Ever since they stuck with the idea that noone likes to wait for other people's turns they have been trying new things to avoid exactly that. And here we are in 2017 still having this conversation. I dont remember anyone really complaining about waiting for their turn because that's how board games work anyway.

Mario Party has always felt disconnected from other Mario games and rightfully so, it has juggled dev teams. I feel that the Mario Kart team should handle Mario Party moving forward. Dunno just a thought. Or maybe the Splatoon / ARMS team who clearly know what it takes to make a good multiplayer experience.

The recent Paper Mario games are a great example of Nintendo just refusing to go back to what worked about that franchise. Like for real, if they just made one that was like Thousand Year Door again, it'd be so popular, but once again, their need for "innovation" is completely blinding them. Not saying that's a bad thing, after all, we did get Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey out of that innovation but still, sometimes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

They kind of made Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Samus Returns by going back to basics and applying a modern twist on them. It's a bit different than the usual make things wildly different from the last game approach. More reigned in. But yeah Paper Mario is the way it is now due to Intelligent Systems experimenting with the series due to Mario and Luigi existing and being Mario rpgs by some of the original staff from Super Mario RPG. It's redundant to have two Mario rpg series that play similarly, that's the logic they're using.

The reason why PB got more coins than Rosalina is because he was the one who picked the minigame balloon. When you are the one who gets the balloon, you receive a 5 coin Bonus This is similar to the captain mechanic in MP9

I was fine with 9, cause I was like "ok, this is fine for one game, they had their fun experiment." then 10 came out and i was like "why can't this car silliness be its own side thing. Maybe make it so you have to play it to unlock ONE character if they love the car so much, but I just want my normal board game." What I'm trying to say is, I was fine with them trying out an entire game with the car but I don't want the rest of Mario Party to be like that.

It looks like whoever has it gets double the amount of coins they would normally receive from the mini game. I guess it's to keep players who come in last place from being out of the game, but it gives the person who's in first place too much of a boost if they have it, in my opinion.

To top Jeff's explanation on how they never move back. They do though. Mario Oddyssey went back to N64 style to move forward. Breath of the Wild was made to be like the original in terms of freedom, went back to move forward. Why don't they do that with Mario Party? That's not how ownership works, though. Nintendo can design a game any way they want. All the Mario characters and associated items are owned by Nintendo. And if they really couldn't use the name "Reverse Mushroom," they can just call it the backwards mushroom. Play style is not possible to own; if you could, Nintendo could claim that Super Mario Bros gives them ownership of every platformer, which is simply not true. You can't own the way a game is played. Mario Party 3 was developed by Hudson, which folded into Konami, it's true. But all they own is the specific title "Mario Party Three." Hell, Hudson never owned those games! Nintendo paid them to make them for them. If they were individually created titles, you'd at least be partially correct, but they are and have always been owned by Nintendo. You can look it up. Developed does not mean owned.

If there's one thing Nintendo *can't* be accused of, at least historically, it's trying too hard to innovate. Prior to these recent releases, Mario and Zelda had been in holding patterns for decades. With Mario party, like those other franchises, the problem isn't that they keep attempting something new, it's that the changes are poorly thought-out and arbitrary because they are struggling to understand what made the previous games good in a way that can be reimagined and built upon in new ways. Since this game was presented as something that reveled in what the series once was rather than striking out to do something original, I can see why you'd be upset, but that's not to say that the original formula for Mario Party couldn't be improved upon (it's just that the new games fail to do that).

Just to let the revisitors know, this game and every Mario Party from 9 onwards were developed by NDCube, a subsidiary of Nintendo. From what I've seen and played, they like to offer a lot of "false content", in that the menu displays what looks like plenty to select and play, but once you get into the meat of the game, it comes off as shallow. Even Wii Party despite it being our household go-to party game has this issue but it's not that bad, plus the modes on offer are genuinely fun if a little short. They're also responsible for making Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, but they've also recently put out the two Switch Mario Party games, so at least they're learning with each game.

