What's funny about all of this is how many people sincerely agree with Light's 'logic' here when it clearly isn't even meant to be good or reasonable - just emotionally compelling, because arbitrary insinuations and appeals to emotion are what Light is throwing against a legal system that is the product of several thousand years of people having ideas like Light's, trying them, and it going extremely badly. And this is literally in the song. Like...I'm not a big fan of the concept of cutting deals to avoid trial, but that's because almost every Legal Aid lawyer is so overworked that forcing their clients to cut deals regardless of their guilt is the only real option available. Not because the concept of plea deals is inherently corrupt, and when it is it's more likely to be a matter of individuals representing the State's side being corrupt to varying degrees. A state that he isn't holding accountable because he cut deals with various governments giving them blanket immunity in exchange for them not trying to find him. Like...the people talking about 2020 and wondering where the justice is...do you mean the continued murder of black kids by cops? Because a system where we just appoint someone to decide who is innocent and who is guilty without a trial and deliver instant death penalties, without Light's superpower of being smarter than anyone to ever live in our world and being able to perfectly determine who's innocent and who's guilty with no false positives, that would basically just mean tens of thousands of more dead black kids, because the person deciding every case would be Donald fucking Trump or something. Sure, if you can find a superhuman god emperor who genuinely does know better than all of us, absolutely let him enforce justice like the fucking Night Haunter if you want, but while we're limited to realistic human beings, the whole point of the systems we have is to serve as checks on any individual's power, because everyone thinks they know better and they're all wrong. Only systems which fundamentally leave no one happy can actually do anything to fix the fundamental flaws in how humanity works. We have a system that is based around the idea of punishing the innocent as infrequently as possible even if this means bad people escape punishment, because it very much is an either-or proposition unless you're a nascent god-king like Light Yagami, and if you *think* you are, that's when you become a problem someone else is going to have to deal with.

Light is right with how he feels, but there is a reason why the teacher calls his arguments simple. They are. "Just kill the problem" is the intuitive dictator's way. There are times to attack Versailles, and there are times to keep decorum. Most of the people light hates are the result of the same system he hates, not just the perpetrators. He is not changing the system, he is just killing the inconvenient part of its victims. He is treating the symptom to fulfill his ego trip. Like any teenager with "the ultimate weapon" would. Light is an interesting character. A good character - he is not a good person. Or that smart.

I disagree to be honest. I thought Light was supposed to be composed and kind of kept his views to himself. Never would I think of him arguing with his teacher and kind of losing his cool over it. Also, all of the students are singing along telling their views and agreeing with Light, but in the anime there was a scene with Light and Ryuk talking about how humans would always claim the morally right decision of "no one can kill or decides what to do with criminals by themselves" yet would agree but in secret, the opposite of what this song presents. I'm not a fan of the musical because I think one of the main concepts of the manga and anime is that some things aren't necessarily left for our "interpretation" but aren't said directly or mentioned very quickly. By adding songs, that takes away that factor which personally for me makes the original story so amazing. I do however like the songs, just not the musical.

Typically villains have what’s called an “I am” song, and heroes have an “I want” song. (For example, In the movie _Beauty and the Beast_, the villain Gaston has a song about how he is great. Belle has a song about how she wants something new in her life.) In this song, Light, our villain, has an “I want” song about how he wants the laws to be fair. The teacher simultaneously has an “I am” or in this case “it is” part in the song. That totally flips the script on who is the hero and who is the villain in this musical and they did it all in one song.

I really love this because it emphasizes what I think is the moral of Death Note. At first, you side with Light because he's mostly right but then as the series goes on he gets corrupted and his "justice" wasn't actually justice. The point is not that Light got corrupted, it's that ANYONE in this position would become corrupt. The anime says it itself: "The true evil is the power to kill somebody". It's not saying that Light's ideals are wrong, it's just saying that NO ONE can be trusted to carry out his "utopia". Plus, what about mercy? Not all criminals deserve it but some criminals definitely do. Light's not wrong but the world cannot be that black and white. Once you realize that, you understand that you have to side with the teacher. Even L said that Light's utopia was immature. I love how this song (in concordance with the anime) leads you from the young Light's perspective to the aged teacher's perspective.

