I've been listening to this song for 36 years and it still gets me everytime. This album Ride the Lightning came out when I was 14 at the time (1984) and this song come into my life at the best possible time. Suffering from depression, every single word in that song was every word I was feeling at the time and I was so close... The final solo is so inspirational, so uplifting that it is that one beacon of light in the darkness that shows this doesn't need to be the end. Please check out Dyers Eve from ...And Justice for All

I may be the weird one here...but i always interpreted this song as a love song. Now here me out here... "Life it seems will fade away...drifting further every day.." "I have lost the will to live...simply nothing more to give..." To me this is the loneliness and depression from losing a loved one...a significant other. Every day you just feel more and more lost without them...you have no more love to give.. "Things not what they used to be...missing one inside of me...deathly lost this cant be real...cannot stand this hell i feel....Emptiness is filling me...to the point of agony.." All say to me a lost love. Things arent like they were. Theres a "Missing one" . Being totally lost without them and wanting to just die to see them again. "Yesterday seems as though it never existed.." Again...looking back on a happier time with that person he lost. So yeah a song about depression...by why was he depressed? To me its because of that lost love. So yeah...Fade to Black to me is a love song.

Mental health issues are much better understood in 2020. Growing up in the US during the 80’s was different. It wasn’t cool to be depressed, let alone talk about it. A lot of people felt it was your own fault, as if you could will it away. For many metalheads, this song made them realize they weren’t the only ones struggling with those feelings. It was criticized for being pro-suicide, but we knew different. I’ve been catching up on your Metallica reactions. I love hearing someone with a trained ear give reactions to these guys (subscribed right away!). I like how you describe the images the music give you. They really are masterful at framing an emotional picture with the music. That’s kind of a feature of good metal. Much of pop and hip-hop are more focused on the lyrics and their delivery than the music. Not saying it’s bad - just different than metal. Cheers!

wow what he says at 9:04 is exactly how i feel this part of the song. All my closest friends, wife, family know this is the song I want for my funeral (hopefully in many many years more), and that exact part he's talking about is how I imagine when I'll be crossing to the other dimension, fading away. Beautiful.

This is one of my favourite songs of all time. The feeling I get from this cannot be explained... I like to think that after the first half, the person dealing with all this sees a glimpse of hope. But he thinks he has dug himself into such a deep hole he can't get out from it. Excellent reaction once again!! The way you internalize everything is so admirable. Thank you! Oh i forgot to mention about the intro. I think of it as a dream. Its really calm and easy on the ears. Then we get kicked into the "verse". Its faster than the intro, but a lot more hopeful. I think of it as like so much good in this life but the protagonist's mind cannot see them. Everything he thinks about is misery, where such lines as "i was me but now hes gone" come from

the longer we study them the more amazing they are. And finally it all makes sense: when we were young we simply liked Metallica and we were just headbanging at full volume. But today we understand, we see clearly that they - at such a young age - were already brilliant, their sounds very deep, their compositions amazing. And I think that is also why after decades, we still don't get bored listening to their songs.
@sonnybarry4 жыл бұрын
They did three albums that are almost conceptual. They don't tell a story from start to finish but they have a theme that is constant. You picked up on Master of Puppets being about things that control you. This is from Ride the Lightning where the theme of every song is about death in all it's many forms. The last themed album by them is And Justice For All which is all about injustice. Your analysis of these songs is particularly keen. You grasp the lyrics and see how they use the music to portray other aspects such as the calm middle section of Master representing the the high and the steady build back into an ever heavier and angry tempo representing coming off the high and the subsequent search for more drugs. Really like it! I look forward to more.

My wife has wrestled with depression for years, and I have been there the last twenty. It's a hydra-headed monster that strikes from your blindside. Since I know you love lyrics and how they can make you feel, I have a couple of songs for you to tack on to the end of your probably very long list. 'Snuff' and 'Not Long For This World' both by Slipknot. I thought I didn't like this band for years, and then I listened to them. They are masters of mood and atmosphere and lyrically they are phenomenal. Corey Taylor is one of the best songwriters I know of. Snuff is a ballad without screams, and Not Long for This World is another ballad, but there are some screams. Their screams are always used in very appropriate context and I think this song is the song will make it click with you (as you were trying to get your head around why the harsh vocals) and give you the understanding you were looking for! I don't like to give too many suggestions since I know you're probably drowning in songs to listen to by now! But these two I think will really touch you.

