I used to be a lot less skittish when I was younger. I explored a lot of abandoned places. (I went with friends, though). That place creeped me out a bit. Especially the "what are they trying to keep IN room). I'm glad you were safe, and thank you for sharing this place with us. All the best to you both.

Another, awesome video. Always good to see you back. I would have fought a buzz saw for my wife but I always told her if something happened, she could stay there and I'd run for help. She's been gone four years. It's crazy how things go in life. It's all in God's perfect time.

The door where the rock is, is probably a mechanical chase for plumbing and stuff and they don’t want anybody going to steal all the copper

This motel needs yo be fixed up like a hotel in Gilbert WV. It is booming due to the people that come in to ride OffRoad Vehicles (ORV). The mapping needs to be improved along with marking the trails really good on Black Mountain. My crew had a great time and stayed at River Bend Campground. We would’ve rather stayed at a Motel so we didn’t have to pull our campers so far, we were from the Indianapolis area and Central IL area. The money and jobs will come, give folks a place to unwind and ride from out of town. There isn’t much to do there or nice place to grab a beer and burger and let our hair down. I really liked Harlan and met some nice people, really enjoyed the mine tour.

I was in the band (Thunder Ridge) that played in the Kokomo club (later named Roadies) for several years there at Coal Town. All the people that left the club, usually went to the motel and wreaked havoc. Some of our bouncers worked double duty doing security work at the motel. People would destroy the rooms and leave them in a horrible mess. At least they were in rooms and not driving on the roads. Those that did would usually get stopped at check points below and above the Coal Town property. Lot of stories from those days. :)

Reminds me of the Motels that Holiday Inns had back in the sixties. Only difference is that they added a pitched roof to eliminate issues with the flat roofs the old buildings had.

The last review I found was Feb 2109. It was not nice. I did find a news story from 2016 about an explosive device found in a room and said plenty of syringes were found as well. Sad when struggling motels will let anyone stay there for cash. It just hastens the decline.

I enjoyed the video. There used to be a similar place called the King Koal Motel, but I don't think it's the one you filmed. King Koal was painted black (shinny, like coal) and had some abandoned foundation work started for the addition of a bar/restaurant (I think). There used to be a large mine, directly across the road (U.S. 119?) from the place. I guess the mine went broke, so the motel wasn't used enough to require additions. At first, I though this was the same place. I stayed at the King Koal one night. The motel rooms weren't carpeted - just a welcome type mat by the bed. Floors were tiled with an up-curved lip at the walls and floor drains. This was so they could hose out the rooms for the coal dust on the guests. This was about 30 years ago.

When the motel was built that was the only area of the county you could legally buy alcohol in so there were dance clubs, bars, and liquor stores. Now that the city of Harlan is wet and has two liquor stores and a couple of restaurants that serve alcohol and the population on that end of the county has decreased quite a bit there's just not a reason to go there.

This is called Coal Town. Used to be the Coal Town Motel. It’s not been closed that long. A couple years at most. It was mainly just people that came in town to do jobs, people between homes and for partying at the last. The liquor store was closed down years ago after protest and picket lines after a boy and girl were killed by a drunk driver on their prom night. This used to be half way decent place to stay. If you were young or from around the area you had to tell them you weren’t there to party or they would put you in the “party rooms” mainly the ones at the far end of the building. The rooms with no carpet and three legged tables, lol. Saw many a good parties there, some not so good too.

@@watchinglclowns9890 Housing the homeless is cheaper than the additional police work and free hospital visits. We're already paying the price. There's better ways to handle the homeless problem than telling 2% of the US population tough luck it's your problem, then paying a much higher cost afterwards. Many countries have no homeless. The US is still the richest country in the world. Think about it. Providing minimal housing will also have a small competitive effect on the housing market which is extremely high. Here's another one for you. About 40% of the homeless have jobs, some full time.

@guyoconnor6153 "another factor"? Drug use and abuse start in the home, and then they become homeless. They don't cohabitate very well on the streets, so putting them all together in a place like this is a recipe for disaster. Look at the studies on housing projects and violence. I would have to move that rock if I was there. It would eat me up until I did not knowing what was behind that door lol

Now what was there to do in Cumberland Ky?

Basically party.. or buy alcohol. That was the only part of Harlan Co. that was wet (for alcohol sales). If you lived in the other parts of the county, like I did, you either drove the trek to Cumberland or went to your local bootlegger.. 😂. Now I think you can purchase alcohol in the city limits and maybe even other areas. I'm not sure exactly. I haven't lived in Harlan for quite some time now. But there used to be lots of bars & liquor stores in that corner of the county. That was the only "legal" place. 😂

@@angieblanton1698 OR the Long trek to the state line 😂 I actually miss Living in Harlan. I fell in love with that area, and sure wished I didn't have move. Who knows. Maybe I'll move back some day. #Retirement

Now its going to be killing me, what's behind that door, but I'd have to think its the utility room, and they probably don't want anyone getting electrocuted or turning the breakers back on for the rooms!

I wonder how much it would cost to renovate and house people like Vets etc. Use the Licquer store for a store, cafe, and such.

There is nothing in this town for Veterans to do. I live here and am a veteran. The renovation would cost a fortune.

@@johngluck6938 Thanks for letting us know. Would have to come up with a theme park or other means of entertainment/ employment to subsidize the project. But, honestly, there are SO many buildings that could be utilized if some $$ people would be willing to invest.
