I am only a hobby bladesmith and I have that same anvil from Vevor. It is just about as hard as my antique 157 lb Peter Write anvil. And I actually use it more than my Peter Write now. I did some work to it though. Knocked off the sharp edges off and ground a couple edges with a radius. Also cleaned off the whole thing paint and all with a flap disk. I welded up around the Pritchel hole to bring it up to the top surface to make it more usable. I am quite happy with it.

I ordered an identical anvil from Vevor and the one they sent you looks much nicer than mine. Mine is much rougher, especially the square and round holes.

I bought recently a "water" distiller from there, in the Netherlands. And shipping was quick. The product is exactly what I expected. It's a decent product. It works fine. The build quality is half decent. All in all for that price. unbeatable. I would say, you can safely give a VEVOR product a go. But use some common sense in your expectations.

From someone who tinkers in the blacksmithing realm you'll wanna take an angle grinder and clean the paint off the horn and radius the edges of the face of the anvil. If your corners are too sharp, they can end up cutting into your material where you want it to bend. Some folks will make a tapering radius along the length of the face so it goes from sharp to more rounded the further you go down or put different radius on each side. These really aren't bad anvils especially for the price point.

Dude you are awesome at grinding. As a blacksmith I'd give you a 3 our of 10, you didn't set the shop on fire. Use those welding skills to make a stand for it. That will make using it easier. A36 is .26% carbon, you aren't hardening it. That was a knife shaped object and damn good one at that. O1 is .9% carbon for a frame of reference. Any anvil you hit directly with a hammer is going to end up with apprentice marks.
@michaelanderson3771 Жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct in the Anvil having been sand cast and the Cast iron mix os iron Carbon and other additive seem to give it a good level of Rockwell hardness. My Guess is that the top surface was ground flat using a grinding table. So long as the cast is not too brittle or has porosity this should last quite a while.

I've actually bought a vevor multiprocess welder and love it. Especially for the money. They are a very nice intermediate or skilled hobbyists level stuff in my opinion.

Great knife like attempt. The anvil on its face isn't bad, especially for the price. It sounds great which is important.

I was looking to buy a anvil from vevor already but I was going to get the 60lb anvil. I am glad I saw this video before I made my purchase. It looks like I will be getting the 132lb anvil instead. I was contemplating on a harbor freight anvil as well but vevor was my top choice.

All I can say is hearing protection. I already have mild tinnitus after working in a machine shop for 2 years. That high pitched ring will easily damage your ears. From what I understand that ring is also why blacksmiths chain down their anvils. The chains being a bunch of separate pieces each absorb a bit of the ring and help deaden the sound.
@benpowitzky48202 жыл бұрын
That is some useful advice about the chains. I wondered why I saw chains around the bottom of anvils. I think I will try it out for myself. Hopefully it'll work out for me too.

I have bought gate openers and recirculation water pumps from Vevor. Their prices beat anything else on the web.

Good stuff Tay. I bought a 12 ton puller from Vevor that worked like a champ. For your first attempt at a knife, you did better than most would have!

Tay, when the surface gets too bad leaves marks in your pieces, after you mill them out numerous times, I've seen people put on a thick higher quality hard steel veneer to replace the milled off metal.
@JohnWheels2 жыл бұрын
I have the smaller version of one of those anvils and the round hole is hard to use with that step. So, I built up a lot of weld around it to ramp it up to the main face so you can actually use the round hole. You'll probably want to preheat to around 400 before welding but you can use regular mig wire since its cast steel. Also, I gave the horn a nice grind for a couple minutes with a hard rock and then flap disk which will really help.
@cferguson33682 жыл бұрын
Interesting...old high quality cast iron pans also ring; damaged old cast iron pans, also, have dull sound. Sometimes, it's hard to see a crack, so the ring let's you know if it's intact. Or you see a crack, but you aren't sure if the crack is fully separated.... the sound lets you know.

i assume that vevor is a more direct link to the chinese manufacturers that other companies buy and rebrand for western markets, ive bought stuff from them that is almost certainly made in the same factories as reasonable brands

Dude, wrap some chain around the base or slap a big magnet on the side to reduce that ring. In the meantime, wear hearing protection or that ringing will be permanent, (tinitus.) Also, mount it on a wood base. It should serve you the rest of your life.

Considering the cost of a 'good' anvil and rarity of an affordable used 'good' anvil, this one seems like a reasonable compromise. I was surprised to hear the ring of the face, showing that at least to some depth, there is an acceptable hardness to it. Grinding is good too - I do that a lot.
@toadman506 Жыл бұрын
These Anvils from Vevor, the ones on Amazon, and now even Harbor Freight have one are cast Steel, not the Cast-Iron of the old HF anvil that he has. they're significanly cheaper than even a Light Fattier's Anvil from some of the supply houses out thee for Blacksmith and farrier tools. It's really a huge diference and makes getting into the Hobby a lot more reasonable
@marcruel94012 жыл бұрын
I think if you wrap a chain around the base it will stop some of the ringing
@davidcollins8993 Жыл бұрын
It looks like styrofoam as they used the “Lost Foam” casting technique. You make a styrofoam version of the part you want to make. Hot glue some styrofoam strips for runners, put it in a box and add sand. Then you pour your molten steel. It’s a high quality casting technique.
