Ethiopia is reverse hoi4 experience till 1943. Insane micro till 1938 and then autopilot till 1942. After that Allies smashing and game done by 1945 (Africa wise).

I actually quite enjoy playing Ethiopia, particularly the anarchist branch, since fighting a micro intensive war against Italy without any outside help is quite fun. The main problem with Ethiopia is everything after ending the war with Italy.

To get the resources and essentially the Ethiopian industrial revolution you have to separate into every individual country then reintegrate after all industrial focuses are chosen, so like 1950 you’ll have 100+ factories if you’re lucky

There's a crazy powerful strat under the soviet aid tree where you can bypass becoming a puppet. If you take all of the Italian territories they will offer peace and you can keep those Soviet rifles, no strings attatched.

You have to be very fast and get a bit lucky though but it’s certainly possible and the only way Ethiopia can be somewhat fun after defeating Mussolini (I don’t consider that being part of it). It d be a lot better if you were able to offer peace via decision and if you kept the Italian colonies even when despite them occupying some random desert tile. They cd also just not force you into becoming a puppet if you won against the Italians

It does with mil buffs, but you have to be precise and your country is kinda wrecked. Historically it's ok, I just wish they gave you an option for resource extraction and colony purchase like French Somaliland.

From my understanding of how the AI works in Hoi4 is that the game rolls all possible decisions from the start of the game, just in case they happen. So reloading a save isn't going to change anything. You would have to restart, and so when ISP does so here and it worked, he could have just pushed and then do it. I had to learn all this just to successfully assassinate Stalin. The worst part about this is it kinda ruins the fun of the game for me. If I want to have a dead stalin via the decisions, I have to load a game, make a save, and then console command through the decisions and foci just to see if I am going to get a dead stalin this run, then either restart or reload depending on the answer. Makes zero damn sense for the AI to work like this in game.

Other than the fact that you have to pick between a 4th research slot or having any damn resources, if they made them no longer exclusive I'd find it a lot more tolerable bar the horrible brokeness of the rebellion system. The rest is mainly a pacing problem since you need to do a lot of 70d foci to get rid of debuffs, if they were reduced to 35 and/or added some secondary rewards they'd be much better off.

EDIT: I am late to the punch I always pay attention ISP. Sept 7th 1943 -29 factories 9:00 Between March 15th 1944 (9:30) and October 11th 1944 (10:57) you had 31 factories On September 2nd 1945 (11:13) you had 32 factories. Those are counting the times where the bar on the top was actually shown which it often isn’t, so I didn’t get many good looks at it. I’d guess from about Feb 1944-prolly August 1945 was how long you had 31 factories

Can't wait for the Sweden's The New Order path! You get to rush fascism but become a German puppet which bricks your economy and you also lose almost all expansion opportunities. When you eventually do complete the TNO focus all you get is a name change, some manpower and a heavy tank division. Very fun play through would recommend it a lot!!!

If you win the war against the Italians on your own and wait to get the peace from the escalation to bypass the focus. Additionally, Ethiopia can be fun, but its mainly if people/AI go non-historical and you can then take advantage of that to start unifying Africa through one of a variety of ways, or even to get yourself the carribean as your puppets.

I recently got the Red Sea achievement where you have to take everything bordering the red sea as Communist Ethiopia. It was actually not as painful as I thought it would be, but in the end I still was after all Communist Ethiopia.

@@tuturg7454 No worries, it took me a couple of tries and it's been some time since I got it but in essence I built up for the long game: I went the Anarcho-Communist route since I did not want to become a Soviet puppet. Made holding somewhat more difficult but you get a lot of extra units from the balance of power when you go left. I suggest still trying to get 10% support on the right to get the focus to switch your conscription laws, after that left is the way to go. I also tried to rush the Infrastructure Projects focusses before "Develop the Horn of Africa" since that gives you decisions to integrate Eritrea and Somaliland once they break free from Italy. Once the Italians are pushed out and I sued for peace with them, I first naval invaded Saudi Arabia (important: take the navy focus that lets you purchase old ships from UK, Germany and US and research landing tech asap!), then took out Yemen. I then joined Comintern and helped Joseph defeat the Nazis. I was banking on Turkey to start WW3 between Allies and Comintern somewhere in 1944-1945ish after the Axis was dead, and once WW3 started I had an army of mountaineers rush towards Suez from Saudi Arabia, another elite'ish army go north from the Eritrean border, another army took out UK's holdings south of Yemen, another around British Somaliland and another just held my border. A couple of puppet divisions were on port guard duty. Since the Allies were extremely busy in Europe getting absolutely shat on by the Comintern, pushing in Africa was quite easy and I got the achievement after taking Alexandria and Cairo in quick succession. Thats more or less the jist of it. You only need to hold/occupy the tiles on the Red Sea, not own them.
