It all went wrong with the seventh gen. During the golden age (early 2000s to early 2010s) videogames began mainstream and everyone understood how much money this industry could generate. Then the corporate greed started to slowly infect the media, wich lead to a lot of developers being lazy, unoriginal and having an overall lack of passion that was also combined to a general misunderstanding of what gamers want. I used to be a dedicated Xbox fan because of Halo. I'm 25 years old, and Halo CE was the first video game I ever played. Its music and story immersed me completely, becoming my obsession for most of my life. I know the names of all the species of aliens in Halo! From the Sangheili (Elites) to the Kig-Yar (Jackals), the Unggoy (Grunts), and even the Lekgolo (Hunters), it's all part of the rich lore that made Halo so captivating. I played every Halo from CE to Infinite. However, after Reach, every game felt like a flop. I was super excited for Halo 4 and even asked my parents to get me the Xbox 360 Halo 4 Edition for Christmas. I played it to death, but it wasn't as complete as Reach-it felt different. So much was missing: multiplayer game modes, the art style was completely different and felt like a different universe, the rank systems and loadout system were reminiscent of Black Ops II, and the story was disappointing. Then came another flop, Halo 5, with its subpar multiplayer and loot boxes, and a story that was forgettable. Halo 4 had at least decent gunplay, but Halo 5 felt like a Chinese knockoff of Destiny mixed with Black Ops III. They tried to reset with Halo Infinite, promising to return to the classic art style, add split-screen, and do everything right. But they failed by releasing Halo: The Store Beta with only two game modes and 10 skin packs, each costing $10. Microsoft messed up by giving Halo to 343 Industries, and now they are about to press the reset button again. Rebranding to Halo Studios won't undo their mistakes. They created the Halo TV show and sold Master Chief like a cheap commodity. They killed our nostalgia and dreams, misused the mantle of responsibility, and are not worthy. Halo Studios is a joke and doesn't deserve our attention or money. Their constant missteps and inability to understand what made Halo great in the first place have driven away loyal fans. The franchise has become a shadow of its former self under their management. I bought a PS5 against all my friends' wishes, being an Xbox fan through and through. But I saw a trailer that inspired hope in my heart, and that trailer was for Helldivers II. It had a different name but carried the same spirit Halo once did, so I had to try it. I haven't touched my Xbox since Helldivers II was released. Xbox increased the Game Pass subscription fee and keeps releasing mediocre games. I don't feel they deserve my money, and with how they're handling consoles, it doesn't seem like my money would be well invested in an Xbox either. Helldivers II is available on PS5 and PC. It's made by developers who actively communicate with the community through Discord, accept their mistakes, and give back to the community. They are real players making a fun game that is worth every penny. Helldivers II is an adrenaline rush! The cooperative gameplay, intense battles against hordes of enemies, and the use of powerful Stratagems make every mission an exciting challenge. The game's humor and unique blend of strategy and chaos keep things fresh and entertaining. Plus, Arrowhead Studios has gone above and beyond for their fans. They've incorporated fan-created lore into the game, held engaging Twitch events, and even received a life-sized statue from Sony to celebrate their achievements. They also regularly release videos featuring their head developers and CEO, reminiscent of Bungie back when they made Halo 2 and Halo 3, showcasing their commitment and passion for the game. If you want to play a game today that feels like Halo, you should try Helldivers II. It has the fun multiplayer that Halo had back in the day and offers something fresh and innovative. Put your money where it's going to be well invested-support developers who truly care about their community and their games. #makehalogreataagain

This was(is), by far, the first of the worst retcons of story writing in Halo history. It was so bad to the point that I personally started a passion project with a buddy of mine that fixes that problem. But even then, 343 and whoever else is responsible up there will most likely see it as a fan-made alternate universe (which it is). 343i is a lesson on corporate hubris and we see that at multiple game dev studios these days. The biggest problem with devs these day is this utter and unshakable belief that they are right. Fan reaction, poor sales, qa testers, content creators? No, theyre all wrong. Our vision is flawless, they just dont get it! Its a combination of corporate culture and the infection of games are art people into the industry. Originally a game studio would be made up of and headed by enthusiasts, people who wanted to make a fun experience, who played games themselves for the love of the game. Now the leadership of these companies are made up of HR officers, art and polysci majors, or Patrick Bateman expies. How many times are gamers going to fall for the "we hear you, we acknowledge your worries and complaints, were returning to form, our community is important to us" only for the product to be the exact same slop as previous but somehow worse? They never learn the lessons from their failed projects. They simply shut their eyes and plug their ears and say. "We know better, our story, our art, is outstanding, the fanbase doesnt know what it wants and is wrong!" They go on to remove the few things players liked and double down for their next entry and a portion of the base gobble it up. Just look at the content creators soyjacking over 343i being "dead" its not dead. Its literally the same company with a name change. Its a rebrand due to bad PR. Literally nothing will change with the next Halo title. I dont even bother with AAA slop anymore.

