In the UK we race homing Pigeon , a peculiar sport I know . During the war , a homing pigeon saved an aircrews lives because they released it when they crashed into the water , and it flew back to it's home with a message tied to it's leg . The bird got " The Dickins Medal " for bravery . It's The Congressional Medal of Honour for animals .

The "one in the shop" is the classic "Four Candles" and was the sketch most associated with them. So much so, that at both of their funerals, four candles were used rather than the usual two. Their show on TV was a stunning success for 16 years. They are both British national treasures. Four of the Monty Python group wrote for The Two Ronnies show. Ronnie Barker was also brilliant in the situation comedies "Porridge" ( as Norman Stanley Fletcher, a lovable rogue petty criminal, the show is about life in a British prison) and "Open All Hours" ( about life in a small general store. Ronnie was Albert Arkwright, a penny pinching shop owner trying to make a profit any way he can). David Jason ("Only Fools And Horses") was also in both of these shows with Ronnie Barker, so check out some of the clips.

As good as the two Ronnie's are, there was no improvising when the duck quacked, it was a male duck,a drake,and drakes don't quack, so the quack in the sketch was scripted, but not taking anything away from the quality of the writing,and Ronnie Barker's delivery of the script, his comic timing was always impeccable 👍👍👍

As a Brit, I don't think Four Candles can be beaten, and I'm old enough to have watched them when they were first broadcast (and I never missed them). Some were rather risque by the standards of the time, but as they went out live they got away with it as they were so popular and they couldn't vet them first. Next up, Monty Python? Or Fawlty Towers?

Great that you’re reviewing British comedy, but an American comedian from the 1970’s was absolutely outstanding at the time. I only discovered him a few years ago (that’s the wonder of KZbin for you). His name was Foster Brooks and he was best known for roasting celebrities and American politicians at after dinner speeches whilst pretending to be drunk. Check out his probably most famous sketch with the singer Dean Martin in which he plays the part of a drunk airline pilot - absolute class!

I can't deny you try hard to understand the jokes, and for what you're watching, it's not easy, so I'll give you props for that alone. The Mastermind sketch (as an American, you wouldn't even know what Mastermind is), unless you have an amount of understanding of that period in British history, it's near impossible to understand (although if you do, it remains on of the greatest sketches of all time). Four Candles, is genius, but it's set in a time (and with an accent) which makes it difficult for the young generation... But you're trying. You're watching. and you're persisting. So HUGE props for that alone

It's like anything in life, the more you do the better you get. It's to be expected that you don't get all of the jokes, as you've not been brought up with the British humour. Equally if I watched some America culture stuff, i probably wouldn't get the more nuanced humour over there. There some stuff which travels across the pond, but the day to day living stuff, us British would be clueless. So yeah, the more.you watch the more you "get it". 👍

Hi there, you might like to check out the comedian Ken Dodd, he's of a similar generation to the two Ronnies. From Liverpool he learned his craft travelling the variety theatres. He was well known for his mad cap delivery and the fact thet his live shows were notorious for overunning. I was lukiy enough to catch his live shows twice, the jokes just come at you quickfire, one after the other. The Duck's back end was described here as a Teddy Boys haircut. Teddy Boys were rough types in the 1950's.Their hairstyles were swept back from the sides and looked like a Ducks A**e, a when viewed from the back
@replevideo60963 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they were rough. They were just young people wanting to be different by having their own style of clothing. Teddy boy suits were quite expensive so they were all working lads earning good money. They were frowned on by the older generation because they dressed differently. I remember being refused admission to a ballroom dancing school because the old owner thought I and my pal were yobs because of the way we dressed. We were wearing Italian style suits which we had bespoke tailored, slim Jim ties, and calf leather winkle picker shoes, similar style to the Beatles, but in his mind we were yobs.

@@replevideo6096 I seem to remember them being described as carrying flick knives. whether this was exaggerated in reporting,not sure.
@replevideo60963 жыл бұрын
@@steevenfrost I think the media demonised all youth movements like teddy boys, mods and rockers because the older generation which they belonged to, hated non conformity, just like that dance school proprietor. There was a step change in culture at that time between old attitudes and the new, known as the generation gap. I was both a mod and a rocker, and a lot of others were too, yet the media portrayed them as warring factions because of one weekend at Brighton. I turned up at the cafe on my motorbike in my leather jacket, and at the dance hall in my previously described mod suit. There were more girls to chat up at the dance hall and we mods were more popular with the girls than the guys barely one to two years older, who turned up in standard Burton's business suits just like their dad's.
@steevenfrost3 жыл бұрын
@@replevideo6096O f course we never get to hear that side of the story so it's ggood to have first hand accounts from you and others who actually lived through these times.
