Saw them 64 times over the course of their career. I'm literally alive because of them. When I was 18 I was going to end my life. I was laying in my bed with a gun when I looked at my stereo and saw my Presto CD. I'm a drummer so I thought I'd play along with Neil one last time. Ended up playing Rush tracks for three hours and then fell asleep on the stairs heading back up to my room. Woke up the next day and gave life another try.

Yes, very well stated. Pink Floyd is a treasure, but I really wonder about how they could write the lyrics to "Time". Staying home doing nothing but lying in the sunshine and then watching the rain, killing time, etc. Who has the luxury of identifying with such lyrics? A child? A member of the idle rich living off a trust fund? Whereas the lyrics to "Time Stand Still" ring true and glow like burning coal. Most people have far too many problems to solve and struggles to endure, it seems like we can't catch our breath sometimes. Meanwhile time and life slip away through our fingers and we lose touch with things that used to give us joy and meaning and respite from our problems. "I turn my back to the wind To catch my breath Before I start off again Driven on without a moment to spend To pass an evening with a drink and a friend"

Neil's acceptance speech for the Canadian Music Hall of Fame back in 1994 was absolutely perfect. "We are honored tonight by the Canadian music industry and to us this industry includes the drivers who carry us through darkness and bad weather to the next show. The guys on the crew who set it up and tear it down. The record company rep who gets our song on the radio or the fan who introduces a friend to our music for the first time. They're all part of this industry, we may provide the music but they provide the audience. We bow for the applause but this industry brings all those hands together. Nietzsche said 'without music, life would be a mistake', music without an audience can be a sad thing too. What is more unnerving for us, is that without music we would have to get a life and without an audience we would have to get a job."

Adam what a wonderful homage to Rush! My brothers high school girlfriend bought him Moving Pictures. I had been playing drums for about two years at that time. My brother said "you should listen to this drummer". Well it was life changing. Not only did I connect with the music and Geddy's vocals, but Neil was playing things I had never heard before. Speed, precision, the creative drum beats, and the incredible sound of the drums. Then I learned he wrote the lyrics. I spent countless hours learning to play along with what I heard. Rush is my favorite band. There are so many incredible bands, but without Rush there would be a void that was never filled. Incredibly fortunate for us Rush fans that those three stellar musicians got together.

Moving pictures was the first cassette I bought because I heard one song on the radio and became obsessed with it. That song was Tom Sawyer. I had to hear it a few times before I found the band name, then went out and bought it, damn near wore off the Iron oxide from the plastic on that tape. It was also one of the first CDs I bought when I got my first player in the mid 80s when I got my first job. I still have it. Of course it's since been ripped into MP3s on my computer and phone.

A band i greatly respect but can't quite gel with somehow ? Whether it's the frenetic tempo changes or just that i never heard anything to rival their masterpiece 'Spirit of Radio' or even possibly Geddy's over shrill vocal style... is a source of frustration to a muso as me ? Maybe it's because Yes and Genesis set too high a mark that can't be rivalled but i'll continue to find a way into the Rush inner sanctum by hook or by crook.

I would say this is among Alex's finest solos, right up there with Spirit of Radio, The Pass and arguably his best, The Analog Kid. I know I will always be fortunate to have seen Rush live 10 times, and what always impressed me about them is that even at the latter part of their career, Rush never phoned it in - they put on a three hour show and left it all on the stage. I first heard Rush in the 70's as a young kid. Fly by Night, Working Man, 2112, and Closer to the Heart got me hooked. But it was definitely Limelight and the whole Moving Pictures album that made me a life long fan. Subdivisions (Signals album) came out a year after I graduated High School and I immediately identified with it. A few years later when I was in the working world the song "Time Stand Still" literally changed my life. The lyrics/words of Neil Peart helped me through one of the roughest times of my life. For so many of us these 3 guys wrote the soundtrack of our lives. The Professor will be sorely missed. Good thing we still have Alex and Geddy. I remember a DJ from one of the radio stations in my city was talking with Geddie and Alex, asked them a few general interest questions about the band and then asked "What is your greatest hit?" It got quiet for a few seconds, and Geddie replied sort of puzzled sounding "Well... We don't have any hits." That kind of sums up Rush.... They were never chasing "hits". Years ago, if you listened to Rush, you felt you were part of this "secret club" if you found someone else that liked Rush also...
@b.g.5869
@b.g.5869 Жыл бұрын
I'm a big Rush fan but I definitely think they did want to have "hits"; this is particularly evident in the 80s through early 90s following the Moving Pictures album. Not just from the obvious transition to a much softer and more radio friendly musical style but also in the sort of people they tried very hard to produce their records. At one point in the mid 80s they were trying to get the producers of acts like Simple Minds, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and even Tina Turner to produce for them. You don't do that unless you're gunning for hits. It didn't pan out because writing pop music was never their forte. I think it's also evident in the early 90s when they made an awkward attempt to appeal to the grunge crowd for several years. I still consider them one of the best bands of all time, even though I don't think they did anything essential again after Moving Pictures. They always put on a great live show though.

