fun fact about the taxidermy lion. It looks like that because the people that taxidermied it had never seen a lion before, so they based it on then current artwork of lions. If you compare it to some of that artwork it's actually pretty accurate. Especially compared to asian artwork of lions

A note to everyone whom it may concern. Never put water on a burning pot with cooking oil. The oil rises to the top of the water, bringing the fire with it. I'm pretty sure the best technique is to put a wet/damp towel over the pot or pan.

Remember George, during a grease fire it is best to NOT use water If it's a small grease fire (frying pan or pot) cover it with a lid, fire cannot exist without air. If it's huge, use a fire extinguisher!

There's a few things you can do for oil/grease fires, here are the top two: 1. Smother it. You can put a lid/cookie sheet over it to cut off oxygen, you can dump salt on it, you can dump baking soda on it, there's some other things but those are some of the most common household items you can use to put it out (sand and dirt also work if you're outside) 2. Fire extinguisher. Just. Use a fire extinguisher suitable for oil fires.

Yeah. The thing about water is that when it turns to steam it increases in volume by 1600x. So if you throw water into a grease fire, especially with a tub of grease way over boiling point, the water rapidly boils and throws oil into the air. The oil, now with a much higher surface area, burns much faster, creating a giant fireball, and spattering everything in flaming several hundred degree oil. In less known related news, this also means water is an efficient way to store oxygen, especially since water is about 89% oxygen by mass. The ISS uses water for this purpose, electrolyzing the water to get the oxygen. Roughly speaking, a liter of water contains enough oxygen for a person for a day.

The reason why you never ever use water on a grease fire is the following. If you pour the water intot he burning grease / oil, the water sinks below the surface of the oil, remember, oil floats on top of water. So you now have water inside a container of oil hot enough that it burns on the surface. So, the water nearly insantly vaporizes. And water vapor / steam of course has a heck ton more volume, so it explodes in all directions, turning the oil into a fine mist, which then catches fire as well, because we are stil dealing with a grease fire here.