"Now He's gone" has 2 meanings. First: "He" is the guitar amp of James Hetfield wich was stolen while they were in denmark. They were all really depressed when they were in denmark due to missing home etc. and then the stolen amp (wich I believe James got from his mother) made the situation even worse for James in perticular, who was already struggling with suicide thoughts at the time. Second: "He" is the will to live.

This song is, in my opinion, the highlight of the album which preceded "Master of Puppets." I can't speak to your thoughts about a commonality of theme with the songs on "Puppets," but I do remember reading an interview with James Hetfield from the same time frame...he said that Metallica likes to write about topics which frighten them.

I loved this reaction. No, not all Metallica is like this. But alot of Metallica is. Especially on there 2nd 3rd and 4th albums. You should listen to the entire albums because Metallica plays with a depth, sweep and majesty that really most metal doesn't necessarily have. They were still very young when they made these albums. Metal wasn't just a style of music to them. It wasn't just a way to dress or a lifestyle. It was life to them. They existed to be, live and play metal. You will be able to tell this by listening to those albums.

@NorthernEar there are more metal bands treating about some tough subjects. Once you got hooked up in metal try some Disturbed ("Inside the fire", "Another way to die" or just simply "Asylum"). Metallica has gone through some dark days in their history and many of their songs say about this (that theft of their kit, Cliff Burton's death). I love the band - they were my door to metal music when I was a kid in late 80's and early 90'. For me personally - metal music has the punch to pass the message more clearly and with an accent on things that need to be accented. But that's me...

To add context they were in their early 20’s recording in the Netherlands. The needed to due a tour in England to the can have bologna on hand sandwiches. Tour falls through and they can’t even afford to make it back to the studio. They get a few bar gigs & when they get back to the studio all their equipment got stolen and they recorded using the same amp on borrowed guitars. They’re too heavy for radio & MTV for another 2 albums. Shows not even concerts was the only way to get fans. They were on an indy record co who couldn’t help with recording costs only distribution. We often forget the struggle they faced & how low it got. With this album and live show they earned a major label contract. Please react to Cliff’s solo Anesthesia Pulling Teeth live. Any & every rendition shows his unique mastery of the bass.

"Suicide?" Suicide. The band was just starting. Touring. Got all their equipment stolen while on tour. Literally back to square one or worse, financially. They couldn't continue the tour. Couldn't go on. And pulled on that thread until they pulled out this song. I've been to parts of where this songs lyrical I is. They hit the nail right on the head. It does feel like some parts of you just turn the lights of and leave, until what made you you is no longer there and you just continue to exist on autopilot. Not really there. Just going through the motions with no hopes, dreams, plans, aspirations, goals, or direction. No will or reason to even attempt to get better, while, to the outside world you seem to be fine(The one blessing of depression. You don't care either way, so you just do what they tell you you should be doing. Mechanically, like a wind up soldier.). Only you can decide to try to get better. And there we meet the catch 22. You don't choose to get better, because you no longer care, and you no longer care, because you don't choose to get better. I've been stuck there for a very long time. It was songs like this one and a few others that actually got me feeling something again. First rage and sadness, but with that dangerous area of negative emotions comes the salvation, if you live through it. Other feelings start to return. Anyway... Didn't mean to get so depressing. It's just where the song takes you. It actually reminds me of another song with brilliant lyrics, and I did promise you during the premiere of Pantera Cemetery Gates that I'd recommend some lyrics heavy songs. Would you mind a song from the Prog Rock/Metal genre? You'd probably need to have the lyrics open somewhere, as the one I have in mind has sections where there are two lines of lyrics coinciding(two points of view at the same time).
@ThomasJ_Music4 жыл бұрын

The band is Pain of Salvation. The song is Rope Ends. Bit of a warning. It is HEAVY. Deals with a DARK topic. But does so beautifully and respectfully. It actually helped me explain a few things to a few people in my life, where my own words couldn't do it. Daniel Gildenlow, the vocalist and author of most of their lyrics, is a genius in my opinion. Both in the way he paints a picture with words and in the vocal control and emotion delivery in his tone. I'd recommend the version from Remedy Lane Re:visited (Re:mixed & Re:lived) album. It's a remaster of the original Remedy Lane concept album. A much clearer and crisper sound. And again... If you decide to do it... Have the lyrics open. Trust me. You'll need them to follow the second half and appreciate the imagery used.

It might be a while off though cos I’ve only just done the Pearl Jam and TotD this week. One by Metallica I’ve already heard - what a song, but because i already know it, I can’t do a reaction to it! I’ve not heard of Gojira, but I will check them out, especially if they’re local!