@@b.g.5869- I disagree. Having attended Neil’s first drum clinic and listening to him expound on their music and their approach for nearly three hours, as well as having listened to numerous interviews of all of them, I don’t think they were ever striving for hits. I do think they were experimenting with different sounds and styles, and part of that was working with people who we’re producing then contemporary acts to continue their growth and evolution, but hits - no, they were quite aware of who they were and the niche they fit into (and hunting for hits wasn’t really it).
@b.g.5869
@b.g.5869 Жыл бұрын
@bradcrosier1332 All of the drum clinics are available to view online, including the first one. I respect your opinion and think it's awesome that you were able to attend his first drum clinic, but I have access to all of the information you referred to and my opinion remains unchanged. I am convinced that by the mid 80s they wanted the sort of 'validation' that having some hits would provide. They had pretty much achieved all they had hoped for and more by the time the Signals sessions began and I think it's pretty obvious both from what those sessions produced and from what Terry Brown and Alex and Geddy have said that they wanted to have hits. They parted ways with Brown after Signals precisely over this, and I think the band saw the sort of top 40 success that 70s prog bands like Genesis and Yes had achieved after transforming their sound to appeal to 80s Top 40 radio as something to aspire to. Alex essentially said as much in contemporary interviews. In any event we can agree to disagree.

The one and only time I saw Rush was on the Clockwork Angels tour in Denver with my now fiancé. He knew I had been longing to see Rush for years and never had the chance. On that fateful night in Denver, Rush opened with one of my favorite songs-- Subdivisions. My fiancé told me the times he had seen Rush perform, they never opened with that song. I was meant to be at that show that night to hear one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite bands. To this day when my fiancé talks about taking me to see Rush, he always mentions how he kept looking at me that night watching them perform Subdivions and the big smile on my face. I was introduced to Rush just before Moving Pictures was released, and was blown away. When I listened to "Limelight" the line that struck me was one you mentioned, "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." I had gone to a lot of concerts before then, and all you want to do is be buddies with your favorite artist. You feel a connection with them through their music, a kinship. But those lyrics pulled me back and made me think - thousands of strangers who connect with your music, cannot be long awaited friends. The lyrics to that song so perfedtly express the truth of what it means to be popular - whether a sports star, a famous writer, musician, or actor, or being popular in school. The dynamic is the same, as well as the cost of becoming popular - for many it's the "universal dream". Thanks again for another great analysis Prof. Roger

While the instrumental virtuosity of each member was undeniable, it was the lyrics of Rush that really elevated and distinguished them for me. They played so many RUSH songs, and even obscure ones at that. I took music lessons from age 3, and RUSH became one of my favorite artists to listen to and emulate. Their music composition is akin to Beethoven, Schubert, Rachmaninoff and Mozart of their time. Their music will live on and be appreciated for not only decades, but centuries while the pop, rock, and hip hop of today will be forgotten and buried just as it is a mere 6 months after making the charts. RUSH fans are zealous lovers of music, and not groupies or fans but fanatics of the music itself.. The music transcends the band. Thankyou RUSH. Rush's music changed my life. But before it did that, it actually saved my life. Growing up with an alcoholic father who was very violent, it for me came to a head where I felt life wasnt worth living anymore. I considered taking my own life many times. However, the first time I heard their music ( Working Man, I was12), I felt that this was something worth living for, the feeling induced inside me from their music. By the the time I was 14 I was well on my way to being an accomplished drummer and singer, was drawing as well as any art teacher i had in school, and stopped my father with force as he tried to assault my mother again. I then warned him never to lay a hand on her, myself, older brother and sister ever again or he would answer to me in much greater fashion. He packed and was gone by the next morning. My Mother quietly confided to some family and friends through out her life that my actions then likely saved all of our lives, including his. Yes, the psychological power of art is that powerful. Thats what I was given through the music of Rush. Thank you gentlemen for such an immense gift! Rip Mr. Peart.

It was the most amazing thing, because their music was awesome. I loved every track. Being an introvert, I always identified with the "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" line. Along the same time, my dad had given me a bass guitar he'd had for years, and I beat my head against Geddy Lee's basslines until I could form some approximation of his sounds. I shared a room with my older brother growing up. He had a cassette player that you could program as an alarm clock. Every morning I would be woken up by bands like Boston, U2, and of course, Rush. Thanks to him I have a great appreciation for these great bands.

I still remember sitting in my best friend's den listening to Moving Pictures when it first came out. "Tom Sawyer's" first punch on the record was something I'd never heard in my young life.... Then I started reading the lyrics. THEY CHANGED MY LIFE!!! By the time "Vital Signs" played, I was forever dedicated to Deviating From the NORM!!!! YES, RUSH IS MY FAVORITE BAND.

