Ork _ oz thanks for the great comment! I now think the slow part of the song is the drug itself. Either side of it the drug is talking to him, enticing him. That bit is the only time in the song the drug is silent and it’s purely because the user has given and taken the drug! Loved it!

@@ThomasJ_Music To me, the slow part is the calm after getting the fix. As you said in explanation 2. Then the part after (Master, master, where's the dreams that I've been after?) is the hangover, the moment every addict experiences where they feel the drug hasn't delivered what it promised ("You promised only lies") and they feel like a loser and a joke ("Laughter, laughter..."). But then the song picks up tempo again, as the addict feels the only way to deal with the misery of that hangover is to get fixed by the drug again ("FIX ME!"). And finally accepts that this perpetual circle of anxiety and misery is their live now ("Hell is worth all that, natural habitat...").

@@ThomasJ_Music yes - the bridge was the effects of the therapeutic effect of the drug. Then the build up and anger from it wearing off and feigning again - the user screams "FIX ME" and we go into the solos as the song tempo picks up again.

Master of Puppets is about drug addict in general but was inspired by a heroin addict. Heroin can also be chopped on a mirror and snorted. The first past of the song is from the perspective of the drug. The first solo is the high that you get from heroin and other opioids. It's lethargic and ethereal. The second part of the song after the solo is in the perspective of the addict. leading into the second solo that is manic and all over the place, that is after the high and the addict rushes looking his next fix. the final part of the song is the drug again and it has total control...

Your understanding of music and listening with your educated ears, it’s fun seeing you react to music and artists that as a viewer is a fan of and you experienced it for the first time makes you very watchable. Metallica has tons of music that have meaningful content and musically they are so good. You’ll see that their music vary from slow melodic to hard thrash music and have both lyrical and instrumental pieces that make them so complex. My 2 recommendations are. “One” the official video even tho I’ll get blasted and the 2nd is “Fade To Black”. From there it’s just a matter of what timeline albums you want explore. Keep going. Your reactions are the best ive seen. Your education in music and keen sense of hearing stands out with your synopsis of each song. I have a reaction song suggestion. Megadeth has a instrumental titled."Absolution." It was released as a demo track on a remastered version of the album titled, "Youthanasia." Its a 3:36 second instrumental that packs the punch of Metallica's 8/9 mins instrumentals. Its the only metal Instra. that can hang with Metallica's catalog. Absolution is deserving of your reaction and vise versa.

I have such great respect for their composition ability, musicality, and Hetfield's lyrics. This was their third major album after Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, and it's good to realize they were still practically kids when they wrote these songs. It was groundbreaking when it was released, and has stood the test of time, especially their earlier recordings. I'll never forget seeing this album cover in a music store in the mall in 1986 - that's how we bought music back then :) - thinking it looked cool so bought it on a whim...omg, changed my life. After years of loving British metal and other hard rock, it was time to level up.

Heard this since I was a teen in the 80s. To me the beginning is the craving of the drug. The laid back tone next is the bliss from having it. The solo is the manic portion and starting to come down. Then the craving returns at the end. The final laughter is it knowing it owns you over everything.

The entire album is amazing. Great enough that it is the first metal album inducted into the US Library of Congress. You nailed the song. "Is there a time signature change there?" Time signature change in a Metallica song? Well.... hehehe. There are so many numbers splattered across the tabs for 'Blackened' you could think it was exotic maths homework. Again as with your Orion response, I appreciate your responses to this live Creeping Death in 1989 in Seattle. You said you were trying to picture what it must have been like to be at this show. Well, my very first concert when I was 16 years old, I got to see Metallica on this very tour, in Springfield, Illinois! Watching this particular live version definitely brought me back to what it felt like to be experiencing all that, particularly the strong emotional connection with the boys in Metallica. I do recall Jason Newstead adding in backing vocals, which was really new to Metallica at this point. But by far, that chant of DIE in Creeping Death...the connection during the show with the band... I can only say, over 3 decades later, watching this again brought it back to me as if I was there again in that moment! I could even remember my seating location (on Jason's side of the stage). Thanks for your initial reaction and sharing this with us, the long time Metallica fans! We know how special this band is and their contributions to music in general, but more importantly, to each one of us individually!

Good to hear! Yeah, I think it’s more likely to be the relief of the fix tbh. The beginning of the song is the drug calling to him, enticing him. After the musical break, I noticed it was the user speaking to the drug, saying things like ‘where’s the dreams that I’ve been after’ and as the song builds up again, the lyrics shift back to the drug calling him again. The musical break is the only time the drug and the user are silent. One is high and the other doesn’t need to do any more enticing. Glad you enjoyed it, I’ll defo be doing some more in the next week or so

I have been listening to Metallica for 25+ years and it wasn't until I started watching reactions like these that I really started to catch those little nuances in Metallica's songs. You can definitely hit all of Metallica's well known hits, but I would highly recommend you branch out and hit many of their excellent but less-reacted-to songs. Here are some examples: Fight Fire with Fire (Ride the Lightning) Orion (Master of Puppets) Eye of the Beholder (And Justice for All) Through the Never (Black Album) Outlaw Torn (Load) Devil's Dance (Reload) Merciful Fate (Garage Inc) No Leaf clover (Symphony and Metallica) Frantic (St. Anger) Unforgiven III (Death Magnetic) Atlas Rise (Hardwired to Self Destruct) Keep it up!

