Technically he understands the going in and out thing, he seems to fail at geometry - using links/triangles/squares/etc to translate the in/out of a hydraulic into a fancy 2D movement of what ever could be constructed. He always connects them like point-to point and makes them bigger if he needs more movement. Basically "pantograph'y" eludes him. Or you know, he pretends to be an idiot for engagement in comments ;)

Me and a mate, both of us on the heavier side, decided we'd jump in a lift(Aussie), actually jump, yes and it went about as you'd expect, we were heading down and it clunked and then sent us back up, the place we'd been had a reception desk at the lift and the girl there said oh you're back, and we both laughed and said yeah I dunno what happened, it was a might scary for about 3 seconds until we realised we didn't break the lift just reset it in some fashion.

Robot's name is GlaDOS but technically Chell the protagonist of Portal 1 and 2 could call her mother and be technically right, since she was based on Caroline who seems to have been her mother. There are some weird clues like Chell's potato clock from her bring daughter to work day entry having grown much more then a potato should indicating that she was probably the daughter of the insane recently deceased owner of Aperture Cave Johnson, who was almost definitely the husband of Caroline whose last name is never mentioned.... he probably juiced it to "give her the edge on the competition!" half a dozen other potato clocks

Chell states that she uses a "special ingredient from Dad's work" with an Aperture logo on it, but I'd still say that it's pretty far fetched to claim Cave and/or Caroline are Chell's parent(s). Remember, Cave died BEFORE GLaDOS was created, likely several years prior. I doubt a girl approximately 8 years old would point out it's her DAD'S job if he had been dead most her life or longer. And if Caroline was her mom, wouldn't she point out it's her mom's work? I'd say it's much more likely her father was just... one of the lab boys. And her mother didn't even work there.

The point is Chell so nonchalantly claims the chemicals are from "Dad's work" even though, according to this theory, DAD'S DEAD. "the song which sends Chell off to the surface is a song of farewell to a precious little girl" True, the song does refer to Chell as "my child," "my beloved," and "my dear, dear baby," but remember, GLaDOS has watched Chell all throughout the 2 games, and eventually bonds with her, claiming "all along you were my best friend." It seems GLaDOS sees Chell as a sort of daughter, one way or another, but it seems more likely that it's simply the bond they've grown since GLaDOS was first put in the potato battery. Heck, the first thing she says after being disconnected from the mainframe is "You didn't do anything, she did all the work" so clearly she understood what Chell had been through even if, up to that point, she didn't really care. Now that she was disconnected, she could finally hear her own voice and began to realize how terribly she had treated Chell, later stating "I think there's something REALLY wrong with me!" It seems she's simply regretful and finally cares about Chell. "in lab rat, her last name is redacted, the only one shown to be such" Well we don't see every single name in the whole list, now do we? There certainly could be others. It's strange though that they didn't just give her a fake last name. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'M not sure what's going on outside. All I know is: I'm the only thing standing between us... and THEM. Well, I was"), but she also now respects Chell and decides, safe or not, Chell wants, and deserves, to leave. GLaDOS also probably didn't want Chell thinking that she had gotten attached, so the "Caroline Deleted" lie makes sense, making it seem like she isn't wanted there anymore. "Now I only want you gone" so to speak.

portal 1 realistically takes place during the alien invasion/occupation after black mesa F-ed up, she wakes up in portal 2 and unknown amount of time later and aperture labs is downright dangerous to be in, the control of the mainframe seems to drive AIs insane, glaDOS might have had that reason to send her away. Also cave was insane and stupid enough to be called an intelligence dampener, he was rich and determined, not smart or logical. You hear him rattling out terrible ideas through his monologues disguised as introductions. Also as stated I am telling you about a pretty compelling fan theory which is basically the accepted theory about the series @@watsgoinonhere1 these really aren't from me, I usually like looking at the authors original intent which had Chell talk at the end of Portal 2 to beat Wheatley instead of the moon thing. Basically she didn't talk in Portal 2 because she hates all the AIs. So I saw it more as a Tsukkomi routine, logical vs illogical, all of aperture representing the illogical and Chell is the silently screaming logical, past that I liked Ratman but as that theory says even Ratman's murals indicate a connection between Chell and Aperture that is more then Daughter of employee.

I'm sure RCE already knows this, but the real reason you're not supposed to jump in an elevator is because it triggers the emergency brakes. As part of the wheels that hold the elevator in place in the shaft, elevators have these really clever, mechanically actuated brakes. If a cable breaks, the elevator starts to fall and the wheels start spinning really fast. The centrifugal force created by the spinning wheels causes hook-shaped arms in the wheels to fling out and catch in the wheel casing. This locks up the wheels to stop the elevator if it starts to fall. To err on the side of safety, these brakes are actually more sensitive than they sound, and jumping in the elevator can jerk them hard enough to activate them.