@@hickory654 It was truly a different time. I grew up poor and struggling, in a dysfunctional family, with little escape save from the games and consoles that were charitably given to me and my brother by our more stably living relatives. Every experience was magical -- There were so many different titles made with a love and passion directed towards making fun, intriguing, emotional games. Even now into my 20s I look back fondly to the time I spent with my brother, playing games we borrowed, were gifted, or managed to buy. Despite everything, it was like we hit the perfect point where we got to experience the golden era, the birth of a new industry, before shareholders and corporations sucked dry the creativity and passion for the craft. I truly feel bad for the current generations which never got to experience the culture of the late 90s - early 2000s. Supposedly, every generation feels this way, with a perceptive bias towards their own childhood, but I really think that time period was like lightning in a bottle, and I'm not so sure there will ever be anything quite like it again. As for the current gaming industry, I dropped AAA titles a long time ago. I look towards small studios and solo developers, where passion, creativity, and love for the work still thrives. Forgot to mention that Bungie has renovated the FPS for console and created the 'Golden Triangle' mechanic (gun/grenade/melee) where every FPS games after Halo is based on. If you see any games that used the triangle and the two weapon capacity, you're practically playing a Halo game with a different skin.

Halo 2 Anniversary wasn’t even made by 343i at all, none of it. The cutscenes were animated by Blur Studios and the gameplay was made by Saber Interactive. The best thing to apparently come from 343 wasn’t even made by 343 to begin with. If anything they just got it published. Same with Halo Wars 2

Months back Halo fans creamed their panties over the news that 343 Industries would become Halo Studios, but they missed the point that it was simply a rebranding exercise, no different than many other major corporations when they are trying to escape bad press. Nothing has fundamentally changed, and until Halo is taken out of the hands of these people and given to a studio with actually experience making successful games and which cares about Halo, the Halo franchise and it's legacy will continue to be degraded.

Gotta say, that’s a huge misunderstanding of what a bell curve is. It’s a statistical distribution where most things are in the middle (for this example, average game quality), and there’s only a small tail at either end of things that are either completely rubbish, or absolutely exceptional. You’d want to rework the example to put Halo 3 at the far end of the bell curve where there are only a tiny fraction of exceptional games.

I agree with most of what you said except for the H2A point, if you're talking about the multiplayer I full heartedly agree that it was mediocre at best, but the campaign remaster is one of the best remasters of a game I've played in a while in my opinion. I wasn't a player in the peak of halo but shortly after, ironically enough my bigger brother introduced me to my first game, Halo 2, which I played the campaign for a bit and then he bought a 360 and we played reach for the first time, I played both the campaign and multiplayer over and over again until the servers shut down which made me sad I wasn't able to play it anymore. But a couple years later he bought Halo 3 and I finally was able to enjoy that game for a time, because this after all the servers were shut down, and this rekindled my love of the game.

"But muh lore" Yeah, I get it, Chief is the poster boy of Halo, but what's the sense of all of the money and work for cosmetics if I can't enjoy them in every aspect of the game, especially in single-player? There's even cosmetics that can be unlocked in single-player, but can only be used in multiplayer... Get fucked, 343. I don't feel bad for those who spent their time and money on this shit. I'm just disappointed in them for essentially giving a dog treats after it shits on their bed, and proceeds to complain about why the dog keeps shitting on their bed.

I still remember being 13, completely blown away while playing the Halo: Reach campaign. That ending-seeing Noble Six make his final stand-stuck with me. Back then, I just couldn’t understand it. Why couldn’t he win? Why couldn’t he escape? It felt unfair. Now, looking back as an adult, I get it. Noble Six’s story wasn’t about winning; it was about sacrifice, about being part of something bigger . His death wasn’t meaningless-it was the reason humanity had a chance. That moment captured everything Halo was about: It was tragic, but it was perfect. It’s hard to see what Halo has become now. The storytelling, the themes, the soul of the series- don’t get me started on the gameplay - it feels like all soulless, the heart of the series was thrown away, not because it needed to change, but because making money took priority without bungie at the helm to try and manage Microsoft’s demands and expectations. Halo isn’t what it used to be, and it’s painful to say, but the series needs to have a painful death so it can perhaps be sold and start again at worst or left to rest at best.

You’re spot on about so many points, but I think a lot of fans (and even you) might not realize the role shareholders play. Companies like Microsoft are legally bound to maximize profits for shareholders, so creative risks or even prioritizing Halo over something like Call of Duty isn’t always feasible. It’s unfortunate, but it explains why Halo has struggled to get the resources or direction it truly deserves. Not saying i approve of any of this but the unfortunate reality of America - the biggest economy in human history is run by corporate suits who take the fun out of everything. I hate to break it to you, Halo Infinite is not a good game. The gameplay may be the closest to a functional Halo experience that 343i has gotten, but it is still worse than even CE's sandbox and gameplay. Sure it may look more like Halo than every other 343i project, but just like when you blow up a phantom in Infinite, interacting with it reveals it to be a flat, barely functional, poor imitation of what came before. The Forge has amazing capabilities, but it's so expansive and unwieldy that only the Forge fanatics use it. Gone are the simple map object shuffles and adjustments that casual dabblers would do that freshened up the regular pool of maps, keeping the air of familiarity while also sprinkling in newness. And not to mention that Forge dropped so late in Infinite's life cycle that Halo 5 got Forge earlier, and Halo 5 got their Forge late - meaning if it gets it after launch, it's too late. Halo Infinite makes Halo 5 look good (outside of the art style and stupid movement system), and Halo 5 was a loot box game. Halo Infinite is a cash shop with a barely functioning game stapled onto it. That's it.
