I was making leisurely miles in Northern California on my BMW RT when a fair-sized group of East Bay Dragons came up on me. I moved over to allow them to pass and was surprised to have two or three members wave me in to join them! I rode with them for several miles after joining them and felt the community of riders had reached new horizons for me. When my exit came up, I saluted all and received smiles and salutes in return and have remembered this little incident (about 25 minutes or so) with pleasure ever since and am sorry that circumstances didn't allow me to meet these fellow riders.

It is something completely different to ride in a "big" group like that out on the open roads. I totally get why people create clubs to ride together, that is def the most fun and great aspect of it. Lifetime rider here. Find this ridiculous. The issue is that groups of riders (usually on cruisers) act as rolling roadblocks (and they don't care). That's what's discourteous. The idea that I should have to get permission to pass someone that is already acting in a discourteous manner just isn't right. These groups feel they can impose their riding style on others - that's not OK.

One thing i never see, in the comments, that should be considered is - Keep in mind (depending on your state laws) a caravan of motorcycles is treated the same as ONE vehicle. If the 1st part of the group has made it through a green light and now that light has turned red, the cars waiting at the cross street (with the now green light) are required to WAIT for the rest of the group to proceed through the (now) red light. This is why there is normally one member of the group parked in front of them (a courteous reminder 2 wait). With that in mind, how much care would you use to pass a vehicle that is over 100yd long? You might make sure it doesn't plan on changing lanes in the immediate future? This is just one of the factors but it is the one rarely mentioned.

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's not "bullies" it's safety when you're riding around a large pack. A really big pack takes a lot of organizing. Outriders to block traffic at intersections to ensure the entire pack makes it through. A guy riding drag who will help anyone who falls behind. The lead at front left who makes decisions and a road captain. You're doing the right thing by contacting by a wave the guy riding drag. He knows if there's a turn coming up and you don't want to be in the middle of the pack when it lane changes for a turn. You get in a close call, or make physical contact with a bike in the pack or god forbid cause an accident because you got pissy about them riding in a pack and decided to do whatever you felt like because "I'll show them." Well, you'll get what you have coming then for showing no respect and causing an accident. It's up to you to know these things if you ride in areas where there's lots of MCs and a large biking community. You give respect and they'll give it back. It's easy as that.

We live on a busy state hwy and spring and summer means motorcycle groups doing their outings. I would say that most are respectful owners and riders. But there's always the wanna be dudes and gals who are more interested in riding "cool" than being safe. Riding in very tight groups and of course trying to make as much noise as they can so people notice them. There was a serious accident a few years ago when a group of riders like that experience some sort of obstruction on the road when the front bikes braked suddenly and the bikers toward the rear of the pack could not react in time. A female rider on the back of one of those bikes died in the crash. She was not wearing a helmet or good leathers. Just street cloths and not very much of that. Gotta look hot you know.

Most Definitely! It’s all about respect & most importantly, safety. I was always taught that the “permission” procedure was reserved for passing OMCs.. but since becoming the Road Captain of my chapter, I get the yes or no from all MCs. You never know what moves they need to make soon or what the conditions are up ahead! Stay Safe.. Stay Dangerous!! - Trouble2Times✌🏽

I don't know if this is a USA thing but if anyone driving or riding doesn't need permission and nobody has any right to object to overtaking in a safe manner. I for one am not asking anyone for permission, I've been riding for over 30 years and I've never heard anything so stupid.

I ride a 110cc bike and was surprised at how bikers nod and wave. I thought I’d be shunned and they’d laugh at my ”scooter”, but actually it’s the opposite. It’s my first time on 2 wheels and I’m still very new. I am really liking the bike community much more than the car community.

This education needs to get passed on to everyone. Now some times, you might run into a crew that don’t want you to pass them. Now for any reason you feel you need to pass them and it’s safe…what do you do? This is why I will always keep a fast bike cause you might have to scoot on pass them. I’ve heard of situations but never experienced them.

While riding Mountain Road My group of 3 1:41 came up on some 4 HD guys. They were Clueless to Us being Behind them… so when the road opened up, We went past them. With No issues, or I thought… the at the gas station they came up to talking about Rider etiquette…. I was thinking , should I use Smoke signals or text them to Pass… Most HD riders don’t wear Helmets or ear protection. So they can stuff their etiquette where the sun doesn’t shine.

I belong to the most exclusive MC in existence. I am the only member, and there are no schoolyard rules telling me how to sit, how to stand in line, how to speak. The charter of my MC is to expand the boundaries of a free life. I regard every rider as a brother, until he proves unworthy of that regard. I treat all riders with reasonable respect and courtesy. That includes getting the attention of a fellow rider before passing. But getting "permission"? Get permission, or what? An implied threat? Stacking up twenty bikes so nobody can pass is the discourteous behavior. When someone rides up behind me, I move over and wave them on, and wish them godspeed.

It's smart to do , the group might be about to change lanes into the lane that you're in. The guy in the back could let the others know to wait , or let me know to wait. It's common sense.

@@rottweilerfun9520 Or maybe, like normal drivers and everyone else on the road, you look before trying to change lanes and if someone is in the way you just wait? Asking to pass someone on the hwy is the dumbest sh*t I've heard of, and is actually dangerous since most people won't know what the hell you're doing and will be distracting trying to figure out what you're on about.

Interesting video. In my 32 years of riding, I have never asked permission to pass another group of riders. Nor have I ever had another group of riders ask for my permission. One time I was on the interstate passing a group and some of them came up onto a car and I got over into the far-left track and pointed for them to come over onto the right track, so they didn't have to slow down for the car as I was passing them and then the car. But that's it. Some of the handlebars on the bikes in the video are pretty awesome. 👍

I get a little sketched out when I'm riding along and see a big group of bikers coming up behind me. Is there a protocol for that? Do i need to just get over and let them pass? I usually do just get out of the way and give them the wave. But I honestly don't know club rules

More of this! Been daily commuting for just a few years on a big bore bike but I totally agree with everything you say. If anything rules, common sense and courtesy get you home safe. Took out a few mirrors, brake-checked here and there but soon realized that was not going to solve anything. Liked and subscribed. Understanding one another and learning to communicate is key.

Several years ago, I was on the road in Arizona riding solo, number 1 lane when a biker rolled up on the #2 lane and pointed forward. I looked over, nodded my head and off he went. That was the first time anyone had ever done that to me and I was taken aback. I didn't notice what colors he had on and I'm sure he couldn't see all of my Firefighter colors, but it felt nice. A few years later I was riding back home, in the carpool lane when I came up to a 1%, 2 lanes away from me. I slowed down, he looked at me and I pointed forward and he nodded for me to go. So, as you stated, respect goes a long way. By the way, a couple of rice rockets had passed me before I came up to the 1% and they didn't look over or slow down. Ride safe and long.

I have been riding solo multiple times when I see a group coming. Without fail, the leader pulls up and acknowledges me, waits for my return acknowledgement, waves and they are on their way. These have all been from the 1% clubs in my area.

Bullshit! I caught up to a six pack this morning. I waited for a passing lane to go around them and they blocked both lanes. I had to follow their slow asses all the way to my turn to the twisties. Bikers are thugs and once they put that vest on and join their group they are suddenly tough guys. Having to deal with slow cars sucks. Having to deal with thugs on bikes is just stupid!!!!!