8 is fun and good, it was the last game with classic boards and some enjoyable game play and classic Mario party bullshit. Feel no shame in liking it, I love it (not my favourite but still a game I play when I cbf setting up the 64). Everything past it is the worst (except advance because that came before it).

Birdo, Dry Bones, Rosalina, Toad and Toadette) and one board from every game (9 and 10 can be shorter and like the one in 7 and 8 where you follow a path to the end to buy a star there and the best minigames

Honeycomb Havoc is in this? Man that was one of the absolute worst of MP2, almost any other game from the N64 trilogy would of been better except the control stick spinning ones. It doesn't have classic mode though? It has the shitty car mode, Bowser Party (which is fun at first, but then you realize it has a tiny minigame selection and gets repetitive quick.) And the Amiibo mode, which is the classic formula... Without the fun boards or items or anything that made the classic games fun.

There's a reason this game feels like Amiibo Festival. Mario Party was originally developed by Hudson Soft. But when Mario Party 9 was being made, it was given to ND Cube. Later, ND Cube would make Amiibo Festival.

Yeah I know exactly what you guys are talking about! They did the same thing with the Paper Mario series! They started to get experimental with Super Paper Mario, which was okay because it still had a great story and memorable moments just like the two games before it! But now the series just sucks and it's really sad. The fact that Nintendo has done this to not one, but 2 beloved Mario side series is just really sad. It almost makes you think they're trying to get rid of Mario, but then they release stuff like Odyssey and you're just left confused. Like what are you doing Nintendo? Are you trying to get rid of the series or trying to make it better? Because if you're trying to make it better, you should probably start with the broken stuff. I just don't understand why they felt they needed to mess with the formula of these series? Why fix something that wasn't broken?

King of Salt this one may have been more of a legal issue then a bad choice. The original makers of Mario party 1-8 were Hudson as per deal with Nintendo while Nintendo owned the title Mario party, the characters and the mini games, Hudson owned the board game concept that Mario party 1-8 loved using including item usage and the idea of going around the board multiple times,this is evident by the fact that Hudson also made sonic suffle, a game that is incredibly similar to classic Mario party. This was not a problem till Hudson went out of business and may of there patents including the one about the board system of classic Mario party were bought by kanomi. In other words in order to make another classic Mario party game they would basically need kanamis permission.

Gil S. Because the company that did the older MP games has been bought. Maybe it's not even their fault if they have to try new stuff for Mario Party because they can't ask the compsny that helped them making the games. It could be the same case as Geno not being able to make a return in other Nintendo games cause the character is actually Square Enix's character. Maybe in their contract with Hudson, Hudson had the right to the Mario Party formula and they cannot use it anymore since their contract is broken.

my experience with mario party is that I started with 8, and saying it was the first one i've played I didn't have anything to compare it to (I was probably 7 or 8 y/o when it came out) But I played 9 and 10 and I found them to be quite bad. I ended up playing 6 and 3 and I thought they were great. and looking back on it now, 8's minigames were pretty bad but I don't think the game itself is terrible. but 9 and 10? dear god.

Meme Injector As a Zelda game it doesn’t feel good to me. As a game on it’s own it still feels boring, and mechanically needs polished, and like it needs more content considering the amount of area it lets you explore. :/ For example a bigger variety of enemies, and bigger variety of new weapons, and maybe figure out a way to make half of the useless korok seeds actually useful. Btw to reiterate on a prev comment with mechanic issues...both the rain and rag doll physics can be such a pain. Just wanted to throw that in.

*Ideal Mario Party Game:* 1. Multiple Boards with some variety (underwater, snow, haunted house, etc) 2. Everybody moves separately (not in a car, each player chooses their own path) 3. Minigame after each player has moved (end of each turn) 4. Make it competitive (only reward the winner of a game, don't hand out free stars, etc) 5. A good selection of fun minigames (including some classics, as well as new ones) It's not that hard, just go back to basics and keep it simple.

Honestly, to serve the whole nostalgia angle playing old Mario Party minigames that they were going for, they should have revived some of the best older boards from previous Mario Party games and let the game flow like normal.
