I met Viggo Mortensen at LAX in 2010 while I was working for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He was so humble and unassuming. You would had never known he was a movie star by the way carried himself.
@music4dages3 ай бұрын
My "I-met-a-star" moment took place at the Newark Airport bathroom. Nothing kinky you perverted thinkers out there. I was just washing my hands when this guy walks up and it turns out to be Peter Stormare. He's the blond haired guy in Fargo, the eye surgeon in Minority Report and the abusive husband in Chocolat. He was incredibly polite and interesting to chat with. He was making Prison Break at the time and he didn't bother to alter his appearance even in public. If you didn't know he was a movie star, you would have given him a wide berth if you met him on the street. It's great when you can meet actors in real life and you realize that they are basically like you and me...........except for the exquisite homes that they live in.

Viggo Mortensen has always been one of my favorite actors and there's very few that could have been better cast for this movie. His mild mannered demeanor coupled with the ability to turn a scene into something electrifying is awesome to watch. The story of a once corrupt bad guy (now good guy) who has turned his life around and settled in a small town but still knows how to take care of business, if he needs to, is one we can all get into. That's a pretty high rating, especially for a violent R-Rated movie that is shockingly brutal and dark. It made critical top ten lists, and was listed as the best movie of the year by a popular poll conducted by the Village Voice. So, tell us again how that fits the definition of underrated. Thanks for this recap. It might inspire others to go and watch the full movie. This was good, but in 15 minutes it can't offer the full impact of the movie. Once the wife understands what Tom is capable of she begins to have fear of him. He is still Tom, he has not been aggressive toward her but she fears him just the same. Often that is how people treat returning veterans of war. They have fear when they fully comprehend that person is capable of snuffing people. It's no wonder veterans seldom talk about what they have seen and done, they don't want to frighten their family and friends. I have fellow veterans of Vietnam whose families think they were in the rear echelon, maybe a cook, or truck mechanic because they have never mentioned being in real combat. Tom came to his senses, did not want to be a part of the violence. He somehow managed to slip away, earn enough money to buy a diner and raise a family. That was what he really wanted. The mobsters as usual had that, "We are bigger then you", mentality and weren't smart enough to leave "Joey" alone. They paid dearly for their ego. I have watched this movie twice and was moved by it both times. I see people I know being pushed into situations that Tom faced. Wanted to be a decent law abiding person but people just don't have enough sense to leave them alone. Because they seek to avoid confrontation, the bullies consider them as weak. It can be a deadly mistake. A few days ago I watched a video of a guy on a bus in a big city, minding his business, two thugs start to harass him. So at next stop he decides to get off. Thugs figure he's scared and start to push him around. Big mistake. That guy can hit like a prize fighter, close inside punches that send the thugs falling backwards. They both need medical care. He didn't want to hurt anyone but when threatened he became defensive and dangerous. There is a look we share when us veterans detect another vet. Some wear shirts or hats that depict how they served. That's good. It suggests they have dealt with that part of their life and are moving forward. Friends and family probably know and have accepted that they associate with someone who has been trained to combat an enemy. That is therapeutic for all of them.
@johnmiranda3641 Жыл бұрын
Excellent analogy honestly with the violence Veterans have done while serving who also wish to leave that part of their life behind. As for dealing with thugs, usually just a stare is enough to make them understand. Though in my personal experience simply asking them, "How does it end?" can be sufficiently unnerving too. Yes, a couple of times I endured listening to lunacy about how I was going to get my ass kicked bla bla bla. On those occasions I politely let the moron rant until he was finished and then calmly told him," This ends when I hear you say three words." They I merely explained what would occur. You will take a swing. When you do I break your arm above and below the elbow. Then I will pancake your elbow and dislocate your shoulder. Prior to the arrival of the ambulance you will look at your arm and begin to scream, "CUT IT OFF." Once I hear that, I walk away. That is how this ends. Take a swing at me and it begins. That will sound like bravado obviously, I could careless. It works. Have I ever heard another scream those three words? I will leave that to your imagination. Cheers. 🇺🇲

As an actual tough guy who was a bouncer in Chicago bars for 18 years, you have a point, but not sure you know what it is. If it's "there's always someone tougher", that's not the point. The point is when you lead a violent life, you have darkness and regrets that you must face. I did things to people that I regret but also saved women from sexual assaults and men from being seriously injured. If you don't face the bad, it WILL come back one day to face YOU.

