It’s what I’ve been saying for years now: why cater to a small percentage of people in a knit community that won’t even go and watch the film, when you could cater to and earn millions of more dollars and notoriety from the larger majority of your audience: the fans of the franchise (Star Wars, lotr, etc) that have been loyal for decades! They’d make more money and get future customers by catering to the majority target audience, the fans. But instead, they’d rather make less money and ruin an IP, by catering to a small community of people that won’t see the film.

Lifelong Disney fan, worked there for 3 years - massive lifelong supporter….until the last few years. Their wokeness has become so flagrant and in your face, it’s turned me away from a company and brand that I have loved for so long. We now have a black little mermaid - why? What’s the point? Pat, I made my first Twitter comment ever on your Tweet about this movie, and boy oh boy, did it get some traffic, lol. I basically said that it was too bad we have to preview Disney movies now to see if there is any content in there with “alternative lifestyles,” and that didn’t set well with some. I didn’t get into going back and forth in the comment section, I just watched it play out, but I was having fun getting lots of notifications. I couldn’t believe how many times I got called a homophobe, bigot, I hate LGBTQs, no empathy, stupid, bad parent, etc. I’m not against gays, and I have talked about it with my children in a tolerant way, but it’s just not our jam when it comes to movies and shows. Kids know what’s what - you can see it on their faces when they see it - and I don’t need to tell them, No, sit there and watch it and like it, the way you are feeling creeped out is wrong. I would explain to them that some people are like that, and that is the way it is, but I’m not going to shove it down their throats. Sorry LGBTQ community, but it IS an alternative lifestyle in my household.

The situation isn’t so simple. Once the trend plays its self out these companies will shift. If they aren’t shifting, you can be sure the money is still there according to their analytics. They aren’t targeting just 1-2% in LGBTQetc. Since it’s an acceptance movement, they are also targeting anyone sympathetic with that movement; their friends, their family, Their community. Quickly that pumps up into a sizable consumer base. And one that is particularly devoted because they infer that you are pushing a righteous cause. As a white straight male person, you don’t go to movies expecting to see nothing but white straight male characters. Certainly a mixture of races, both sexes, and a gay here and there. Any less wound seen as or more juvenile and backwards as forcing and injecting minorities into films in an attempt at cultural overloading your society into submission.

It very much is the central problem, and its coming from the universities. This ideology started infiltrating American universities around 1972 and by 1992 the had pretty much all of them. Paulo Freire's book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" is a central piece in modern teachers colleges. Its a cultural cancer.

Great topic on this Pat. Hopefully you read this but I doubt it. So for the others that do... I learned this from a Marketing Professional in the industry and I was fascinated by what she said. The directed advertising you are now seeing for gays, blacks and trans is only for show. They obviously know that in the OLD way (old way being before streaming) there would be no way for a company to promote its products targeting the smallest audience. Times are different now and streaming has filled in the gap. You see, all the big media companies make a huge percentage now of their revenue from streaming. So much so that marketing on cable/prime time has very little affect and they know it. The whole purpose for the marketing now is to put on the show that Hollywood wants to see you put on and they do it cause they need to use the hollywood infrastructure. Like they say when you go on the backlot tour at universal studios..."everything is fake in hollywood". They can afford to go with this wokeness cause they get the remainder of the audience via streaming in which if you pay, there is no advertising. This way, they can still put that wokeness in a movie or show, but by the time you figure that out and turn it off, you paid. Quite simple actually. For the longest time I also could not figure out how these companies could last. Well, now you know. :)

This also goes for netflix. Troy fall of a city is a great example. They cast a black actor to play Achilles, when there was no reason too, and the show failed. Its a shame because Homers Illiad is one of the greatest stories of all time and could make a great tv show, but netflix cant see past their racial and sexuality quotas. Thats why HBO and AMC are so much better. I only keep netflix now for classic movies.

I was born in '78. Disney films used to be literally an EVENT, like a new Michael Jackson album/video. It was just a straightforward family oriented story with entertaining iconic characters and a great soundtrack. This shit nowadays for the last few years has been completely bollocks imo. 🇬🇧Just spent 14 days in Orlando for a Disney holiday, we’ve been visiting since 1989 and are not going again. It no longer caters for us. I also have a Disney + subscription and we are also find this is less relatable to us and I would think to the majority of their subscribers. If I was a baker and 1 of my customers liked an unusual muffin, I would not ignore the majority of my customers to cater for the 1. This is a recipe for disaster.

I’d argue any country can take Maverick and relate to it simply because the countries aren’t mentioned. Yes the main country is America. But their story could be anyone’s. It’s why movies like Bros fail. They only appeal to gay men. And clearly the audience for Bros was busy doing other things. So if they won’t go to movies specifically catered to them why would waste time catering to them when others are at the table looking to be fed.
