@El_Peto There are probably more high mileage Harley-Davidson's that any other brand. If you have an actual source for that statement other than "trust me bro" I would be interested to see it. And, your feelings don't count as a source. No market share in which market and compared to what?
@SoloPilot68 ай бұрын
@@joshbass7460 Check the ads for used Harleys. Note the mileage. Or lack of same.
@SoloPilot68 ай бұрын
@El_Peto HD's problem is that they painted themselves into a corner back in the 1970s. Instead of bragging about their motorcycles, the ad campaigns were playing up the "outlaw" image to potential buyers. As a result, when they tried to develop new bikes, they didn't sell because they didn't go with the image that their buyers had of themselves. At the same time, the average age of HD owners was going up. Most younger riders want more modern bikes. This means that the dental hygenists and bookkeepers who bought them a couple of decades ago are aging out of riding (or breathing), and the kids and grandkids who inherit the Harleys aren't interested. They put them on the market, and discover that they are only worth a fraction of the price of a new one, so they cut the prices to get rid of the damn things. Ironically, the people who DO want one know that today's HD is pretty much the 1972 HD, so they save $20K buying one at an estate sale. This means that they AREN'T buying new ones, which is why HD is feeling the pinch.

Typically they'll turn away older bikes because Harley-Davidson requires the dealerships to charge around $250/hr labor. I had a 30 year old Dyna Low Rider and the dealer mechanic said he could work on it, but he didn't want to charge me out the ass cuz corporate calls them "vintage" and heavily marks up labor for it.

As having a 20 yr old HD, it really depends on the dealer for service. It's recommended against because most dealers have young techs who can't do them. But you can find ones with older techs who knows twin cams are still twin cams. Also there's more than plenty of local mom & pop shops who will work on the old bikes all the time, and likely be someone like the Bearded Mechanic. I personally feel like ride what ya want. But unless it has warranty, I don't see a need to take it to dealerships for how expensive they are, lol

Just a thought, if you have a chance, try a Honda ST1300. Nothing against the HD, just sharing an experience. It is a sport touring bike and it is a little on the heavy side, a little over 700 lbs wet, not including luggage. However, after seeing you handle big motorcycles, I don't think that is going to be an issue for you. Adjustable seat to three positions, so it can be lowered for shorter riders. It is comfortable in long rides and if it has the factory top box, plenty of storage. 7.7 gal tank that can give you ranges of over 300 miles before having to refuel. I took mine from Knoxville to Key West with my wife, camping and we were able to fit our luggage for two for a week, camping gear, tent, cots, cooking gear, matress, chairs, blankets, etc. and everything fit in the side bags and top box. of course, we shopped wisely, looking for gear that could pack very small. I had a tank bag and that was it. no extra back packs or anything like that. She handles like a dream, you can check tons of videos and reviews on that. I bought mine in 08 and still looks new and after all these years still turn heads :-) May not have the latest electronics but I did upgrades that I thought were very important which makes her more comfortable, like cruise control, most have for long trips, and heated grips for cold days. You can get caught in a down pour and as long as you can keep a constant speed of over 65 mph, you will not get wet at all. Excelent bike even today!

Enjoying your content, I purchased my 2018 FLHTK, I financed it from a wholesale dealer in New Hampshire. Not a horrible experience, but not one without its challenges. This would be a good episode to try to shoot. They don't allow you to test ride the bikes, as they do all the test drives themselves. It really does challenge the senses and your maintenance knowledge (This is not for the faint of heart!) I've had to replace both my tires after getting a good report on the tires that came with the bike (tested for depth not cupping or other defects). when you let go of the handlebars the bike went into a wobble (another expensive neck bearing repair) and the normal full 10K service. The paperwork was a nightmare and seemed more like a hurried checklist... my bike has the M8 motor and the dealers tech sheet stated it changed both spark plugs... well if you know you know, the M8 has 4 plugs. All said and done, I put an extra 2K into my new bike which sold at $16,999.00 for decent deal and an otherwise decent bike. But buyer beware and know how to go. If you want to PM me I'll share the well know dealership name.

I live in Florida and it is my stress relief vehicle. Grab a cigar, get on the road, ride along A1A when I can. As far as a Police model, I did see some new ones for sale at a Harley dealer years ago. I bought it because it had 6.800 miles only, came with the 114 Police motor, RDRS, fan assisted oil cooler and heated grips. The price was way below a comparable Street Glide. Added led lights all around and low laying license plate mount. TAB performance 2-1-2 headers with 4.5" mufflers and DK Custom transformer with hi flow air cleaner and FP4 for stage 1. Now I dropped in a Soundstream head unit with Hertz speakers from Volunteer Audio for 1.5k. had to de-police the bike to make all thumb controls work but aside from that, the bike is perfect and I saved a big chunk of money . Based on my experience I can only recommend to go this route as it saves you a lot of money and you get a bike that rides awesome.

