My wife and I had a situation happen last week while in Vegas. Walking through the Belliago around the ballrooms in a large open hallway. A young man stood up from a chair and walked towards us. He was dressed in shorts and a tee but nice clothes and shoes. The give away was the super dark sunglasses and a ballcap pulled down low. I kept eyes locked on him as he passed and continued to watch. He walked about 50 ft past us and turned to follow then realized I was still watching him and spun around and headed the opposite direction. I told my wife to move her purse across her body and hang it between us to be less of a target. I this case I could have done little to defend due to recovering from surgery, but being situationally aware was our best deterent.

I was coming home one night and walking through my backyard when I heard something coming at me quickly from behind. I had a Derringer in my pocket and spun around with it in my hand and pointed it directly at the person coming at me. He stopped almost instantly. I'll never forget the look on his face. It was my neighbor trying to play a joke on me, he never did that again. This wasn't very long after I got out of the AF, I was an SP.

Situational awareness is really not about you being hyper aware of people places and things. It's about you reading your body and mind response to people places and events. Every cell in your body has its own brain and willingness to survive. And that uncomfortable anxious feeling you get in certain situations is your body telling you that danger is eminent. Watch cops and combat veterans. They walk and stop often. They are reading their environment. They tend to look around while talking to you. And they slow down and become deliberate in thought and deed. He is situationally aware. All the activities around you don't happen individually. It's all patterning. A rhythm. A tempo. Before I enter any place I always slow down. I breathe in deeply a couple times which alert my cells that I need to talk. Every cell in your body will key in on all the dangers and potential dangers and the people who may give you trouble. Most folks are going to be moving and talking at about the same rate and rhythm. This is the ebb and flow of the business. Except for the guy by the coffee machine. He stands out. So you look for the danger. Like his hands hidden under his jacket and so forth. All this is being sent to you by your body and mind. That's why you hear thugs and veterans and cops say they can smell a cop or some such. That they can put one out in a crowd. They come to rely on what their body and mind is tell him because your cells don't want to die. And that tugging on your awareness is your cells that are called Command Cells. Listen to them. While walking notice how all other animals frequently stop. Then start again. They are constantly soaking up information from their environment.

I've been in the Army, had hand-to-hand combat training (Jujitsu) so old habits die hard like prepared for anything at any given moment...keeping my head-on-a-swivel---constantly scanning my surroundings like a Cylon. I relly don't care what anyone may think or how I may look. I do carry a cell but rarely ever have my head down in it. Situational awareness is KEY never more so than the times we live in. This is getting worse and worse here too 9:53 . In Canada all the “protective gear” is highly regulated and it seems like the perps have more rights than the victims. I gave my teens coyote spray in their stocking last Xmas. Attach to keys and hold as walking to car.

Good points. I love that your wife interjected into the conversation role modeling sensible behavior. The thing with having a gun in your purse is that if it's just a snatch and grab robbery the purse is their target. So if they get the purse, they've got the pew-pew too. I like sharp pokey things. I also have an Outdoor Edge Para-Claw bracelet. If someone attacks me, I'm at least going to slice them up as much as I can. And I think I will start carrying a neck knife - but I think it has to be concealed (also making it harder to deploy) otherwise that's what an attacker is going to go for first. As a woman I can say that body language is also extremely important, as well as NO FEAR. Be prepared to kill an attacker, and walk like it. Even if you are only 100lbs. That alone will dissuade many would be attackers, because they will pick an easy target over someone who looks like they are going hurt them any time.

Situational awareness and cardio are my preference, because those Objects Which Must Not be Named (the Voldemort Array?) can be taken away, lost, or broken. They're good to have but not to rely on, just like phones, motion detecting lights, and car locks. Recognize a sketchy situation developing and be able to extricate yourself from it as quickly as possible.

When out walking the dog or walking to my vehicle, whether it is day or night, I always carry my heavy flashlight with a very sharp glass-break on it. It is always in my dominant hand with the glass-break pointing away from me. If attacked by human or animal they will have so many poked holes in them that they "should" retreat rather quickly. The added benefit of the heavy flashlight whopped across their head or up their groin could also help. The biggest helper is showing confidence when faced with a possible assailant. Any sign of weakness will attract them more.

Someone will get me one day, but if they catch me on the wrong day, they're getting a knife in the face, or keys in their eye.

At a bare minimum, your vehicle keys can be effective. You can interlace the keys between your fingers, use the alarm button on the fob. Have a small mace spray attached to your keys. They have panic buttons you can attach to keys that are hard to turn off.

i see people when they walk out of a building bury their face in the phone. never look around, just walk blindly to their car. then get into their without checking for anything suspicious. like money or a note, or anything that will distract you stuck under the windshield wiper. long enough for someone to surprise you. if you spot something like that, turn around and go back inside. but be aware of what is behind you. carry your keys with one sticking out like a spike. a ink pen can do some damage, or maybe a tactical pen or a bright flashlight that has an edge on the end on your keychain. always have something ready to protect yourself. i'm no expert, but i've lived where i always had a fixed blade in my hand just in case.

While moving or traveling thru a area it's best to keep your phone in your pocket and keep your head on a swivel. Ladies if you don't have a sharp poky thing just keep your longest key between your fingers while walking out to your car cause it's like a pew pew, unless it's at the ready and loaded it someone who runs up on you then your got. The only way to be ready in a situation like where he came running around the truck is to have it in hand. Not in you pocket or purse, if you think there could be a situation either get prepared or bail. I did 4yrs in the Corps, hand to hand training and years of room clearing just to get suckered punched when leaving a bar about 2 months after I got out. Guy hit me once then in hopes of me following him he ran out about 20ft in front of my truck. Little did he know I stopped to assess the situation and could see feet under the rolling trash dumpster next to him. He wanted me to chase him so his buddies could jump me and steal the truck. I got in the truck and left. Hurt my pride a little not being able to beat the snot out of him after getting punched but I lived to see another day and kept my truck. It's not always about physical action but being mentally aware. Keep your head on a swivel. 🍻🇺🇲

The only advantage of locking folder knife is you can have them on you on most occasions and it woudn't be inconvenient. Not sure if you said it and I missed but easy access without practice can end up just as bad as not having anything. In Canada we can be charged for using a sharp pointy thing for self defense. I carry a walking stick which I need to use from time to time due to my physical ability. I have also practice with it as to how I would defend myself. (weapon of opportunity). Are defense laws are ridiculous. Being aware though can keep you out of needing to use anything. Great video

I’m not bragging but you’d have been a shot ass.😂 Good video to make folks think. I never ever never ever never ever walk outside without my ccw and my small tactical flashlight. That’s rain shine snow sleet sun or darkness. But I have to make that conscious decision every time I go out. I don’t even walk to my safe rural mailbox without my pistol. Recently, this past week a lady I went to school with was attacked, 4 miles from my house by a black bear that chased her dog into her yard. Luckily she survived. A few years back one of my neighbors pit bull attacked my dog while I was at work and cost me hundreds, had I been home I would have found out which Cretan the dog belonged to. Danger ⚠️ is everywhere, not just in urban areas and not just people, if you can walk freely with your ccw or open carry then do it 100 percent of the time you leave your house.
