Thanks for showing off our amazing country. I immigrated here from England in 1965 aged 22yrs old and have never looked back. Through hard work and having been given the opportunity to dream of a better life, I have now lived on the northern beaches for 45 plus years. It’s the harbour, not the river. When you go under the bridge and move further inland away from the coast, you travel along the Parramatta River, which ends in a weir at the City of Parramatta, the second oldest settlement in Australia.

I was in England earlier in the year. The fish and chips were terrible. The chips were so-so, but the fish was flavourless - cod - horrible. If you get the chance, get flathead fillets - delicious!

We went to Manly on the weekend. Just wish there was more shade as it's too hot in Summer. Try the ferry to Watson's Bay. Picnic at the park. A cliff walk and ice cream. The views will wow you. 😊😊

I think some of the nicest beaches in Sydney are in the national parks. They often require a hike to get to but are much more secluded and surrounded by bush and wildlife.

I live in Manly so I particularly enjoyed this episode. Manly has always been a tourist destination, in the 1920's the ferry company of the era promoted Manly as “Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care”. In the past it was people from country NSW enjoying an ocean holiday, now of course it's both day trippers and internationals tourists. I also scuba dive at Shelly Beach, it's a protected area for the sea life so the Eastern Blue Groper fish (they are a Wrasse species) love hanging out with the visitors.

the ferry you caught to Manly was the Fred Hollows. What an incredible doctor! He worked with remote & poor communities who were terribly affected with eye problems. He treated them, and the Fred Hollows Foundation was born. Please have a little explore on his work and legacy. An outstanding and compassionate Australian.

Get off at Milsons point station for Luna park (theme park) / lavender bay garden. Even can walk to balls head and do that loop via the back streets if you were fit. Used to run it occasionally during lunch 😅

St Patricks College was a priest accomadation .In fact when you walk down Bower lane all the land on the right hand side is owned by the catholic church and the house owners are on a 99year lease Glad you enjoyed Manly I live on the hill below the sunset as you were just leaving the wharf .We all take it for granted .So its good to see someone get excited

Loving your commentary and views of Sydney - where I was born and bred. It's nice to get an outsider's view of it. Another place to check out is the South Coast. Either drive down or take a cheap train to Kiama (main town) and Gerringong and Gerroa. Great fish and chips, huge pelicans, part fishing port, part beaches with great walks

You really need to go out to the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. There is a lot to do in different villages throughout the mountains as well as bushwalking on the tracks, you can catch the trains or drive, it's worth spending a few days & explore the area between Springwood and Mt Victoria. If your time is limited at least go to Katoomba & Leura.

Oh, Bluewater Cafe is such a good restaurant! Freshly shucked oysters with the sea breeze and a glass of bubbly or an ice-cold beer. Perfection. The food is great there. The Mexican place has an upstairs balcony area where you can have dinner overlooking the ocean too. Not as expensive as you'd expect as well.

Back in the day, waaay back, my grandmother used to catch the Manly Ferry during high seas. Usually a Southerly Buster will kick up the swell and the ferry would be diving and copping green water over the bow. She - loved - it. I would suggest my old stomping ground. Kurnell, Cronulla, Port Hacking and Royal National Park. Also, if you want to pat tame wildlife, Symbio Wildlife Park is a relatively small outfit, but very well run.

It’s so nice to see you enjoying your time in Sydney, we all enjoy watching as a family. As you enjoy walks I’d love to recommend the north side of the harbour walks from Kirribilli to Mosman to Clifton Gardens to Balmoral Beach to Manly (all a big part of the Bondi to Manly walk), particularly the section from Cremorne Point to Bradley’s Head (near Taronga Zoo) to Balmoral Beach. You can access these walks easily by ferry or bus. You will feel like you are in another world of peace but right on the harbour as well as having so many beautiful historic homes. The Boathouse at Balmoral is the best place for lunch. You are seated right over the water. In Manly you can get incredible fish and chips at the 16ft skiff club on the east side of Manly Cove and sit on their deck watching the ferries as you enjoy. If you are driving, Freshwater/Curl Curl coastline has great swimming baths and also Harbord Diggers Club where you can sit facing the ocean in their beer garden. Great spot that is also on a beautiful coastal walk up the northern beaches. The B-line bus (double decker yellow express bus) goes from Wynyard to the Northern Beaches. It stops at beautiful Collaroy Beach where there is a highly recommended pie shop on the main road - Upper Crust Pies. The northern beaches have my vote as the best! Palm Beach area is beautiful as it has ocean on one side and Pittwater on the other. From the Pittwater side you can also get a ferry to the beautiful Central Coast and Hawkesbury locations. Ps - when you go back to the Rocks check out the Hero Of Waterloo pub, one of the oldest and best. It’s on the west side of the Argyll Cut near the Garrison Church. You walked past the street that takes you there in the other video. Loving your adventures, Welcome to lovely Sydney!

Oh I just thought you’d also like to know while the big building on the hill at Manly is a College these days it used to be St Patrick’s Seminary. A very Irish place to be sure! We went there for a school excursion once and they have an exhibit of real Roman graffiti carved into stone from the earliest Christian days.