That final scene is chilling. There's no dialogue. Only Sarah gets up. She has no idea what Tom/Joey actually is. Edie and Jack don't move; they're terrified. They've met the most brutal killers and realize that Tom/Joey is more dangerous than all of them combined. Tom only looks "normal". Tom didn't kill-off Joey, he is Joey. Tom's the creation, the man Joey decided he'd like to be but isn't. Years after Joey supposedly left his violence behind he can still easily and unemotionally kill the most deadly men imaginable without missing a beat. Is he a hero? The answer is decidedly No.

The violent sex scene is, I think, I meant to represent the unrepressed aggression of Joey that the new man Tom has long repressed. This is a very Freudian movie in that sense. Sexual conquest, like violence, is one of our basic animal drives that we as a species have learned to repress in order to build civilization, but it's always under the surface. The criminal is one in whom it is not repressed.

I saw Tom at that moment as a man desperate to reclaim the peaceful life he had come to know. He felt his entire life slipping away, his wife, his family, his sense of place in the community. Not the best way to accomplish it, for sure, but desperate men under desperate circumstances sometimes do desperate things.

This is one movie that for some reason neither HBO, Showtime. Cinemax or MGM will air. I actually hold out hope that TCM will air it since they have already aired The Wild Bunch. Viggo's performance here is mesmerizing and fits nicely in the trio of dramas along side Eastern Promises and The Green Book. There is a featurette of the making of this movie which is absolutely fascinating especially the part where Osler (the 20 something in the beginning of the film) chats with the little girl that he winds up shooting. He's reassuring her that nothing bad is going to happen when the director calls for action and even shows her the gun prop to put her at ease. It's actually a sweet moment. And the actors' discussing the diner scene is fantastic in terms of some of the improv that took place. What the actors did on their own took a terrifying scene and made it even more horrific. The watchability of this film is right up there with Blade Runner, American History X, Django Unchained and Inglorious Bastards. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it and Eastern Promises.

The ONLY thing that really hurt this movie at times was the acting performance of Tom's son "Jack". It was poorly acted. The scenes where Jack is supposedly crying, yet despite the look of crying on his face, not one tear rolls from his eyes. This is almost a common occurrence in too many movies, and I seriously don't know how the directors miss such an important selling point of crying. It can almost be compared to someone laughing without smiling, or gesturing that they're laughing but no sound comes out. I didn't so much have a problem with the side story of Jack, Tom's son, but the acting was just SO bad, and it wasn't just the crying scenes, but his overall acting, or lack thereof. All of the other main actors were excellent. It might seem unfair to point out the bad acting by the actor playing Jack, but that's just how close this movie was to being a perfect 10 in my own opinion. Ironically, when Ed Harris' character says to Joey "You're trying to be this other guy, and it's painful to watch", that's exactly how I felt about the actor playing Jack.

The Road is another great movie. Adapted from a Cormac McCarthy novel.

Sarah, Jack, Edie are not safe because Joey is a great warrior, the family is only in danger because of Joey's "History of Violence". Viggo, as Tom/Joey, shares many similarities with Clint Eastwood as William Munny in "Unforgiven". Both, masterpieces with brilliant performances, deconstruct ideas of heroism. We learn both Joey and Munny were brutal, sadistic murderers. Both protagonists initially resist that they're irredeemably violent, yet after decades of acting like normal family men, once both decide to kill in a blink of an eye they're still cold-blooded killers. Joey and Munny are different than everyone else; they're not just better at killing, they're totally unmoved when killing, and none of the normal traits of dangerous men who must kill yet are still normal exist. Speak with any man who served in the military and they'll tell you how their hands would shake uncontrollably after engaging in deadly fights, or how they'd become violently ill, etc., yet both Joey and Munny show no emotion at all, all normal reactions are entirely absent because They Are Not Normal. Even the other brutal killers show anger and at times fear as well, but not Joey or Munny, they show nothing, they just kill. Both Tom/Joey and Munny spend a very long time pretending to be normal, so long both raised families, but they’re not normal. Both movies argue that "a hero" is not necessarily "the good guy", but rather the most coldblooded and violent person; that's the real reason that Tom/Joey and Munny are the only ones who survive. (If you want to watch a movie about a guy who is married, is raising a family, and seems like a regular guy (a littler bit of a loser actually) but is actually a retired government assassin who returns to a life of violence when his family is burglarized than watch Bob Odenkirk in "Nobody" which is a great movie. It is a great movie because it exploits the very classical ideas of heroism this movie deliberately subverts. However, a big part of what makes "Nobody" work so well is how rusty Odenkirk is when he starts to fight again.)
