“They unilaterally took measures…” S Jaishankar on Nepal’s new currency note featuring Indian areas
Nepal govt’s move to incorporate a new political map on 100 rupee banknotes stirred a major diplomatic controversy. The revised map of Nepal claims Limpiyadhura, Lipulek, and Kalapani in the far-western region as part of its own territory. Reacting to it, India’s EAM S Jaishankar contested Nepal’s decision saying that Nepal is not going to change the reality on the ground. Earlier, in May 2020, Nepal’s updated map incorporating the territories was submitted to the Ministry of Land Management. Diplomatic ties between India-Nepal took a hit in 2020 after inauguration of a road linking Kailash Mansarovar via Lipulekh.

First of all Gurkhas are NOT from Nepal. They came from somewhere else. Buddha was not Gurkha. No significant ancient person from that part of India was Gurkha.

The term Gurkhas comes from Gorkha kingdom which unified and became Nepal. Gorkhali and Nepali became synonymous when this kingdom unified Nepal under Ruler Prithvi Narayan Shah who unified the Himalayan mountain and hill kingdoms to become Nepal. The Gurkhas were originally Kshatriya Rajputs but when British recruitment started after the Anglo-Nepalese war of 1814-1816, many high caste groups were unwilling to go to fight for Britain as they believed that would cause them to be impure. Thus, under Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana groups such as Gurung, Rai, Limbu and Thapa Magar (Thapa was a separate Kshatriya caste that did not fight for the British. The Magars took the surname Thapa as significance of their new roles as Gurkhas and Kshatriya)- Groups that had never been part of the Varna system and followed Buddhist or, Animist rituals were recruited as Gurkhas. There have been many historical figures from Nepal that have influenced ancient India i.e. Raja Janak, Mata Sita, Gautam Buddha that may not necessarily be Gorkhali as the kingdom of Gorkha did not exist then. In recent times, Indians of Nepali descent from Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Darjeeling regions use the term of Gorkhali to identify themselves from Nepalese from Nepal. One significant person from this recent grouping of Gorkhalis in India was Captain Ram Singh Thakuri who was the composer of the song Kadam Kadam Badaye Ja, the marching song of the Indian National Army and was appointed as Bandmaster of the INA by Netaji Bose himself. He also composed Subh Sukh Chain which was the national anthem of the Provisional Government of Free India established by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

@@shyamapple9060 The Gurkhas from India refer to themselves Bhartiya Gurkha. The Nepalese Gurkhas are just Guns for hire and Mercenaries. In fact they meet all the criteria of Mercenaries and had to be given an exemption by Geneva convention. They are now even in Russia's Wagner which is a Mercenary group. Although they meet many of the criteria of Article 47 of Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions regarding mercenaries, they are exempt under clauses 47(e) and (f), similar to the French Foreign Legion Raja Janak and Sita and Buddha were ancient Indians. Buddha himself was born to a Vedic Hindu family. Nepali language is an Indian language closest to Gujarati another Indian language. The Brigade of Gurkhas in the British army are now considered as regular British forces and are no longer viewed as mercenaries even by legal standards. India did not exist as an entity during the eras of Sita, Janak and Buddha thus, deeming them Bhartiyas in accordance with a South Asian identity is okay, but India refers to a geographic area administered by a particular government and is a new entity which does not include Pakistan, Bangladesh or even Terai of Nepal thus, deeming them Indians would be a great folly. Vedic Hindu Heritage was not limited to present-day India thus, Buddha despite being a descendant of a Vedic Hindu ruler would not be automatically deemed Indian, moreover so when the remnants of Buddha's clan the Shakyas are still practicing Hindus but are a constituent part of the Newar Culture of Kathmandu Valley. I am a Brahmin from my father's side and a Khas Kshatriya from my mother's who are a constituent Kshatriya group that comprises many groups from Pahadi region including Himachal and Uttarakhand.

The Maithili speaking population of Janakpur is fiercely loyal to Nepal and will support Nepal even against Bihar, whilst the Nepali speaking population of India is fiercely loyal to India even against their own Nepalese from Nepal. Language is not a factor for loyalties in this case and due to the political upheaval in Nepal and added rights for Madhesi people they are more likely to turn against India to safeguard their special privilege rights, than give them up simply because they have family in Indian state of Bihar.
