Please don't advise people to buy construction equipment from you. It's cool to see this test done, but there are certain standards osha requires and climbing gear doesn't have the same. Like the carabiner, it has to have a 2 point locking system, not like others. Yes the rope can be different to a point, and need to add the drop protection straps if not part of the rope. Yes climbing equipment does the same thing, but it's not the action being performed, it's osha standards. Trust me, you don't want that ticket or be watched by osha.

Honestly most (or atleast alot of) recreational climbing gear is rated high enough to meet the standard. But hasn't been ansi or asme approved so it's a no go. The biggest issue in work at heights isn't the gear being used. It's people not tying off or using the gear wrong. People rarely fall because the gear failed when used appropriately. It's people not tying off, using damaged gear (like in the video) or not understanding how the gear works. Whats the functional difference in a petzl ID and a grigri+? A bigger handle and sometimes the ID is rated for 2 people? Would I use a grigri at work? No, I'd get fired. But I trust it on Saturday. Why wouldn't I trust it on monday?

People are missing the point of this video, 12kn is definitely enough to hold you up, the problem is that the rope should be a lot stronger than that. Meaning if you keep using the rope under the same conditions the rope is constantly becoming weaker, one day it might potentially rapidly grow weaker under the right conditions, cuz that's just how materials work. Meaning it might just straight up fail. Safety equipment should be overkill, cuz even the best safety equipment fails, why would you be fine with using an unkempt weaker piece of equipment?

Its clearly time to replace the wron rope. But a more accurate response to this rope breaking would be. Yes, its old. But it still has a lot of life left in it. The nearly 3000 LBS of shock weight is more then enough for 1 person to climb on. If you have a smaller light platform. And the load is 1000LBS. Then youd want to be a bit more skeptical. The hook would likely outlive the persons work career with its massive load being held. Long story short, yes it should be replaced. But it was in no way a hazzard if used within reason.

Usually 22kN or so, for ANSI Technical uses like this. Some jobs might require around 40. Minimum rating will depend on many things. I don't know the actual regulations/recommendations so you should check them out, but the logic is more or less as follows: For a static load (just hanging out on the rope) take the suspended load (your weight+equipment) in kG and multiply by 10 for N (actually 9.8..., but 10 is easier). 100 kg (about 200lb) is 1000 N, or 1 kN Then add in reality and dynamic loads and things change. A small drop adds lots of force! But if the suspension is elastic, the force is spread out over time, so the max load is reduced. Knots, bends, going through hardware, all reduce the load a rope can take before breaking. Some knots will lower it to only 30% of max rating. So a 3kN rope can break at 1kN! Then add in a safety factor. 10 kN might be fine if nothing goes wrong? But safety standards likely require a higher rating, because if things go wrong, that might not be enough to save your life
