In Russia, Ukrainians are historically looked as 'lower value', and the russians themselves the core, the elite, of the Soviet Union. The cruelty can be a mix of pure hate crime, guys getting a kick out of killing, covering up stealing stuff and other criminality, revenge for strong ukrainain resistance, envy seeing 'lower value people' living better (around Kiev) then what many of the Russian soilders are used to, or expected

This is like the 11 year old Ukrainian boy who went with his father back to their house near Kyov, and were stopped by the Russians. They murdered the father, shooting him in the heart and head, and tried to murder the boy, shooting him in the left forearm, and what they thought was his head when he fell on the ground. What saved the boy was his large hooded sweatshirt, which pulled up when he fell, the hood rising way above his head. They shot the hood as the boy lay quite still. They thought he was dead and walked away. But the boy waited, got up after they left, and ran. He survived, and is in Poland, thank God. He can witness at the Tribunals what the Russians did to unarmed citizens.

In early February 1940, at age 13, my Polish mother, with other family members was woken up at gunpoint in the middle of the night, told to pack a bag, escorted to the train station by Russian soldiers, packed into cattle cars and shipped to Siberia. Over a 2 month transit period, with little food or water they somehow survived their journey to then work in Russian slave camps. Thousands died on the trains including my grandfather. He was unceremoniously tossed out into the forest because trains did not stop. Hundreds of thousands died in the camps. Stalin was the Russian leader then, Putin is leader today. The brutal and inhumane practices of the Russian government and military have not changed in 80+ years.

A big part of the russian soilders are hired on short term contracts, and te regime makes sure the soilders are mostly from small towns far away Moscow or any bigger cities to keep prostest at a low level when many of these soilders never comes home. Naturally a lot of these young guys are 'simple minds' that sign on to these contracts, and many more or less poor and criminal people. Not much control. I remember a movie about the wars after the break up of Yugoslavia, about living in Sarajevo during the artillery and sniper siege. Sniper fire was a daily risk for people trying to get food or anyone trying to move around during that entire winter. They built walls using burned out buses to give residents some cover so they could cross streets, and so forth, without getting picked off by snipers. They know who they are shooting at.