He had to have them, so he could pick it up, if he dropped it. He fixed-up all three and kept the best one for himself. The two he sold, paid for his personal bike. I remember our local shop in Ventura, CA was run by the Hells Angels. Their clubhouse was right nextdoor. That was my favorite era, when everyone rode custom choppers. Back before H.D. Corp, made it what it's flaming and foreign-made butt is now. They always forget the very people that kept the dream alive for them. Prosperity brought an end to the Mom & Pop shops, of the past... My first bike was a used 2016 Harley Sportster Forty Eight XL1200X. I loved that bike and getting used, I felt less bad about the occasional ding you get as a new rider. After converting it into a minibagger for a while, I traded it in for a new (at the time) 2019 Sport Glide and I LOVE her (her name is Danvers after Captain Marvel because she's a badass woman). I'm at 48k and plan to take her to Alaska in June. Eventually I plan to get a used dual sport or adventure bike for more offroad, likely not a Harley, but I can recommend getting a used Harley. :-) Here we have multiple reputable shops that will work on older Harleys (I have brothers who ride early 2000s Harleys).

The thing about Harley Davidson is the absolute ability to break them down and put them back together again there engines are designed to disassemble and rebuild as necessary there simple designed is liken that of a tractor or heavy machinery if you will.. Because of the simplicity tank like toughness, it's at the heart of every biker to own one, the sound the power the nostalgia I've had three and I've still got my 72 iron head it's chopped but still a lot of memories go with them take care Doodles remember ride like no one else had any eye balls ✌️🫶

I bought one of the older Kawasaki KZ1000P Police Bikes at a San Jose, California Highway Patrol auction years ago. Loved the bike. The KZ1000P cop bikes were the best ones the police ever used. Later on they went to Harley's due to a "buy American" campaign by most police departments.

I noticed that in the ad that you were referring to comparing prices the lower priced model is a Switchback. This is a different beast than the other FL models as it is actually a Dyna that has an FL style fork, floorboards and quick detach bags and windshield. It is close to 100lbs lighter than the police model you have. Harley only made it for a few years. It might be something worth checking out.

riding a '93 FJ1200 here, approx 5 years at a time it's super reliable then the bike breaks down, you do a huge amount of (simple) maintenance and you're good for another 5 years. probably the same for old harleys, I mean the motor is kinda overkill and there is not much that can fail on those non-computer-bikes :D

My first HD was a 2005 Road King Police that I bought in 2010 with 34K miles on it. It had 125K miles on it when I got my E-Glide in 2015. The only work other than routine maintenance was to change the cams to gear drive at about 55K miles.

I have a 2009 FLHTP and love it! I acquired it from a friend who couldn’t ride any more. I bought to just bounce around town as my backup to an k1600 ga. Previous Harley’s 2009 1200xr and 2019 street glide… this bike is without question the best Harley I’ve ever owned or ridden!! I typically put around 100-200 miles a week on it.

I remember watching that video on Bikes and Beards with the "Bolice" and "Sherf" motorcycles, it was pretty funny. 😆

Interesting video. For comparison: I just picked up my 40 year old BMW R100RT from the dealership. Parts and service no different today than 40 years ago. BMW boxer engined bikes have been used for decades as police bikes in Europe. BMW was the first bike to have a factory installed fully dressed bike (i.e. upper and lower fairing) for excellent wind protection AND aerodynamics. They run smoothly. They do not leak fluids. They have large hard panniers. They weight hundreds of pounds less than the H-Ds. So what is not to like about German iron? Please Doddle, I realize you love the Harleys but after all these years I think you should check out long distance and other riding on a boxer motored RT street Beamer. 🇨🇦

I have a 2013 tri glide ultra and a 2006 road king classic, love them both. I had a 2016 ultra limited but at my age it was too much to handle especially with my wife on the back. When we are together we take the trike when I ride alone i take the road king.

That's one big bike 😊. I've gotta say my Tigers stock seat seems fine and isn't uncomfortable. You sure looked comfortable doing those tight turns. I'm not sure I'd fancy doing them.

I've bought two used harley's. an 03 heritage,,,, traded it in on a 08 Street glide. I miss the heritage and in hind sight should have kept it for my wife to ride and got the street glide straight out..

The only Harley I owned was a 1969 police special. I bought it for $800 I even came with the lights and siren. I rebuilt the engine myself and it ran great for a Harley until someone not paying attention ran it over completely. Also in my state you can have the lights on a vintage vehicle but you can’t turn them on or have police badges on it or have the siren( mine had it) Mine was plain white and I did turn the lights on at bike shows only.

My friend put the police seat on his ultra limited. He does slow skills a lot and it does help push you forward to the tank. When we go on long trips he says the seat is comfortable but I tease him and ask why does it need an extra air bladder on the seat. I call it the whoopy cushion
