I guess everyone is free to interpret any song however they wish, but that was nowhere close to the intent. It's about the idea of an unmet soulmate somewhere in the world. It is also, as the Johns so often do, tinged with a hint of disaster if they HAD met, in the form of words painted on a bridge (between universes? The same as what barely comes through on tangled wires?) that might have arisen in a contentious divorce.