@@ThomasJ_Music I know oldham well, used to have pals from failsworth. , well the day that never comes, is a great metallica song that gets over looked by reviewers. Gojira, are not local though, they are french, and used to open for metallica a few years ago, but are way too good for that. they are brilliant, quite heavy at times, but very atmospheric very cool, contemporary. and flippin incredible live . absolutely must be on your list.. And maybe one of the best live bands ive ever seen, and they must be on the list and thats rammstein. my friend don't worry, you will be a full blown metal head by the time your finished, its hard to deny incredible music, when you have a open mind, it will just grown on you more and more.. it did to my wife, and now she loves trivium..lol Im looking forwards to your next reaction for sure.. take it easy.

You have done a great job with your reactions to Metallica. I have had those CDs in my collection from the time they were released. You pick up on things immediately that I never even noticed. If you are looking for another metal band that tells a good story both lyrically and musically I suggest Iron Maiden. Songs like "Hallowed be thy name", "Run to the hills" Wasted Years" and if you have a lot of time "Rime of the ancient mariner" There are plenty more that I could list but these are some of my favorites. Anyway keep up the great work!

whats interesting about musicians like james hetfield is that they provoke you intellectually. they tell you a story for eg this song, lyrically never alludes to any form of solution or a way out yet through music they push you into a corner where you begin to believe there is one. its just amazing and so is your channel.

I agree about his music. I’m developing a real appreciation for Metallica. They’re incredible. Thanks for the kind words too!

Ok metallica brought me here and now I'm down the rabbit hole lol. You got yourself a sub. So since its a metallica song I'm gonna suggest ORION by them. Then I wanna see if you could do the band Tool. My personal favorite is H by Tool and I recomend either have the lyrics up for them because the lead singer is a genius when it comes to lyrics. Hope to see soon. Thanks

Fade to Black was on the Ride the Lightning album. It's too difficult for me to properly listen to these days, but it's a beautiful song. I always loved it. I don't listen to Metallica very often anymore. But these reactions are reminding me why I fell in love with them in the first place. ❤️ The only album I can say I really don't like is St Anger and it's unholy snare. When you get to those songs, you'll either love them, or you'll hate them. It's a very dividing album.

@Jacques Malan Not to mention there isn't a single solo. Not even a tiny one.
@loud60374 жыл бұрын
@Jacques Malan Yes! They should never have made that album really. I think if they'd waited until the band was in a better place mentally, we would have had another great album. The fans would have waited. Look at Tool - 13 years between albums and nobody gave up hope. And Cirith Ungol just released their first in 29 years, and their fans have stuck around all that time.

@Jacques Malan Love APC just as much! And I have been listening to Puscifer more recently as well. They're a bit weird, but they do have some great songs too. How did you feel about Fear Innoculum though? Took me a couple of listens to start getting into it.

@Jacques Malan Those are my favourite two as well lol. I have heard of Sons of Apollo, but haven't heard any of their songs yet. But I will go and do that, because you can't beat a good supergroup 🤩

Yeah, you're feeling it! Nice react. Let's try something a little bit more extreme (harsh vocals, but still melodic) and see if you dig it: Children Of Bodom - Bodom After Midnight. Cheers and keep it up! 🤘

I kinda like to take it as if he was indecisive about doing the act. The last "good bye" was the a reaction to finally approach the edge, to stop thinking about it and just do it. My mind is always left not knowing if it was done though because the solo basically keeps going. So maybe... in the end he did not commit suicide.

The protagonist did follow through, hence the fading out in the song.

Meanwhile I'm called a weirdo by Hip Hop Fans for listening to "old music" made by people who are now in their 50s. It's so god damn sad that its "embarrassing" for them how they feel and express the music live (guitar faces etc.) How and why did we get there?
@gianwinters4 жыл бұрын
Nebtor i dont recall any hiphop music lasting that long is there?
@Nebtor4 жыл бұрын
@@gianwinters yeah of course hip hop artists have a shorter "life span" i think it's not good that nowadays the visuals for a song (artist, music video etc.) are more important to many fans than the music itself. Besides the most of the music is something i could produce easily and I . You dont necessarily need talent or a lot of practice to fascinate people. (sorry for my bad english)

1. Im one of them, so I can condlfirm what you say, Erwin. 2. Guys... I recommend Dan Bull and songs like I Hurt Myself or Civilization Rap or A Portrait of the Autist, before you dis the entire genre of rap. Or many of Boyinabands songs like Spectrum or Empty. There are gems. Not everyone is a mumbler. And there are stars that still make meaningful, deeply emotional songs after 30 years in the game. Okay. Rant over. Keep an open mind.
