Love those cable cars I hope they never get rid of them

I grew up in Sunnyvale but I had never ridden the entire route of the cable cars. Finally at 61, I rode the whole loop a month ago. I love that they’re the only national monument in America that moves.

I lived in The Baghdad By The Bay for 30 years from 1975 to 2005 and spent 20 of those years on Union and Hyde in a tiny no-bedroom studio listening to the cable under the street. I watched the crews tear up Hyde street and was able to see into the street where the original cable had run. That track cable space had not seen daylight since it was created, they had used hollowed or halved Timber Logs to act as the travel way for the cable. I remember riding the Hyde street line to downtown to go to work, some places the tracks were so bad the car with sway pretty bad on a turn, so it was often necessary to tell an unwary tourist or someone new to The City to "...hold on NOW..." otherwise they would go flying.

Wow man! I lived at Hyde/ Pine from '90 to '99, across the street from the St. Francis Hospital. I had Cala Foods and a laundry there on the only two flat blocks of Hyde, one block south of where the Hyde cable car turned on to California. Or as I said, "one block north of The Tenderloin". Which nowadays seems a euphemism for The loin of dystopia.

Great Job👏🏻👏🏻 San Francisco just wouldn't be San Francisco without the cable cars. They're such a joy to ride. I hope they played Tony Bennett's song, "I left my Heart in San Francisco "during the ceremony. 🤗👍🏻

Awesome! I ride these cars every once in a while. As old fashioned as it seems when you ride these things. It's fun to imagine how advanced and amazing this technology must have seemed back when horses struggled to haul carriages up hills and things.

Dianne Feinstein did the dedication in 1974? She was AND STILL IS in high major restoration herself. SHE LOOKS ANCIENT IN 1974! How ironic she now being wheeled around not in a cable car but in a wheelchair and needs someone to cast her votes for her in DC. On a side note, I might add, the final statement of the budget in the last 10 seconds being not met while everyone celebrates is typical for SF politics.