I think you really need to understand that this song can really just be a placeholder for whatever political or moralistic opinion anyone has which I really think is ridiculous. I could support Nazi fucking Germany and use this song as a “wow, this is relevant to me”. You cant just use an election, which will most likely be the same thing, same division, same parties in the next four years as a portrayal for how morally right your side of the political spectrum may be. If you ask me I think Trump and Vance want the best for the US, and so does Kamala and Walz. I dont think any president, even every voter in this country just wants to actively destroy the US. Our system is not perfect but then again there are several other societies in our world who have it a HELL LOT worse than us, even with the less crime. There will never be a 100% fair solution to really anything.
@BeybladeGenius101Ай бұрын
@manakotaupauu lol Donald Trump does NOT want what's best for the US and its people. His private dealings have long since revealed that. Even IF he did intend to do good for the people of the US, intentions are trumped by actions and results. However, that is not his intention. He's a proven career criminal whose actions during and before his first Presidency had a significant harm to the people of the United States, including causing numerous deaths during the COVID pandemic. He's also gotten away with his crimes because other people took the blame and the fall for him. It took the Supreme Court giving him a vaguely defined presidential immunity for him to reliably get away with his crimes. He's absolutely the type of person Light Yagami would abhor. Also, no you can't accurately represent the view FROM Nazi Germany's side using this song lol. It's the antithesis of its meaning. Basic human rights aren't some arbitrary "moralistic opinion" that you can break down and reasonably say "some groups of people don't deserve those." Project 2025 is all about that. Your rights end where another's begins. By violating those rights, you put yourself in a position for the same to happen to you, except through reasonable means of the law. It's meant to be set up for you to not commit more crimes or harm more people that way.
@manakotaupauuАй бұрын
@@BeybladeGenius101no dont get me wrong I 100% agree that Trump is a felon. My point here is that people act like him winning the election is some international threat that we will never recover from and its ridiculous. I feel like in US politics, or politics in general, people tend to demonize one another so quickly. For the last decades its never been “blue good, red bad” its always been voting for a lesser evil. There will be another election in four years, that will be just as frustrating and divisive as this one. Just using this song as “my political side is good and your side is evil” would be just really snobbish. Overall I think when it comes to politics in general there never really is a “good” but rather a compromise. Everyone working behind the curtains is either corrupt or a puppet, where I mean is that Harris and Walz arent saints for the American people either.

This musical being.. well... this musical It dawned on me that Kira's true downfall happened when he killed the very man who not only lived up to his idealistic standard to which he held humanity but also was the very basis of this standard, aka his father. Kira initially started killing criminals -aka people everyone agrees are evil- and then he started killing people who oppose him and turned against the system -aka people some say are evil but others say are necessary- and eventually he started wanting to clear the world from people who merely arent as good as he wanted humans to be, aka as good as his father. After killing the only real human who lived up to his standard his downfall was reassured because his crusade would never end no one would be less deserving of death than his father in his eyes.

I don’t think the original light would of killed anyone close to him. But when he gets that red glint in his eyes that’s Kira, not light. His true turning point is when he killed L. I feel like L knew that light was Kira but couldn’t believe it, when light killed him he also killed his sense of justice. Both of them where the same, they wanted justice. But Kira took control. You can see he’s a completely different character when he gives up the notebook, it’s almost like he’s possessed. Everyone who touches the notebook becomes corrupted. For me light died at the same time as L, once he killed his best friend, Kira took over and could kill anyone with no remorse. Even his own farther. Because he doesn’t care anymore. Demonic Queen Murder is still murder ... I understand the first killing since it was technically self defense in the behalf of the children. But the other ones ? Everyone has its own point of view but I think that self defense and saving someone’s endangered life are the only instances when you can kill someone. After all death penalty has never made any place on Earth safer ( statistics you can easily find on internet prove it) so what purpose does it serve ? Revenge ? But revenge isn’t justice. Justice is to treat everyone fairly according to their rights and life is the most basic human right. No one should be deprived of it except if there are no other choices. Besides shouldn’t we strive to better than criminals ? If killing is illegal then what entitles us to do it too ? If you defend a principle you have to follow it as much as you can.

