You see this most when someone can only afford one of them, imagine building a library of games on one platform over many years, it would be difficult and kinda dumb to completely start over on a new platform, so these ppl become loyal and are really invested in that platform, it typically starts when you start hearing ppl from other platforms talking smack about the only platform you are invested in, so of course you start feeling the need to defend the platform you ate loyal to, especially for sony fanboys who have seen nothing but success for playstation since day one, they have never been outsold by another platform so their fans feel entitled and get a big ego, but one thing the xbox fans need to realize is all the Sony 1st party studios were all created by Sony and wouldn't exist without Sony, while Microsoft just buys already established studios who were traditionally multi platform, these studios would exist without Microsoft, so you can kind of understand the Sony ponys gripes about Microsoft buying while Sony creates, I own both and I can clearly see this because I have something called perspective which most fanboys completely lack

Sometimes we've even told a customer like "yeah we have that feature" and then tell the coders to whip that up in the next month or so. And the competitors do it too and they know we do it, I think the big customers know it too. So every time we run into a competitors personnel they're like "That feature you added last minute was a really good play, we know you didn't have it when you told the client you do. Next time we'll push harder" and then we laugh over a beer even though we're often talking about winning or losing a contract worth several million euros. My girlfriend works for a cosmetics outlet - the staff can only wear makeup they sell in-store (while at work) so that customers have faith that the products being sold are desirable to those in the know, and they can't promote anything on their social media that might suggest otherwise. And I sort of get it. If someone comes up to you like "I love that lipstick" and you're like "thanks it's from another store", you're turning people away from the brands you supply. It is a little OTT, but it has a rationale to it.

10:00 This I completely agree with, while the industry has made jumps at certain points in time, I feel like it's stagnated massively when it comes to gameplay just to have a bigger more graphically detailed world. Ultimately if you strip games back to their core components the only difference you'll find in a game like Arkham City in 2011 and Elden Ring in 2022 is the scale and graphics, so I'd be interested to know what actual leaps there'll be in gaming over the next 10-20 years because bar going full VR integration I haven't seen many games pushing to redefine a genre of game let alone gaming as a whole to suggest gaming is going to be vastly different in decades to come.
@Ericboy114558 Жыл бұрын
There have been some leaps in gameplay systems but the jump has been considerably smaller than the decade before. Games that come to mind: Baldur's Gate III; for the massive amount of permutations in the story and gameplay. Hades; for the innovative blend of gameplay and story progression. Sekiro; for one of the most polished/free form and great feeling swordplay. Nier Automata; for the innovate blend between 3rd person action, shoot 'm up and platforming. (and crazy storytelling aswell) Hitman series reboot; For the extreme freedom and sandbox nature of the levels. But yeah, they are more like iterations and/or combinations of existing systems. There's been almost nothing truely original in a long while. (with the exception of some indie titles)
@thalanoth Жыл бұрын
I haven't played many games over the past decade. The few that I have played, I find myself turning the graphics down to as low as possible just to get as seam-less gameplay as I can lol. With the exception of one the guy before me mentioned... (nier automata needs max graphics to enjoy the beauty of the scenery to accompany the absolute banger of every song in the sound track ;). ) Jokes aside, even armored core 6 gives me some frame drops when shit is hitting the fan, I refuse to sacrifice frames for enjoying the graphics (excellent game by the way, glad it is one of my 1 to 2 purchases of game[s] per year)

The problem is that the controllers we use havent significantly advanced in capabilities in over 2 decades. Even if you stan gyro, thats just mouse aim for controllers. Mouse aim has existed for a very long time too. Game design cant really advance until the way we interact with the games also advance. Unfortunately, any time someone tries to innovate in the controller space it gets shot down by the masses calling it a gimmick. VR could potentially revolutionize the game space, but a: its a slow burn right now due to low adoption and b: due to the requirements of vr its unlikely it would replace non vr gaming - the best it can really hope for is coexistence.

@@gordonlove5121 Yeah i agree with you, it makes sense too. AAA developers can't take as big of risks as AA or indie devs can. Blowing up a tree is also part of the computer graphics tho and that's what she is trying to say too. How such mechanic could be computed is limited and that's the technical limitation, the computing power of the current hardware. You would not have the same feeling from blowing up the tree if it did not look like blowing up the tree, for example if it just disappeared and some text said "you blew up a tree".

@KelvinKamsg Жыл бұрын
This is a memory from a long time ago: I remember one of the devs commenting about the AI in F.E.A.R., they stated that a big part of it was level design and how working hand in hand with the AI team to sort of "make" the AI behave more intelligent than it really was, if that makes any sense? E.g. designing the level in such a way that the AI's decisions would result in flanking the player. Again, old memory, so spoonfuls of salt, also currently tipsy

What people don't know is that even the higher ups in different studios talk to each other all the time. Even if the companies are technically "exclusive" to opposite consoles. I'm sure Todd has spoken to the CEO of whatever studio she works at on more than one occasion. They all cross each other at conventions and other business events, etc. I was a game tester for 10 years at a AAA studio and this was pointed out to me more than once. The first time was because someone did something really dumb and leaked some screenshots and information. He was fired and my lead said "Well that guy's probably never going to work in the game industry for a long time." I asked why and he explained that the game industry is kind of insular, so if you do something stupid like that word gets around. CEOs talk to each other and will warn each other about people." The second time it happened was one of the IT guys was working from home and forgot the work VPN was on and downloaded an episode of Game of Thrones (especially bad since we worked for WB). The bosses didn't actually really care and the guy was well-liked and it was an honest mistake, but he HAD to be fired for appearance's sake. The boss called the boss at another studio and arranged to have the guy get hired over there. Also, lets not forget that every dev at every studio probably has a Nintendo Switch at home. Every Xbox dev probably has a least one Playstation at home as well. Maybe 2 if they have kids. It's completely asinine to think that just because you work at a developer you can't play and/or stream any other company's games. EDIT: 15:14 Those fun media kits and early access that her friends in the media get are exactly the kind of thing GamerGate was about. Yeah it shouldn't be a thing. Those gifts come with the expectation that you'll give the game a positive review. If they don't give a positive review, then they won't get the gifts and early access next time.

Better hardware allows also for better gameplay, not just graphics. With better hardware, Starfield could allow seamless travel between planets, for example. In theory with destructible environment even with good enough harware. More interactivity often requires better hardware. In the future, game interactivity will be amazing, graphics too. But on the other hand, monetization practices will be inconceivably more toxic than they already are.

I think one thing people don't realize is that while interesting, it's still a job... I'm an engineer for one of the main car companies, and you probably drive or have ridden in the fruits of my work. And I love the brand, sure, they make some of the most reliable cars in the world, and I'm a car enthusiast, and many people there are car enthusiasts as well.....but it's also a job. I care more about my performance review than I do if a car sells well. And I enjoy our cars, and I enjoy different brands, I have some of each. So the idea that people on the inside are the same kind of Nazi level loyalists as fanbois is kinda nutty. She hit the nail on the head when she said she has taxes to do and shit - we have lives outside of the companies. We love the company, but we wouldn't do this for free, it's not charity work. And I think that's a hard time for end users to make peace with because for them it IS the entertainment, it IS for free. She also hit the nail on the head that a given industry is SMALL on the inside. It's SUPER normal to know people at other companies within your industry and when somebody joins from another company you're like "Oh shit, do you know so-and-so?" even though there's like 40k people who work there, but more commonly than you'd expect they do know them, and you can have a quick laugh about how small the world is. So yea, super common to have friends at all the other players in your industry and there's no animosity or zealotry anything, lol, that's kinda nuts.