My early love of rock and roll is separated into two very distinct categories, BR/Before RUSH, and AR/After RUSH. I grew up in the ‘80s, graduated in ‘91, so I had ALL the best music. I was a metal head, and my best friend (a guy, a soccer player), introduced me to RUSH. My life changed that day…… I actually LEARNED from their music, it helped me so much in Mythology!! Still in my top 3 bands of all time! That’s over 30 years of staying power!! Neil’s drums and Gettys vocals stand the test of time!

Prior to 2020, I only ever felt sad at the death of one celebrity, Robin Williams. That was a sad day, but I still kind of shrugged and moved on, just feeling a bit down. In January of 2020, I legitimately cried like a baby for the first time in my 46 years of life, at the passing of a celebrity - Neil Peart. Even today, I get choked up still. I'm a guitarist, not a drummer, but that still hit me harder than news about members of my own family! And I realized, it was the attachment to and relationship through his lyrics that really, really made me a die hard fan for all these years. Neil's words touched parts of my emotions and thoughts that I never realized I had, some even saved me from the darker recesses of my brain getting a foothold: All of us get lost in the darkness; dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us spend time in the gutter; dreamers turn to look at the cars Better the pride that resides, in a citizen of the world Than the pride that divides, when a colorful rag is unfurled A spirit with a vision Is a dream with a mission Closed for my protection, open to your scorn Between these two directions, my heart is sometimes torn Sometimes our big splashes Are just ripples in the pool And probably from. The. Best. Love song. Ever written.............. I don't believe in the stars or the planets Or angels watching from above But I believe there's a ghost of a chance We can find someone to love And make it last

Coming up on the anniversary of the first show, which they opened for KISS, Dec.20th, 1975. Wow, the tours...A Farewell to Kings (2 nights in a row), Grace Under Pressure, Roll the Bones, Moving Pictures, Hold Your Fire, Clockwork Angel's,...I'm not even sure about all of them. If they played in Pittsburgh, I was there. They were the very first band I saw live, and the very last. Just an incredible trio of musicians. Thanks Professor.

Rush really stood out on their own. From the early hard rock of Working Man to the epic 2112 to the synth sounds of Moving Pictures to say, the minimalism of Presto from 1989 and beyond. They changed, but without ever selling out to make easy money, or resting the laurels of their past music. They always tried to make things that were artistically interesting and compelling.

I've been blessed to see Rush a few times live in concert, and every time it's been amazing. The thing about the band is, though, the more I listen to them, the deeper and more initiate their music and lyrics connect with me. It's not just their musicianship, it's not just their virtuosity, it's not just their lyrical genius, it's the ensemble of all of those things. It's the synergistic fusion of all of their talents and experiences that connects with me. Even the song Limelight resonates. Sure, precious few of us have experienced the stardom that Rush has, but most of us DO know what it's like to be a performer, a person that the audience doesn't truly know, whether that audience is friends, students we teach, colleagues we mentor, or strangers we perform before, it all resonates. While I certainly remember Tom Sawyer at the skating rink while playing Asteroids, no Rush song connected more intimately whit me than Subdivisions. It was that song that made me realize, "They get me. They are me." It was a ephemeral connection with nerdy stardom that empowered me. I picked up a bass because I loved Tom Sawyer, but even as a professor of Astronomy now late in my years, I still aspire to be a better musician because of the virtuosity and the authenticity of Rush. And yes, I play Cygnus X-1 to my students right before my lecture on black holes. :)

After I separated from active duty, I felt a bit lost. Leaving the Army was leaving behind a family with whom I shared adventures, heartache, and joy. Neil Pert's book "Ghost Rider" inspired me to take a month-long solitary road trip through the Appalachian Mountains. I rode when I wanted to ride. I ate cold food out of cans from the grocery store. I sometimes slept outside and sometimes in a hotel. After that journey, I found myself again. I understood Neil's line from the book, "The purpose of man is to live, not exist". RIP Neil.

I first saw them live in 1975 for their Caress of Steel Tour at Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio Texas. I was 13 years old at the time and STILL remember how blown away (and deaf) I was after that show. My ears rang for 3 days! The Necromancer became my all-time favorite RUSH song after that.

I grew up in LA and I was part of the LA punk skateboard scene in the early 80s. As Dave Grohl said in his induction speech, my older stoner cousins turned me on to them. I was 13 at the time and my First Album was All the Worlds A Stage. I will never forget it was a beautiful spring afternoon and the sound that came through those speakers. I was instantly hooked. I wanted to know everything about them. That same year my same cousins took me to see them on their Signals tour. I will never forget the energy there that night. I had to see them again, since then i got to see them about 25 times. While dating my now wife in 96, I took her to see Rush. In the middle of their set my wife says to me..3 guys make all that noise. Ha..almost left her there. My 3 kids have grown up and ive taken them to Rush concerts and happy but sad that we saw them as a family one last time in Phoenix..little did we know it would be. We all love Rush..thanks for the memories.