The most chilling line for me is "perhaps it's time to drain the colour from it then ... "
@anabsolutebuffoon Жыл бұрын
The best line in this to point to that’ll foreshadow Light’s fall is the one about black and white thinking. The teacher proclaims that the world is not black or white, things are more complicated than perfectly good or perfectly bad. Light responds by saying they should ‘drain the color from it’ showing his very black and white worldview. Since he will never think of himself as being in the wrong, he will always be on that ‘perfectly good’ side and thus anyone against him is automatically ‘perfectly bad’. It is a dangerous worldview that does not allow for self reflection. Perhaps at first he leans on the morally right side, but even as he falls he will never change his mind on him being perfectly good. Edit: spelling
@toohottobegendersolid4 жыл бұрын
The problem with me and Death Note is that I supported Light. I feel that if you’ve murdered in cold blood and feel no regret, then you deserve karma, which in the case of murder, is death to you. I agreed with his ideology, because I’m quite utilitarian, but when he started killing people who got in the way of him I knew he’d become corrupted himself. Criminals deserve justice, karma or comeuppance, if that’s the death penalties for murderers then I feel they deserve it. I would personally want to give the death penalty to serial rapists, but that’s probably because a friend of mine was raped and she still isn’t the same and THE BASTARD WALKED FREE. That got a little hijacked by my feels, sorry, but I agree with Light in the beginning. But then he killed criminals who committed minor crimes and even innocents and even his own family if they ‘got in the way.’ The power got to his head, and if you showed Light at the end of the series to the Light at the beginning, he wouldn’t have supported himself.
@realbeefman3 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way: truly evil people who don't deserve second chances always fall through the cracks while people who've committed minor crimes always end up suffering. Light's the definiton of "the path to hell is paved with good intentions." And don't be sorry for getting a little hijacked by your feelings, it's natural to hate scum like the one who hurt your friend.

what I love so much abt this musical is how much depth there is in the lyrics and even the melodies and who sings what part. It's super cool to read comments analyzing the songs, and then most of the songs don't reference to outside the song, which makes for great animatic material. For example, in Hamilton there are mostly in context songs so it would be hard to use for something not in Hamilton. Whereas this music doesn't really reference Death Note things. just rambling, but another great thing is the way each song progresses the characters and the plot, while encompassing their personalities right then without really taking away (looking at you, Netflix).

If you're in the US and have a Netflix account, you're in luck. The entire original series is available to stream. Something really interesting from the perspective of someone who really should watch the musical sometime soon, is the lines about rich people and celebrities getting to get away with a lot more corrupt stuff than your average person. Which is objectively true, and seems like a good point, but then you stop and notice how in the original show, light never directly targets rich people committing crimes, I don’t know how true this is for the musical, but from a show/manga perspective it seems like a very emotionally driven argument that light is using to manipulate people to think his MO is actually justified.

The interesting thing is the fact that because this was meant to reflect the Japanese legal system, I think Light's arguments seem a lot more compelling. I feel like in this version, it's meant to criticize the corruption via billionaires/companies being able to be immune to the law because they can just pay out and the less financially stable people cannot get their justice, because a company can afford to drag a case on for forever and bleed out their opponent. In Japan, the issues does indeed lie in their actual justice system. A lot of American serial killers do indeed get up getting jailed and usually die in prison (though I am not a fan of the sensationalization of them), but a lot of Japan's serial killers often do not. And that's where Light's arguments lie.