@@ThomasJ_Music Well, if you ever decide to give this series of videos another go, give hardcore punk a try. If you consider it, I reccomend you give the song "Right Brigade" by the Bad Brains (1982) a chance. Even though the Bad Brains were a punk band, they were quite musically adept. Not only that, they also took a lot of inspiration from reggae and soul music, and many of the interludes they had on albums, or played live, were based in these other genres. Definitely something worth checking out!

I'm surprised you know a lot of things! I really enjoyed your reaction! Trust me coming from an Arab person, from an old hardcore hiphop listener, metal is not a noise at all, especially Metallica. They really know how to create good music, FROM RIFFS to LYRICS to EPICNESS. You should listen later to Megadeth Black Sabbath and these type of bands that changed the heavy metal game. Sorry for my bad English, subbed.

Metal-head I generally don't comment, but I really enjoyed your reaction and interpretation of the song. I'd love to hear your reactions and or analysis of other songs. Both under the umbrella of metal, and maybe some older prog songs, maybe some porcupine tree, or king crimson, nine-inch nails, unleash the archers, Allegeon, Devin Townsend. I especially liked the way you analyzed how the structure of the song lent to overarching theme. I'd love to see you critically examine some other absolute classics.

What's really creepy is at the end the Master mocks the addict by echoing the high's warm, inviting and spaced-out tones, like in the middle of the song, reminiscent of the high the drug addict had, and then, like something out of Dracula or something where the true face of evil is revealed, those feel-good spacey tones are abruptly cut off up by the brutal descending sliding power chords and the terrifying evil laughter of the Master of Puppets remains.

You don't have it wrong friend. After all, music is subjective. There is no right or wrong. Considering this was the first time you heard it, your take was very thoughtful. You certainly looked deeper into it then I did the first time I heard this song. Metallica is my all time favorite. I have heard this song more times then I can count. But I love hearing others react to Metallica. I would recommend you do a reaction to the first song on this album. It's called Battery. Would love to get your take on it.

Gotta take my hat off to you! Very few reactors to this song catch the "craving, euphoria and back to craving" that the tempo and music go through. Now go give "One" a listen. You won't regret it. Liked and subbed. Keep at it!

Vader's Rage thank you very much for saying that, it means a lot! Unfortunately, I can’t react to ‘One’, as it’s a song I know and have heard many times before, so the reaction wouldn’t be genuine I’m afraid. However, other than One, Master of Puppets and the opening few lines of ‘Nothing Else Matters’, I haven’t heard any other Metallica, so there’s plenty more reactions to come!

@@ThomasJ_Music Gotcha! Wouldn't be an authentic reaction. Once you've gone down the Metallica rabbit hole a ways, give a listen to the Seatle '89 and the Moscow '91 videos (even if you've reacted to the studio versions of the songs). Their stage presence and energy is UNREAL! Keep 'em coming.

Great reaction, and really good analysis of the song. I'd love to see more metal reactions - I think you'd be surprised at how broad a genre metal actually is, and how deep a rabbit hole it is once you fall into it. I would recommend Opeth 'Ghost Of Perdition' Katatonia 'Old Heart Falls' Gojira 'The Gift of Guilt' (the live at Brixton academy vid is great) and Ne Obliviscaris 'Forget Not' or 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' (both these songs were chosen to be studied as a lesson in composition by the Sydney Conservatorium, which is cool) Any of those to give you some idea of the scope of what is being done with the genre today. Oh, and definitely subscribed!

Yes. Everything you said about how to interpret the lyrics I have understood to be true for over 20 years. It means all of those things. The only acception being I've never heard the pretty part as a comedown. I've always heard that part as the relief in feeding the addiction...to me, it's the part of the song when the addict has his temporary relief from the anguish of chasing his next high. It's not just cocaine; it's also about heroine. And it intentionally has beats dropped from measures. Not odd meter, per se...but beats dropped in order to rush the tune along like cocaine does...coke speeds along like a runaway train. It doesn't care about waiting for the natural "one beat", it drops beats and hits the "one beat" early. And that perpetuation of fast paced cocaine musically sits nicely against the melodic serenity of heroine. But they both lead to a quick comedown which leaves the addict frustrated and wanting to feel the next thing.
