Whilst they've never been front and center there have been hints inside and even outside the show that Erin might subconsciously like James. In relation to outside they actually published an Erin's diary after Season 2 in which Erin casts James's celebrity crush to play herself in a movie. Of course one of the biggest hints in the actual show is back in 1x4 when Erin has her crush right in front of her and couldn't care less as she tries to stop James from getting with another girl. Essentially the showrunner has said that she's always had that pairing in her head it's just never been at the forefront because it's not what the show is a bout and didn't want it to overshadow other things.

I always thought that James had a little crush on Erin. Sometimes you can see him smiling at Erin in the background. Also if you’ve read ‘Erin’s diary’ that was published before season three, it kind of hints at Erin developing some attraction towards James. She does a love match quiz & her ideal match hints at James lol Plus her acknowledging that James was ‘sort of handsome’ in his Doctor Who scarf, & of course her letter to James (that she never gives him) when they thought he was leaving Derry at the end of season two. It’s a really fun read that’s canon to the show, & there’s an audiobook version which Erin’s actress reads.

omg I'll have to look up the audio version to hear her read it to me 🤣 I love that! there were moments for sure thinking back on it - I think I just didn't expect it because we had gone two seasons without anything of that nature between the friend group so I figured we were doing a platonic thing! but I'm here for it 🩶

Yeah there weren't really that many signs. The only small hints were Erin caring so much about James with Katya and also James picking Erin up for the prom

There’s WAY more hints than that. Especially if you read Erin’s Diary but even outside of that. It’s subtle but it is there!

Knew you'd love this and have fun with this episode. As explained in another comment Delorean cars were given UK Government money to set up factory in Northern Ireland as The Troubles were causing businesses to leave and new ones not replacing them, while there was a large highly skilled unemployed workforce as shipbuilding was ending. The cars went mainly unsold and John Delorean involved in a scandal and factory closed. What do you think the final episodes will have in store? Enjoy them can't wait to see