Catching the ferry to Watsons Bay for lunch at the pub and views of the heads is beautiful too. The beautiful college and all that land was owned by the Catholic Church and was where priests were trained $$$. If you get the opportunity a trip down the coast to Kiama/Gerrigong area makes for a great weekend.

You can see LOADS of fish at Shelly. Low key one of the best snorkelling spots in NSW. You get sting ray, fish, little sharks, turtles, and cuttlefish! It's stunning on a day with good visibility.

Shelly is awesome, I do the Shelly to Many Bold and Beautiful swim most mornings. What a great way to go to work with the smell of seawater in your hair. Shellys’s also a great place for a snorkel!

That turkey wasn't a real turkey, it was an Australian native bird called a "scrub turkey", "brush turkey" etc. They vaguely resemble turkeys, but aren't closely related to turkeys at all. Scrub turkeys have an unusual way of incubating their eggs, which is worth looking up and reading about. They used to be elusive and pretty uncommon back when we used to shoot and eat them, but they have flourished and become bold since they were protected. And they spread into the suburbs of cities when people started planting native plants and using mulch. You spread mulch around under your shrubs, then the wretched brush turkeys come along and scrape it all together to make incubation mounds.

You should check out the fish markets. You also have some great walks around the harbour. There are national parks to visit. North head where Manly is has a good spot to look around, they filmed Mission Impossible there with the stunts they did on the bikes back in 2000.

Those buildings you were asking about whilst waiting on the ferry at Circular Quay, that glass one you pointed at is where I used to work when I finished high school for a few years before leaving Syd. That's Quay Grand Suites and the open balcony is the ECQ Bar open to the public. That's a hotel but also private residence for super rich folk on the top floors and building next to it is an office block actually. Last time you were in Syd you guys walked right under it when you did the botanical gardens and Opera house walk :) I'm love this country, it truly IS one of the best and most diverse countries in the world both culturally and environmentally. You are going to LOVE your time here! I hope you get to travel all the states, they are all so different, especially Tassie. Work is plentiful too as you go along.

I often tell visitors to Sydney go on the ferry, it's like an economy harbour cruise. But I keep forgetting it's a commuter service that goes from point A to point B as fast as possible and literally has right of way over all other vessels on the harbour. Still worth it though.

A tip on the opal cards, use your debit card and it’s way cheaper I use it and the buses are 1$ no matter how far you go or where and cheaper for trains and ferries I’ve found

Manly is popular only due to quick easy access by ferry for the tourists and easy walks. Its a beautiful trip over by ferry. Highly recommended for anyone visiting wanting a glimpse of Sydney. Otherwise Manly is just an average ocean beach by Sydney standards....a bit crowded for most locals. For the overseas fishermen out there, those waters out to sea contain Black, Striped and Blue Marlin, Short Billed Spearfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Y/Fin and Bluefin Tuna, plus Mako/White/Tiger/Bull/Hammerhead/Blue/Bronze Whaler sharks. Sydney is also a fishermans paradise from the land for a feed. Its a beautiful city. U seem a lovely couple. Hope u enjoyed your stay.

Glad to enjoyed Manly on a perfect day. If you want more beautiful harbour views, I’d highly recommend you do the Taronga to Balmoral walk. Take a ferry from the Quay to Taronga Zoo Wharf, when you exit the wharf turn right and there’s a trail marked. It’s a fairly easy walk that hugs the Harbour foreshore. Remember to take your swimming cosies for a dip at Balmoral Beach where there’s a great fish and chip (burgers, etc) shop. To end your day, catch a bus back to Sydney CBD. I’ve done the walk many times and the views are spectacular! Enjoy the rest of your trip.

When you went to Shelley beach unfortunately the point wasnt working. On its day Fairy Bower ( which is the rocky point at Shelly beach) produces some of the best surf in Australia. There is also a fantastic bushwalk behind the beach that takes you all the way to North Head. The views of the northern beaches are incrdible.

Glen, sea water takes 6 months to “warm up”. It has nothing to do with the ambient weather. Other than more tropical climates in Queensland where it can be fairly consistent.

I was swimming in Shelly Beach once and huge school of fish came in. There must have been 5,000 fish. BTW, there are fairy penguins on the river beach next to the ferry terminal. And on the other side of the wharf, you often see a wide variety of fish. If you tell us where you're going next, we can give you tips. Have you checked out Watson's Bay? There's a ferry from Circular Quay on the weekend, I think. Walk along the shore around the whole of South Head. I was once on the ferry wharf there and a huge stingray swam underneath. Nice pub there too. The fish restaurant on the water's edge is great, but a bit expensive. BTW, the public transport is capped at $50 or $60 for the week, so if you use it a lot, it's cheap. Oh, and you've got to go to the blue mountains. Palm Beach is great too, but you need a car unless you are very patient with a long bus trip.

Ride ALL the Ferries ALL over the harbour and up the river, to the islands some of which you can stay on overnight. My favourite is the Mosman ferry. Trains to Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Gosford. They are a bargain and you will get to see spectacular scenery. All cheap as chips. Take the big Manly ferries at night and watch the seagulls flying next to you in the glow of the cabin lights. Catch the ferries back at dusk to Circular Quay and watch all the skyscreapers light up, and the Botanical Garden bats fly overhead to their roosts out west. If you can time the Manly ferry with moon rise between The Heads, check your calendar, it makes a spectacular photo.
